How often we, who are older, look at the present generation of young people and remark on the facilities and opportuni- ties which you now have. Each year members of the graduation class come back to say, We never had things as nice as this. Last year our pool was built: this year new classrooms were added. Next summer new dressing rooms and show- ers will be provided for the gymnasium and the swimming pool, facilities which you, who are members of the Class of l95O, will miss, but which future students will enjoy to the utmost. Such is the price of progress. Your children will have more and better oppor- tunities than you, and their children in turn. Be thankful that your opportunities are as good as they are and strive to make future opportunities better for those who follow you. In such progress is true happiness. TRUSTEES' LEFT TO RIGHT: Ralph Eliason, l-'red Barber. Freeman Reid, George von Gluhn. Wllber Morrill. Harold Whitlock. The year ot l949-1950 has been a very busy year tor our capable trustees. The new classrooms were completed and are now in use. The auditorium was reseated and now accommodates more people much more comfortably. The Wood Shop was reroofed and a 54-passenger bus was purchased. The board is now working on plans tor shower and locker rooms tor both the boys and girls, which are to be built on the west side ot the gymnasium. They are also considering the purchase ot 20 acres ot land adjoining our present school property. We, the students ot Escalon Union High School, wish to thank you for your time and effort to make our school a better school. Members of the present Board of Trustees are: Mr. Wilbur G. Four years ago 85 scared and green freshmen entered the threshold of higher learning, that of Escalon Union High School. As freshmen we were led by joe Lial, and in our sophomore year Tony Pin- heiro acted as president: as juniors Marvin johnson wielded the gavel. This year Tony Pinheiro again had the honor of being elected president, with Bob Garcia as vice-president, Almeda Molles, secretary and Angelo Blanco, treasurer. During our junior year we presented a play, Take Your Medicine, under the direction of Mrs. Bartells and Mr. Lutz. We also honored the senior class by putting on the junior-Senior Banquet and junior-Senior Prom. In our fourth and last year at Escalon High, the senior play, Believe lt Or Not, was presented by the senior class. We also had lots of fun on our ditch day, snow party, and being honored at the junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. We were represented on the C.S.l:'. by Myron johnson, june Iorgensen, Ioyce Reichert, Bonnie Thcmpson, Pat Skiles, lean Faulong, Marian Ballance and Claire Fowler. The senior class also has done its part in producing outstanding athletes such as Angelo Blanco, Fred Coop, Tommy Rampoldi, Otto Peterson, David Derickson, Marvin johnson, Iohnnie Kee, johnny Carvalho and Tony Pinherio. During our senior year Mr. Lutz and Mrs. Fee were wonderful as our advisors. Looking back over our four years at Escalon High, we shall always have a fond place in our hearts for the friends we have made and the memorable times we all enjoyed. To some of us these four years have gone by much too fast! ALTAMIRANO. The Student Body finished a very progressive year under the able hand of our president, Marvin Iohnson, assisted by Bonnie Knepp, Vice-president, lune Jorgensen, secretary, David Marshall, treasurer, and Hugh Barton, assembly manager. Though the assemblies were few and far between, those that we did have were enjoyed by all. Most of the assemblies were presented by the different clubs of the school. Our school dances proved to be quite successful this year with the assistance of our popular school dance band. Noon dancing also proved to be something new with the addition of the juke box, lunch tables and the snack bar in the girls' gymnasium. Last but not least, we must not forget our vivacious yell leaders, Margaret Ann Carvalho and Wyvonee Butler, who did a swell iob of filling our students with pep. I. Rsicharl. STUDENT CCUNCIL The Student Council of the Associated Student Body of Escalon Union High School had a fruitful year under the able guidance of President Marvin Iohnson. The student council was very active this year, serving as operators of the snack bar. We purchased for the snack bar a juke box, refrigerator, popcorn machine and coke machine. Despite the fact that we bought all of this equipment, the snack bar showed a good margin of profit. Hugh Barton acted as general manager of the enterprise, with students Working under him. The student council acted as host to the Section lU, California Association of Student Councils winter conference in Ianuary. It was agreed by everyone that it was the best conference we had ever had. We also were highly honored by being asked to hold a discussion group at the C.A.S.C. convention in Santa Barbara, and were very instrumental in having our school become renowned in this organization. The Future Farmers of America have completed another successful year of educational and recreational activities. The chapter's motto, Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Learning to Live, Living to Serve, has been instrumental in the accomplishments of the high goals set by the members. In statewide activities, Escalon won state champion fat lamb and state cham- pionship in sheep showmanship. A member of Escalon's dairy judging team placed second in Holsteins and third in Guernseys at the state finals. A member of the Escalon chapter won the sectional public speaking contest and competed in the regional finals. Some of the outstanding trips taken by the chapter were the achievement trip to Catalina island, the trip to Carnp Lillard, the state final judging contest at Cal Poly, field day at Fresno, picnic day at Davis, field day at Lodi and a trip