Hoping somehow to partially pay her for the faith she has shown in us, the Senior Class of 1966 wishes to dedicate this edition of the HOURGLASS to MRS, BEULAH TEW POPE p Dr, Norwood Earl Jones Dear Seniors: If, in your high school education, you have acquired a min- ium of fundamental knowledge and skills -- skill in handling source materials, ability to think an d act in the presence of unprecedented situations, and an ethical attitude toward theuse of your knowledge and skills-- you have acquired the basic education necessary for a fair start in life. You are afforded the high privilege of living during one of the great times in history, but with privilege comes responsibility. Let me put it like this, with sober, startling frankness and Clarity: It may be that God has entrusted you personally and individually with a particular mission to perform, It may make a difference to all eternity what you do! In the differing days ahead for each of you there will be problems, Let no one try to tell you that life is meant to be easy, Life is not easy, and it is not perfectly ordered, Every man is the trustee of the life entrusted to him. How he discharges this personal trust is his test. It is possible for. many of you to go through life without ever realizing that you are undergoing a test, without recognizing your responsibilities, Through the way you live your lives, you can make a con- tribution to mankind’s eternal progress, It may not be spectacular, but it counts, The efforts you make to live more purposefully, more nobly, entitle you to feel that in some measure at least you are discharging honorably the responsibility entrusted to you, The miracle or the power that elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the inner prompting of a brave and determined spirit. For it was you that made our years at EHS so memorable. It is because of you that we recall so fondly that big party... cramming for exams...the big game. For it is people, not, the place or occasion, that make events so memorable. To you we, the Seniors of 1966, leave the privilege and obligation of striving and working at Erwin High School. You shall take Student Fr j [ our place, and perhaps we shall soon be forgotten. But you, whose lives have been so closely woven with ours for four years, will long be remembered. Each picture on the following pages will have an individual meaning to each of you, Perhaps the memories will fade as these pages are thumbed through year after year. Ironically, itis seldom that we express orally our gratitude to the persons who have strived so diligently to make our school days an endearing memory. As we come to the end of our senior year, we cling to these memories. We also suddenly realize the boundless debt we owe to our parents. whose love, faith, and concern have enabled us to believe in ourselves and our ability to contribute to society. Our joy over triumphs and distress over defeats have only been equaled by that of our parents. Without their concern, we should never have learned the supreme lesson of love and faith outside ourselves. We realize that the only means of truly expressing thankfulness to our parents is to live worthy of the love they have fostered for us. As a beginning, the seniors of 1966 dedicate this page of the HOURGLASS to our parents and guardians. Wood Class History i This Spting we, the Senior Class of 1966, will receive our long-awaited diplomas, This will be an _ exciting and thought-provoking occasion, when we shall recall fading memories of our days at Erwin _ High School. Those memories of our Freshman year are perhaps difficult to recall, as we think of the many varied _ experiences that have crowded our memory. We elected the following officers to lead us through this _ year of strange faces and unfamiliar classes: Kenneth Price, President; Billy Graham, Vice-president: _ Shirley Stephenson, Secretary; J.W. Aman, Sergeant-at-Arms. Several Freshman boys were reminded of _ their “‘inferior’’ rank as they were initiated into the Key Club. Many of our class brought us recognition _ through participation in various sports, We learned much, or thought we did, for we knew little of the lessons to come, _ Massacred frogs, Beta Club tapping, ‘‘les francais’’ memories of our Sophomore year. As more Mature citizens of EHS, we elected these capable leaders: Juvone Carroll, President; Frederick Thomas, Vice-president; Shirley Stephenson, Secretary; Carolyn Byrd, Treasurer; J.W, Aman, Sergeant-at-Arms. _ Nineteen members of our class worearelieved smile as they were tapped into the Beta Club, Elaine West __was elected treasurer of the Student Council. Kenneth Price distinguished our class by being the only __ Sophomore named to the All-Conference football team. Anna Blowers was selected to represent our class in the Dunn Christmas Parade. Carolyn Byrd received the French Award and Biology Award. Dianna Bennett also added spark to our