When our time of departure arrives, we hope to leave be- hind us much of ourselves. We trust that our trials and achievements, as well as our attempts and defeats, will be engraved on the history of our Alma Mater with our sweat, tears, and smiles. | Time tolls heavily on our hands until suddenly we real- ize that soon the tangible will become intangible... the good times will become memories, and many ties will be broken. Formmany, this is the lastw.. : ... Of really belonging. New faces will begin to thrive under the steady hands of our teachers. Soon that which was so much ours will fade away with time  and distance... .. Realizing, however, that the most tangible evidence of our presence within these halls is this, the 1965 HOURGLA Ss; we have endeavored to enclose within its covers the high- lights of our high school career. We offer these events as memories for our classmates and also as promises that what we have obtained through our experiences here will serve us well, With great pleasure and immense pride, the Senior Class presents the 1965 HOURGLASS - -a MEMORY and a PROMISE, ti. | per 1 Skin : a0 Wey i E - , f : - e he = lines } f os E Âą J p t i bev’ ‘ - 2 : .  : ; Vy iN Qa Cer ee ee ye. tae a0 ws, OF MRS, EDNA M, PARKER ‘SĂ©niors!f ?’ . . Pere _FLYLAT 2S Now that youare about ready tobe graduated from high school, you. are valmost ready to take your first solo flight into the unpredictable future. As your flight instructor, it is my job to pass on a few pointers before your take-off. The flight ahead may or may not be an easy one. Perhaps you may have rough air to navigate, perhaps a fewforced landings, but whatever lies ahead, your trip will be more smooth if you will navigate by these instruments. First, the Compass of Courage. You must have courage to take a tough job and do it well, courage to set your standards high, courage tolive by those stand- ards no matter what the rest of the crowd say or do, and courage to set a good example. Anyone can drift, but it takes real courage to stick up for what you know in your heart is right. Check your compass often. Second, the Automatic Pilot--Patience. Without this instrument you cannot fly a straight and level course. You must have patience to see things through to completion, If everything you have worked for seems to fail, patience will help you to:pick up the pieces; and try again and again Until me OUmsUCce Ome mOnIy) failure is in no longer trying. There is a right time and place for everything. Have patience to wait for the opportunities God gives us all. Third, the Altimeter of Faith. With this instrument you can soar to any height. You must have faith in yourself, first of all, to believe that you can handle your- selfin any challenge life hands you. This is half the battle. Have faith in the future, in your church, and in your family and friends. Help them to have faith in you too. There will be times when even these instruments seem to fail. It is then that you must radio to Head Control Tower Operator for directions. Trust Him. He will keep you on the beam no matter how rough the weather becomes. Now it’s time to turn the controls over to you. I wish you a smooth, swift flight and happy landings. Your friend and principal, bell EF Dr. Norwood E. Jones MR. GLENN T. You will continue our antics and you will take up our pursuit for -the answer to success here. You will fill our seats, ask our questions, take our tests (thank you!), - and receive our honors. While you are part of the future without us at Erwin High School, you are also very much a part of our past. Possibly more so here than at a larger school, our realm of friends includes students from all classes. For this reason, you will be more prominent in our thoughts than events will. You have shared our good times and our tears. You know our near escapes, ourdesires, and our fears. Memories are now the only means by whichwe can relive these important occasions. We have made many friends and have learned much, with each friend and each lesson leading us to brighter experiences. One circumstance, and one alone, has remained in- variable, This is the never ceasing love, devotion, and guidance of you, our par- ents and guardians, Nothing we attempted was too small or unimportant to escape your attention or be beyond your concern. No honor did we win that your joy and pride did not equal our own. No defeat did we suffer that your sympathy and con- ime noe in our ability was not more than sufficient to compensate us for our ef- orts, At this time, the Senior Class of 1965 wishes to express by the dedication of this page in the HOURGLASS, our deep felt gratitude for the love which brought us here and advanced us to this moment in our lives. Wilson Ghe Years Ghat Were In 1951, a group of excited and frightened children entered Erwin School to begin their formal education. Some clung desperately to their mothers’ skirts while others were just happy to be grown up enough to be going to school at last. The days of not being able to go from our classroom to the swings without getting lost were soon forgotten as the years quickly went by. Before we knew what was really happening, the years as elementary students were over and we entered high school as nervous, lost, and excited as we had been when we had first cometo school nine years before. Eager to take our place, we elected the following class officers: President, Fraley Bost; Vice-President, A..F. Lee; Secretary, Ann Coleman; and Treasurer, Wayne Matthews. Class spon- sors were Mr, -fommy Davis; Mrs. Davids Popes Mrs mt