Thank you for everything. In Appre Dr. Norwood E. CANNADY To Erwin High School Seniors, 1966-1967: In my short tenure at Erwin High, I have been impressed by many things - one of the most notable of these has been this year's senior class. Your seriousness of purpose, your warmth, friendliness, and cooperation are high among the reasons for my being so happy here. I am grateful to this class for these things and I extend to you best wishes for con- tinued success. We have tried to provide experiences here that would cause you to accept the responsi- bilities and privileges of democratic living. We trust you have become proud and self-reli- ant and that you will continue to work cooperatively with others in the community who are attempting to make Erwin and our nation a better place. We want you to take pride in per- sonal accomplishments, but more than this, we hope you will always keep things in their proper perspective - to understand the relative value of spiritual and material things. What you do after graduation will determine whether your school and home have been successful. We know you do not yet know what you will become, but I challenge you to plan always to be of service. You not only have a responsibility to yourselves and your families, but also to society. What you do and how you conduct yourselves will determine whether you are fulfilling this responsibility. I am confident that the members of this class will meet their responsibilities. Best wishes for health and happiness and many years of service. Robert W. The love and faith they have invested in our lives have carried us through these past twelve years. Now as we begin to accept our new roles as mature graduates, we realize that our parents are responsible for what we have become. Our reactions to them and our deepest feelings about them shape our personality, and in this way our parents have become an inseparable part of us. Through the years they have shared our laughter, tears, hopes and disappointments. And now we share a portion of our Senior year with them as we dedicate this page of the 1967 HOURGLASS to our parents with our deepest love and appreciation. Mr. and Mrs. N. O. Autry Mr. and Mrs. L. Being anxious to take our place among the high society, we elected the following class officers: President, Bill Bennett; Vice President, Dwight West; Secretary, Lynn Bethune; Treasurer, Bruce Gomedella; and Sergeant-at-arms, Billy Harrington. Our class was well represented on the athletic teams. Many other students joined the various clubs. We were proud to have Lynn Bethune crowned Homecoming Queen during our Freshman year. We were also proud to have Tag Wade, George Coleman, Michael Strickland, Michael Walters, Bruce Gomedella, Bing Sizemore, Richard Crawford, Dwight West, and Si Harrington tapped into the Key Club. As Sophomores we were more confident, ready, and willing to make this year a success. We began by electing the following officers: President, Tag Wade; Vice-President, Billy Harrington; Secretary, Cindy Ralph; Treasurer, Kathy Ray; and Sergeant-at-arms, Dwight West. Again this year our class was well represented on the athletic teams. Several of our members were tapped into the Beta Club: Brenda Barefoot, Lynn Bethune, Cathy Byrd, Si Harrington, Janet House, Elaine McLamb, Edith Lockamy, Michael Strickland, Tag Wade and Hope Thornton. The high light of the year came when Kathy Ray was crowned Key Club Queen. Finally we were Juniors. Wanting to long remember this year, we elected the following class officers: President, Danny Grady; Vice-President, Bill Bennett; Secretary, Janet House; Treasurer, Harry Wade; and Sergeant-at-arms, Dallas Blackmon. We were really looking forward to publishing the HI-LITE and planning the Prom. We chose ‘Tag Wade, Elaine McLamb, and Cathy Byrd editors of the HI-LITE. We were very proud to have Mrs. Sarah Hudson, Mr. Jimmy Johnson, and Miss Linda Lassiter as sponsors. Several members of our class served as officers of the various clubs. We were well represented at Homecoming with the following girls: Cathy Byrd, Jeanette Horne, Sondra Beasley, and Hope Thornton. As the year came to a close, we chose as co- editors of the HOURGLASS Joyce Turnage and Cathy Byrd. Finally, weare Seniors. Long have we awaited this title. We all felt that this was our most important year and we wanted it to be a success. We began by electing the following as our class officers: President, Dallas Blackmon; Vice-President, Richard Crawford; Secretary, Janet House; Treasurer, Lynn Bethune; and Sergeant- Other Senior girls on the Homecoming Court were Brenda Barefoot, Elaine McLamb, Rae Odom, and Lynn Bethune. Si Harrington was chosen Morehead Nominee from Erwin High School. Also, Cathy Byrd was chosen torepresent E. H. S. asanominee for the award given by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Boy! were we happy the morning our class rings arrived. We considered them our most prized possessions. Then came the magazine sale; followed by the Senior Class Halloween party. Everyone really had a wonderful time. These memories and many, many more; we, the Class of 1967 leave to each of