cheerleaders by joining the squad. Thoughts of the Prom, HI-LITE, and finally being upperclassmen filled our minds as we became Juniors. Our first step in making our Junior year unforgettable was the election of the following officers: ‘Kenneth Price, President; Henry Johnson, Vice-President; Carolyn Byrd, Secretary; Elaine West, Treasurer; Ralph Lucas, Sergeant-at-Arms. With the help of Mrs. Sarah Hudson, known affectionately as ‘‘Ma’’, and our co-editors, Carolyn Byrd and Danny Ralph, the Erwin HI LITE was a big success, Two of our mumber were officers of the Student Council: Kenneth Price, Vice-president; Kaye Lasater, Secretary. Other members of our class assumed positions of leadership in various clubs. ‘‘Pick-a-Dilly’’, the Junior play concerning the marriage of three sisters, starred Jane Odom and Kenneth Price. The play, directed by Miss Judy Jackson was enjoyed by everyone, especially the actresses and actors. Marshals for the _ year were as follows: Carolyn Byrd, Chief, Elaine West, Dwight Stephens, Marcia Stewart, Ralph Lucas, Kaye Lasater, Everette Ryals, Frederick Thomas, and Barbara Houston. Carolyn Byrd received the History _ Awa@rd, and Sue Faircloth won the Home Economics Award for Proficiency. Kenneth Price was again selected to the All-Conference football team. The climax of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom, constructed around the theme of ‘‘Stardust.’’ On the night of May 7, a picture of enchantment composed of glittering stars, soft lights, and happy faces greeted all visitors to Erwin Gymnasium, Class tings, deadlines, graduation, ‘‘last year’, old friends thoughts that filled our minds as we began our Senior year. We also entered our Senior year with the purpose of making it the best ever _ for ourselves and our school. We opened this year with the selection of the following officers: J.W, Aman, President; Dwight Stephens, Vice-president, Brenda Blackman, Secretary; Elaine West, Treasurer; Henry Johnson, Sergeant-at-Arms. Co-editors of the HOURGLASS were Carolyn Byrd and Danny Ralph, Elaine West was chosen to receive the DAR award. Two of our class nominated for the Morehead Scholarship were Frederick Thomas and Ralph Lucas. Being Seniors, we accepted the responsibility of leadership in school clubs. Elected by the entire student body, Ralph Lucas served as president of the Student Council. Other important offices held by Seniors were the following: Dwight Stephens, President of the Beta Club; Kenneth Price, President of the Key Club; Cheryl Williamson, President of the FBLA; Sue Faircloth, pres- ident of the FHA; Kaye Lasater, President of the Math and Science Club. Ralph Lucas and Kenneth Price were co-captains of the winning football team, Dianna Bennett became Chief-Cheerleader. It seems hardly possible that four years of our lives could have passed so swiftly, but they have given us more than memories, wonderful though they are. They have given us the knowledge, ability, and confidence to make the remainder of our lives as meaningful as these last four years. Historian Frederick Thomas 192? He moves slowly across the littered field, As he reaches the concession stand, he flips a quarter on the counter which ironically spins around. Instead of stopping flat, it stands straight up on its edge with no support. Within the next instant the entire field is covered by a mystical cloud of fog which seems to sweep down and take everyone with it, except the lone stranger. Glancing around, he sees a tattered banner proclaiming, ‘‘Welcome home, Seniors of 1966,’’ over a reserved section of seats. He smiles, nodding his head as if to say. ‘‘Boy. what great times we had!”’ Suddenly a gust of wind deposits a program at his feet. Looking closer, he sees the names and occupations of all the Seniors of 1966 listed. Eager to see if they had made use of the old patterns or if new patterns had been constructed, he sits down and is soon absorbed in the torn bit of paper. The paper contained the following list: R.A. Remember the Key Club LUNCHEON meetings...Student Council elections..,HI- LITE deadlines ete waiting nervously to be tapped into the Beta Club... selling football programs for the FBLA in arctic weather... working frantically to remain in the Beta Club.,.FHA parties..,Language Club Christmas carols... yearly Monogram Club meetings... and of course, your hardworking HOURGLASS Staff? Remember? It is in clubs and organizations that we apply the material learned in lefeye) ses and class- rooms. This is the way we solve problems and get things done, Club mem- bership affords us friends, hard work, fun, and memories. These memories will remain with : us, for they have developed us into well-rounded individuals ready to tackle ‘e) and solve problems together. It is the wish Va Cl LO A} S of the HOURCLASS Staff that the following pages will recall to your mind pleasant memories of friends projects accomplished, and lessons learned.
