The Cougars were a fem- permenfal squad, in som'e games scoring as high as 36 poinfs and in anofher playing a 0-0 fie. AII in all, fhe boy' did a fine iob and came ouf beffer fhan expecfed. The Cougars frampled Newman 33-0 in 'rhe firsf game, buf affer a valienf fry, were furned back by Oakdale, I9-I2. In fhe Hughson game fhe Cougars were vicforious by a score of 36-6 buf Iosf fhe services of Lonnie Mafhis as his leg was broken. In fhe Ripon game fhe Indians nearly scalpedi fhe sleepy Cougars and Escalon was forced fo come from behind fo win by I9-I2. Againsf Gusfine fhe defense had a field day and we came off vicfors by I8-7. The high poinf of fhe season was fhe fhrilling game af Los Banos where Esca- Ion won I8-I3. The mosf specfacular play of fhe sea- son came off in fhis game when Pefe Fisher snafched a Marfin pass in our end zone and wenf IOI yards for fhe fouchdown fhaf provided fhe margin we needed fo win. Nexf fhe Linden Lions rose up and held our mighfy Cougars fo a 0-0 fie. Affer fhaf game, we were mauled by an alerf, aggressive Pafferson sq'uad who beaf us I2-7. Finally, we were able fo vanquish I'he Hilmar Yellow Jackefs by ZI-0 and we fhen wound up fhe season, fied wifh Los Banos for fhe Champion- ship of fhe Joaquin League. The B squad also gained a co-championship wifh Los Banos and Pafferson. The Cubs ran up an amazing score of I05 poinfs fo fheir opponenfs 7. The only T. D. scored on fhe Cubs was marked up in fheir Iasf game againsl' Pafferson. While Escalon had fwo fouch- downs called back, PaH'erson's score sfuck and for fhe firsf and Iasf fime fhaf year fhe Cubs fasfed defeaf. BASKETBALL This year Escalon High furned ouf one of ifs besf squads ever in fhe varsify baskefball feam. The boys hung up a very respecfful I5-4 record againsf some fop-flighf compefifion. The Cougars dropped Gusfine, Oakdale, Downey, and Denair in a row and fhen were defeafed by fhe Tracy feam, Champs of fhe Valley Oak League. In Escalon's firsf game againsf fhe Hugh- son Huskies, fhe Cougars were as cold as fhe currenf frosf and fell fo defeaf by fhirfy poinfs difference. They fhen sysfemafically walloped Oakdale, Hilmar, Ripon, and Linden. Againsf fhe Lodi Flames fhe Cou- gars had a fouch of homesickness and were defeafed. From fhere on ouf fhe 'Cougars rolled all fhe way fo fhe championship, wifh fhe excepfion of Tracy, al- fhough Tracy only won by fhree poinfs. The Cougars ended play in fhe norfhern division by swamping Lin- den 96-60. Escalon wound up fhe season and fook home fheir championship by edging Los Banos 59-58. Thus fhe I952-53 Escalon varsify baskefball feam end- ed a sparkling season in a blaze of glory. The B squad had a very successful season and iusf missed fhe championship in fheir division. The fi'I'Ie was won by Hughson in a pasf season play-off. The B feam beaf every feam in fhe league play excepf Hugh- son and also defeafed several larger schools during fhe season. All in all, fhe B's had a very fine season and fhey should have fhe applause of fhe enfire sfu- denf body for fheir efforfs fhis year. BASEBALL The Escalon Cougar Baseball feam' has sfarfed fhe season on fhe wrong foof. They were defeafed by Hilmar 7-3, Oakdale I3-9, Ceres 6-2, and Ripon 6-0. The feam had a Iafe sfarf in pracfice. Since many of fhe baseball feam were on our baskefball squad, fhey have had a severe handicap. As fhe season advances, fhe boys should round info a well coordinafed feam and win fheir share of ball games. Coach Ferdinand- sen has a large number of boys refurning from Iasf year's squad. TRACK This year fhe Cougar frack feam is sef fo show fheir heels fo fhe resf of fhe league. The Cougars frounced Hilmar in a dual meef by a score of 204-96. In our nexf meef wifh Los Banos and Calaveras we Iosf by a mere nine poinfs. The feam is a' well rounded group of boys who should be able fo place well in any compefifion. SWIMMING Coach Engel, fhis year Iosf only one member of Iasf year's large and able squad.-Lasf year, due fo a mix-up in scheduling for fhe League Meef, Escalon arrived an hour Iafe and consequenfly we were complefely ouf of fhe running.
