'«cult 1 .V . Principals Message 1 fiVrSZ v 'vV '' - . «• • , ' V ... •' k - ' v. •' • •.- « ■ 't The Principal's Message is traditionally directed toward the graduating class. This year I would make my few remarks to those students who have not yet reached the rank of Senior. In this year's graduating class, as in all which have gone before, there are regrets expressed at not having made the most of the opportunities afforded in the high school program. These regrets come from Seniors who are only now realizing that a successful future is directly linked with the accomplishment, or lack of it, in high school. I refer specifically to those who now wish to continue in college and find that they have avoided courses required for college entrance or who have failed to put forth their best efforts in these courses, those who have sought an easy program. There is no easy way to success. Education is a process of learning and benefiting from the experiences of those who have traveled the road before. To those who still are trav- eling that road to graduation, take heed and be guided well, lest you too find yourself wanting when you reach that goal. Board of Trustees Office MRS. Elected to lead us on our ex- ploration into higher learning were Gene Bartolomei, President; Arlene Vieira, Vice President; Joan Bcncdix, Secretary; and Marvin Crews, Treasurer. Keeping up our school spirit was Elvera Fiori Eisenga as Yell Leader. Our brave advisors were Mr. Ferdinansen and Mr. Cole- man. On September 8, 1953, we again found our way back to good ol’ Eski Hi, ready to continue our adventure. We were braver, but still lowerclassmen. Our class officers were Gene Karr, President; John Largent, Vice- President; Barbara Williams Karr, Secretary; Phil Machado, Treasurer; and Darlene Ellis and Gene Bar- tolomei were our Yell Leaders. Braving it again as advisor was Ferdie, and a new advisor for us, Mr. Wciscr. On September 7, 1954, we again returned to Eski Hi, just as faithful as the Swallows to Capistrano. We had at last become upperclassmen. This year the girls upheld their constitutional rights by electing Shirley Laugero, President; Arlene Vieira, Vice President; Joan Benedix, Secretary; Karen Cohagan, Treasurer; The boys getting in their say by electing Calvin Cardoza and Phil Machado, Yell Leaders. Our advisors were Miss Toy, Miss Clough, and Mr. Carlyon. During our Junior year we were commended on the good job we did in raising money through various sales—as one faculty member put it— Give it to the Juniors and they will sell it.” We also presented the play You Can't Take It With You,” directed by Mr. Muller. With our money we gave a Prom and Banquet. September 12, 1955, we at last became honored Sen- iors at Escalon Union High School. Our leaders were Bob Shugart, President; Gary Sanders, Vice President; Calvin Cardoza, Secretary; Barbara Rehmkc, Treasurer; and Marlyn Schramm and Marvin Crews, Yell Leaders. Our advisors were Mrs. Saylor, Mr. Lincoln and Mr. Skiles. We presented another successful play, Double- Barrelled Detective Story, directed by Mr. Muller. We were represented in C.S.F. by Joan Benedix, Karen Cohagan, Virginia Dcrickson, Carol Engel, Shir- ley Laugero, Toni Malspina, Kay Mortenson, Mary Pol- hemus, Charlotte Selby, Lynn Skiles, Frances Smith, Arlen Vieira, Lois Vilen, and Bob Shugart. Outstanding in the athletic department were: Chuck Ennis, Marvin Crews, Gene Bartolomei, Bill Gonzales, Calvin Cardoza, John Largent, Gary Sanders, Eddie Nunes. Although we are all anxious to start our life’s occupa- tions, we are reluctant to leave Escalon High and the many friends we have made during the past four years. Officers G. President CHARLES ENNIS Sports Resume Football This year the Escalon Cougars won 5 games, lost 2, and tied 1. The Cougars opened the season by losing a practice game to Galt 7-25. Livingston was next and we beat them 7-6. Then Escalon met defeat by Sonora to a score of 0-27. After this the Cougars did not again taste defeat, but won or tied the last five games. Calaveras and St. Mary's were next on the list, and they came out on the short end by losing to the Cougars 21-20 and 13-6. Next were the three most important games of the season. The League Games. First was Hughson whom we mauled 25-6. Los Banos came next and we tied them 20-20. Patter- son was to be the tough one, and so on Armistice Day we proved tougher than they, and beat them 25-9 which gave us the CHAMPIONSHIP. Much credit should be given to Mr. Engel and Mr. Ort for producing a Champion Team.” We didn’t have a field of our own to practice on, or have home games, so therefore our team played all the games away and a lot of credit goes to the players and coaches for this reason. Our B” team won Co-championship with Los Banos. With very few returning veterans, and a lot of inexperienced players we proved that inexperienced players can win a Championship. Thus the A and B Football Teams ended their season in a sparkling blaze of glory. Basketball The Escalon team got off to a very slow start by losing to Hilmar, and two games to Livingston. But the mighty Cougars came back beating Ripon by a score of 53-48. Next we trounced Denair and Hughson 54-23 and 54-48. We lost a heart breaker to Linden by 2 points. Our next league games were exciting and close, but we walloped Ripon 61-54, then the Cougars were defeated by Oakdale, Linden, and Newman. The Cougars dropped Denair 46-28 and then in our last game we fell to Hughson. The regular starters were: Gary Sanders, Chuck Ennis, Delbert Kalback, Wendell Eliason, and A1 Farinclli. Gary Sanders broke his collar bone during one of the practice sessions which was quite a loss to the squad. Delbert Kalback was high-point man. The B’s had a very good season winning 8 and losing 9. The regular starters were: Art Lial, Jack McDowell, A. C. Colburn, Larry Clark, and Alan Blackmore. The two highest scorers were Jack McDowell and Art Lial, w'ho set a new league record with 41 points in the Ripon game. Swimming This year's swimming schedule will include dual meets with Brentwood, Manteca, and the Modesto Reserves plus a three way meet with Patterson and Newman. The league meet to be held at Los Banos will conclude the season. Returning veterans and those most likely to carry the load for the Cougars this year include: Class A”: Gene Karr, Chuck Ennis, Don Wendland, and Wendell Eliason. Class B : Glen Dahl, David Marino, Steve Abernathy, and Pete Augusto. Prospects look fairly good. However as far as the league meet is concerned the defending champions, Newman High, is definitely the favorite again this year. Baseball This year there were quite a few fellows who went out for baseball. But with a few eliminations it looks like this club will be very strong and may place in the top three of the league. Returning veterans were: Bill Gonzales, Pitcher; John Largent, Catcher; Del Kalback, First Base; Art Lial, Second Base; Calvin Cardoza, Shortstop; Marvin Crews, Third Base; and Jack McDowell, Left Field. Track With quite a few veterans returning the track team should do pretty good this year. The A” and B” divisions seem to be the strongest divisions of the three but the C cannot be underestimated because there are a lot of first year members on it. The team opened the season by placing first in all three divisions over Linden and Galt. c o a c h e s COACH LINCOLN Basketball COACH BEEMAN Football. Baseball Basketball Managers R. McDonald, J.