mite hnOteas mance ie John Pecora. Our class was well represented on the athletic teams during the freshman year. Other students became members of various clubs and organi- zations oncampus.Severalofour boys were tapped into the Key Club and Lauren W. Campbell was a Varsity Cheerleader. Tommi Wes won the E.R. Thomas A- ward at the end of the year for the highest average in high school. We began our sophomore year with more confidence and less confusion by electing the following class officers: President, Danny Sawyer; Vice-President, lames Jernigan; Secretary, Janet, Bowers, SiteacsumereRayeJackwsonmiatteem members of the class were awarded for their outstanding work by being tapped into the Beta Club. Mary Ennis was chosen Varsity Sweetheart and other mem- bers were elected officers of various organizations. Our capable advisors were Mrs. N°. Jones, Mrs. Dorothy Lambert, Mr. AH. Dunning sand MareW a! lame Corbett. Tommi West, Charlotte Crawford, Jennifer Godwin, Debbie Hall, Lauren Campbell, ConniSurles, Jatana Wilson, Kenny Godwin, Danny Sawyer, A.F. Lee, Coy Blackmon, and Dan Bryant served as waiters and waitresses at the Junior- Senior Prom. Charlotte Crawford and Jatana Wilson joined Lauren Campbell as Varsity Cheerleaders. Many awards were presented at the end of the year to members of the class for their outstanding work during the year. Tommi West won the E.R. Thomas Award, Mathematics Award, and the Biology Award. Judy Horne won the Home Economics Award for Proficiency and the Public Speaking Award. Allofa sudden one of the most important years of our school career had ar- rived. We immediately began to make our junior year one to be remembered. Danny Sawyer and Robert West were elected Co-Editors of theHI-LITE. Tommi West was elected secretary of the Student Council; Danny Sawyer, vice-president; and James Jernigan, sergeant-at-arms. Our advisors for the VearewenesMiss Judy Jackson, Mr. Tommy Davis, Mr. C.L. Eaddy, and Mrs. Sarah Hudson. Of- ficers for the year were President, Ricky Manning; Vice-President, Kenneth Godwin; Secretary, Tommi West; and Treasurer, Dan Bryant. Sue Phillips and Debbie Hall were cheerleaders. The spring of our junior year will always hold many memories for this was the time for our class play ‘‘ omes Charlie”’ in which Sandra Byrd and Donnie Weeks played the leading roles. On May 8, the gymnasium was transformed into a lovely Japanese garden in accord with our theme ‘‘Sayonara.’’ When the hour of twelve Came, we took with us not only wind chimes, flowers, and Japanese lanterns, but memories of our prom to last for- ever. Kay Johnson was electedto represent our class in the Dunn Christmas Pa- rade. Marshals for theyear were Tommi West, chief, Tommy Stewart, Sue Phil- lips, Judy Horne, Ann Coleman, Robert West, Danny Sawyer, Fraley Bost, and Lauren Campbell. Everyone agreed that the year had been a successful one and at the end of the year, Tommi West won the Mathematics Award and the Science Award and for the third time, the E.R. Thomas Award. Judy Horne again won the Home Economics Award. Danny Sawyer won the Public Speaking Award. “At last we were Seniors!’’ How wonderful it was to repeat that sentence to ourselves. Realizing that this was the all important year for us at Erwin High School, we began to work hard to make it a successful one. The following were elected as class officers: President, Ricky Manning; Vice-President, Johnny Woodruff; Secretary, Judy Horne; Treasurer, Dan Bryant; and Sgt.-at-Arms, Max Vann. Editors for the HOURGLASS were Tommi West and Ann Coleman. Mrs. Edna Parker, Mr. Tommy Davis and Mr. Mike Kelley served as faculty advisors. Danny Sawyer was elected president of the Student Council. Jatana Wilson served as Chief Cheerleader with Charlotte Crawford as Co-chief. All-Conference football players were Tommy Stewart, Fraley Bost, and Max Vann. Conni Surles was chosen as Homecoming Queen. A.F. Lee served as president of the Key Club and Fraley Bost as president of the Beta Club. We chose Sherry Lamberth to be our Miss Merry Christmas representative and Jatana Wilson represented the Spanish class. The HOURGLASS Court was chosen by the senior class. They were Ann Coleman, Tommi West, Susan Ennis, Charl- otte Crawford, Jatana Wilson, Sherry Lamberth, Kay Johnson, Sylvia Turnage, and Hannah Carpenter. From these girls, the faculty chose our HOURGLASS Queen and two maids of honor. Many memories were made as the time quickly passed away leading to our graduation day--memories that will never cease to be in our hearts and minds-- for these were the years that were--years never to be forgotten. It is time for my next guests,’’ We all turn to leave with amazement written all over our faces, As we make Our exit we run into a crowd of people that look mighty familiar. “It s the old gang!”’ “Yea, that’s ALF, Lee, Larry McLamb, Jerry Gautier, Dot Hawley and Joseph Harper.”’ They did not recognize us because we went out one door and they were going into another one. ‘“‘Wait a minute. Who are those two girls over there?’’ ‘‘Gee whiz, that’s Evelyn Horton and Barbara Taylor. They surely do look good, and I understand they are planning to marry soon,”’ We had only gone but a few paces when it dawned on us that the gypsy looked familiar. “‘Why, he looks just like Dan Bryant--but that’s impossible, he is still trying to learn to drive a school bus without hitting something.”’ “If they only knew!”’ Dan Bryant Prophet ‘Hot durn, if it ain’t Uncle Alex in a buttlin’ suit!’’ ‘Who'll get an Oscar?’”’ ere Comes Charlie!”’ } ; ‘‘The Hooting-nannies hoot....