to Cali- fornia Polytechnic College for Poly Royal. For community improvement throughout the year the Escalon chapter planted 87 trees in the new park and constructed picnic tables for use there. Sand tables were constructed for the new grammar school. The boys also built several new pieces of athletic equipment for the high school. The Block E bought films for the taking of motion pictures of our football games and showed them to the student body. The admission was ten cents which more than paid for the films. We also had booths for selling pop at the home games and this too showed a good profit. Out of these proceeds we bought the Bee basketball team new jerseys. March 3 we sponsored a dance after the Hilmar basketball game and April 22 We sponsored a magician whose show was held in the high school audi- torium and was thoroughly enjoyed. New members voted into the Block E after football season were: David Derickson, Clarence Uthe, Frank Sherman and Frank Fiori. Stars were awarded to Ronald Knepp and Gerald Prater. During football season the Girls' League made pompons and sold them. Another Way of making money was by having cake sales. With the G.A.A. we sponsored the first school dance. Since the dance was during the football season, each class sponsored a candidate to run for football queen. They were: Margaret Tocco, freshman: Lois Garcia, sophomore, Miriam johnson, juniorp Claire Fowler, senior. The senior candidate, Claire Fowler, was elected queen. A Girls' League Convention was held in Lindsay, November 5, l949. Two girls represening Escalon were Almeda Molles and Margaret Carvalho. Miss Repetto chaperoned the girls, with Mr. Whitlock as chauffeur. April l5 and l6 a Girls' Leadership Conference at the Old Hearst Ranch in Pleasanton was represented by Margaret Carvalho and Mary Middleton. This year instead of having the annual Mother-Daughter Tea, we sponsored a banquet at which our mothers were our guests. This banquet was well attended and enjoyed by everyone attending. We wish to thank Miss Repetto and Mrs. Azevedo for all the efforts they made to make this year so enjoyable. C. S. F. This year the C.S.F., Chapter ZZOC, had a new advisor, Miss Vivian Manha. The officers of the club for the fall semester were the majority of the members. They were as follows: Sammy Firch, presidentp Gene von Glahn, vice-president: Pauline Blixt, secretaryg Ierry Barton, treasurerp Peggy Tomlinson, pin custodian. During that semester the club had a scavanger hunt and invited the Spanish Club, Copa de Ora, to participate. Last year the point system was revised and the subjects were put into two lists, the Academic and the Skill. The student has to make 6 points or 2 A's in the academic list, and the other required 4 points in the skills list. This made it harder to become a C.S.F. member, but that made no difference because the group expanded until there were 30 members. The president was Patsy Skiles, the vice-president Myron Iohnson, the secretary Ierry Barton, the treasurer Iean Faulong, the pin custodian Michael Iohnson and the student council representa- tive Norbert Hackett. . The organization put on an assembly and a few of the members attended the district meetings which were held in Manteca, Livingston, and a swimming party at Ripon. TOP ROW, left to right: I. Dugo, M. MIXED CHORUS This year for the first time the Glee Club met as a mixed group and the mem- bers received full academic credit for the course. The musical progress of the group steadily improved as the year Went on and by May our Glee Club could hold its own with any in Central California. Not many public performances were given, but those that were made a deep impression on the audiences, especially the rendition of the Lord's Prayer and The Lost Chord. Chenille emblems designating membership in Glee were received by stu- dents receiving a B grade or over for a semester. Mr. Lutz, as usual, wore out his voice, hair and patience trying to make our Glee Club a success, and this year his efforts were not in vain. TREBLE CLEF The Treble Clef, composed of Iuniors and Seniors in their third year of instrumental music, had little to do the first part of the year. ORCHESTRA This year the Orchestra has shown considerable improvement, mainly due to the addition of more stringed instruments. We now have eight violinists and three cellists in the string section, which makes the group sound more like a true orchestra than our old instrumental choir. As usual the Orchestra added materially to the success of such school func- tions as the play, baccalaureate and graduation, and each performance received many favorable comments. It is unfortunate that the Orchestra isn't heard by more Escalon people be- cause it is the most polished of our musical groups and Well Worth hearing. Maybe next year will bring more opportunities for our excellent orchestral music to be heard and appreciated by more people. BAND Under the capable direction of Mr. Lutz, the band was very successful in all it did this year. It started off with football season and marched at all the home games and at the ones away as well. The performance which the band put on Armistice day was very much welcomed by the people of the town. Later in the year the band shows were presented in other schools, and for the Escalon public for the purpose of raising funds for new uniforms. All band mem- bers worked very diligently to make the show a financial success. The band also helped very materially to make the F.F.A. fair a success. The organization is growing very fast in size as well as musical aptitude, and is fast becoming one of the best units in the valley. TOP ROW, left to right: M. Kerner, G. Sharp. H. Pope, P. JUNIOR RED CROSS The Iunior Red Cross has been very progressive this year under the manage- ment of Myron Iohnson, president, and his assisting officers, Claire