you. Witnessed by 5 Hope Thornton Kathy Ray, Textatrix Michael Walters 85 PROPHECY Time Ue aia L oes Place: The Laboratory of Erwin Institute of Technology As Ienter the laboratory with its strange machines and many workers busily running back and forth, I notice some familiar faces. The man working at the end of the counter is Bing Sizemore, prominent chemist and inventor. His three assistants, Dale Holt, Ruth Horne, and Janet House seem to be extra busy today. Those girls operating the IBM computers are Joyce Turnage, Edith Lockamy, and Elaine McLamb. The Institute's two electronic experts are Mike Walters and Randy House. The accountants who work here, Larry Hobson and Richard Crawford, told my lawyer, Danny Jakeman, that atime machine had been invented. The architects who designed this building, Harry Wade, Glenn Pope, and Linwood Jernigan, head communications man here, could all confirm this story. They had seen the machine. As I wander around, I see a school tour being conducted. I wonder who the teachers leading the group are? The three men in the lead are Tag Wade, Dwight West, and Dallas Blackmon. Their female counter- parts are Vicky Carlisle, Cathy Byrd, and Brenda Barefoot. They make a nice addition to any faculty. I understand they are all very popular at E.H.S. Erwin's coaches, Bruce Gomedella, Billy Harrington, and Wayne Royal are enjoying the tour as much as the students. By the way, I hear they have undefeated teams this year. Keep up the good work fellows. TWO HOURS LATER Well I finally talked Professor Sizemore into a demonstration of his time machine. I doubt if it will work though. As we get in, he pushes a button--a whirring sound comes from every direction, lights! flash! puff! Everythingisdark. The Professor explains that we are going forward in time. Both of us hope to see what our classmates from old E. H. S. will be doing in the years to come. It's getting light again .. . We seem to be viewing a forest ranger's station. Those rangers over there look familiar--why, it's Joey Denning, Mike Strickland, Dan Grady, and a veterinarian friend of theirs, George Coleman. They are apparently enjoying themselves as much as they said they would. Near the park is the best garage in town. Its owners, Larry Faircloth, Jerry Faircloth, and Ricky West are all good mechanics. As we charge into the future, we see two hospital X-Ray technicians at work on Sondra Beasley, a famous beautician, The two technicians, Lynn Bethune and Jacona Jackson, make good X-Ray specialists; oh, to have a broken arm. Well, back to business. Those nurses at the main desk look like Ann Hall, Margaret Faircloth, and Valarie Barbour. They always did like to help people. Our next stop is a Military Base at which a young pilot, Barry Horne, and his flight engineer, Marine sergeant Billy Frazier approach a waiting airplane. Among those watching the preparations for take-off are two sharp looking soldiers, Randy Byrd and Donald Lucas. I hope the service is good to them. The next place our time machine deposits us is at a large chain grocery store. The sign outside reads, International Foods, Inc., Willie Avery, Manager.'' As we enter the spacious store, we can pick out many familiar faces, Some of the bargain hunting shoppers are Linda Wade, Brenda Whittington, Jackie Byrd, Jo Ann Morrison, and Jannie Mae Norris, all of whom are married and have wonderful families. Those ladies at the check-out counter are Elizabeth Stone, Sherry Shermer, and Patsy Ryals The girls behind the check- out counter are Linda Eason, Barbara Ennis and Bonnie Autry. They surely are efficient workers. Another stop is made at the hotel operated by Ronald Tart. The Business Executi f America are having their annual convention here this week, Frank Dennis, Donald Jones, and Ray Parker are three of the well to do businessmen attending. The secretaries who accompanied-their bosses are Janice Brown, Ann Lucas, Linda McDonald, and Ann McLean. Geneva McNeill is busy checking in the delegates. Not all the representatives are menthough. Kathy Ray and Rae Odom, prominent advertising agents, are here also. Linda Pope and Cindy Ralph are happily married and still find time to be prosperous business women. As we make our way back to the future, suddenly there is a flash of light, a loud pop! ...and we are home. Two scientists who work at the institute, Rondey Giles and Donald Turner, approach the machine with optimism. Well, did it work? they ask. | It surely did,''I reply. 'We saw just about everybody and they all were happy.’ We say our goodbyes and I leave for home. On my way there, I decide to stop for a bite of lunch at the Candlelight Room, owned by Mickey Phillips. His reputation for fine food is well known in this area. From where I am seated, I notice Hope Thornton and Wanda Stephens having lunch together. They too, have done well in life and are very happily married. ie eT Now, as I sit gazing out the window, memories of Erwin High and my former classmates drift into my thoughts. A feeling of satisfaction comes over me as I realize that my wishes for happiness and success were found by all of my classmates. Si Harrington, III.