Fowler, vice- presidentg Mary Middleton, secretaryp H. Krebs, treasurer, Pat Skiles, reporter. Two enrollment drives were held in November and in the spring. The first drive brought the school a 100 per cent enrollment. The second drive was to collect the dues for the year. A benefit dance was given at Christmas and the proceeds went to buy gifts. Enough money was made to buy 27 nice Christmas gifts and some candy. A cake sale was also held which was very profitable. We owe a lot to Miss Manha, our advisor, who helped us make this year a success. FORENSIC CLUB The Forensic Club, which is composed of students of Escalon High School who have taken public speaking and are exceptionally interested in speech and debating, has just completed a good year. Those who served as officers were: Ioyce Reichert, president, Claire Fowler, vice-president: Hugh Barton, secretary, Leonard Eliason, treasurer. An assembly, a cake sale and a dance were among the activities recorded during the year. Debating teams composed of loyce Reichert and Myron lohnson and Hugh Barton and David Marshall represented Escalon High throughout the year in debates held at San Francisco, Oakland, Modesto, Stockton, Ripon and Merced. During the Oakland tournament Hugh Barton was honored by receiving a certificate for outstanding extemporaneous speaking. Hugh also Won the Lions' club speech contest and represented Escalon at Tracy, also winning' there. The efforts put forth by Miss Iulliette Repetto, as advisor, were greatly appre- ciated by the group. 'gf' TOP ROW, lah to right: I. Faulonq, G. Von Glahn, I. Silva, E. Iohnson, M. All Physical Ed classes and different sports teams did wonderful work, and this all came from the careful planning of our coaches, Mrs. Azevedo, Coach Engel, and Coach Ferdinand- sen, and the cooperation of the students of E.U.H.S. This year something new was added by the Girls' P.E. Classes. The Tumbling Exhibition and Basketball game proved to be a great success, and we know everyone enjoyed the Exhibition. This year our Faculty-Senior Boys Basketball Game was held at night with the public invited, with all proceeds going to the March of Dimes. Patrolman Skiles and his bunch of Convicts trampled all over the poor defenseless Seniors. Basketball games were also held during noon hour this year, adding a great deal to lunch periods. Both the boys and girls participated in this, and each day a different team played. The Senior Girls plays the Women Faculty mem- bers in one of these games and really beat the teachers. Some of the sports that the girls, as well as the boys, enjoyed were basketball, baseball, speedball, volleyball, track, and last, but far from least, swimming. Our thanks goes to Mrs. Azevedo, Coach Engel and Coach Ferdie for all that they have done for us, making this past year at E.U.H.S. a really successful one. - .1 .........,1., TOP ROW, left to right: H. F. SHERMAN C. UTHE A. BLANCO L. RAMPOLDI T. RAMPOLDI FOOTBALL The Escalon High Cougars had a Bang up season winning 7 and losing two. Our first two games were practice games, losing the first to Newman 6-7, although we cutgained, outplayed and outpassed them. In the second practice game we won easily from Bret Harte 21-6. League play, for us was opened with our most respected rivals, the Ripon Indians. Ripon arrived that cold, windy afternoon 30 point favorites. After a definitely onesided Escalcn first quarter, the Indians recovered a Cougar fum- ble on our l5 and went all the way for a TD. The score at half time, 6-0 Ripon! After an even-seven third quarter, the Cougars took the ball on their own 40 and capitalized on the line power to march all the way to the Ripon 7-there with fourth and seven, Gerald Prater threw a beautiful pass to never miss Fred Coop. The same combination was successful for the conversion, and we won 7-6. Our second league game was a onesided affair in Gustine which we won 20-14. The third, the game of the year, and the battle for championship, was a heartbreaking defeat handed us by the Los Banos Tigers 41-6. The next league game of the season, the Patterson Tigers gave us the most exciting, wild wide- open game of the season. Before a jammed stadium in Patterson we were able to win 21-I9 with the Tigers on our 6 as the final gun sounded. Injured Harold Pope had won the game kicking the conversion without an error. The final game of the season was a wonderful one to most loyal fans as the Cougars broke the tremendous Hughson linx 26-0. Fred Coop led his teammates to a 46-6 trouncing over his former teammates, the Hilmar Yellow-jackets. He also received the out- standing players' award, and all in all everyone agreed it was the most success- ful season in ten years. Coaches Engle and Ferdinandsen brought the team a long way this year, and they have the admiration and gratitude of everyone in our school for making Escalon a football power. M JOHNSON D. GIRL'S SPORTS Sports started this year with softball and wet hair which accompanied swimming. When the rains finally came, the girls fled inside to play volleyball, with the first period winning the championship. After volleyball came basketball season in which the sixth period players were the victors in the playoffs. Tumbling was an extra-special sport and all the classes worked very hard trying to avoid bruises while planning a show. Mrs. Azevedo, a full house, plus the labors of the girls made the exhibition an outstanding success. The sixth period class again came through with top honors. Yet to come were speedball, tennis, badminton, soccer, more softball and swimming. In all classes, teams were chosen from the outstanding players of that sport. The championship team was determined by a process of elimination between classes. The girls found PE. very effective this year, and we feel that we were truly blessed with our new teacher, Mrs. Clara Azevedo.
