Class History It seems as though it were only yesterday that we were freshmen, Excited and confused, we scampered about the campus, getting into the wrong classes, However, after two weeks we settled down and chose the following students to represent us as class officers: President, Linda Gregory; Vice-President, Driscoll Bar - bour; Secretary, Jonnie Ennis; Treasurer, Jimmy Harper. The class made a good start when several of the boys made the football, basketball, and baseball teams. We were also well represented in the various clubs with members in the F.T.A., F.H.A., and with representatives on the Student Council. As sophomores we gained self-confidence. We settled down for a year of hard work which resulted in the tapping of fourteen of our classmates into the Beta Club, They were Mary Simmons, Judy Wade, Melba Hardin, Jimmy Woodruff, Jan Avery, Theron Miller, Jr., Billy Melvin, Vicki Williams, Madeline Powell, Sandra Gregory, Tillie Blackmon, Patricia Byrd, Shirley Byrd, and Ann Adair. Three were elected as offi - cers for the coming year. Vicki was chosen Secretary; Ann, Vice-President, and Judy, Historian. The leaders of our class for that year were Jimmy Woodruff, President; Linda Gregory, Vice-President; and Sec- retary-Treasurer, Driscoll Barbour. “We're Juniors! We're Juniors, was the cry heard as we entered our junior year as upperclassmen. This year was to be one of the mos t thrilling years of our lives. We would publish the HI-LITE, present a play, and, most exciting of all, give the junior-senior prom, The class elected Tillie Blackmon and Billy Melvin as co-editors of the school newspaper. Those working closely with them were Vicki Williams and Ricky Odom as co-business managers and ever faithful sponsor of the three years, Mrs, Sarah Hudson, better known as Mom Hudson,” Before Christmas we presented the junior play, Which Shall He Marry? , a three-act comedy directed by Mr. Joe Woodworth. As the homecoming activities rolled around, the juniors were well represented on the court by five sweethearts. Our own Vicki Willi ams was crowned queen. The others on the court were Pat Byrd, Betty King, Tillie Blackmon, and Judy Wade, The highlight of thé year was the PROM. We started work in April; the big night was to be on May 12. The theme that we chose was An Evening In Paris.” We will always remember the work that turned the gym into a dreamland that seemed to cave in at midnight. The officers for the year were President, Jimmy Woodruff; Vice-President, Sammy Bryant; Secretary, Vicki Williams; and Treasurer, Driscoll Barbour. ; Finally, we were the all-important seniors, We immediately started working hard to make the best of our last year at Erwin High School, The class officers for the year were Sammy Bryant, President; Bennie Godwin, Vice-President; Vicki Williams, Secretary; Linda Gregory, Treasurer; and Sergeant-at-Arms, Ricky Odom. Our class chose Melba Hardin and Jimmy Woodruff to be co-editors of the HOURGLASS. Helen Guin and Roy Godwin were elected to serve as co-business managers, Ricky Odom was elected President of the Student Council, Vicki Williams was chosen by the faculty to receive the D,A.R. Citizenship Award. Billy Melvin and Jimmy Woodruff were selected as the nominees for the coveted Moorehead Scholarship. Spring brought other events leading to graduation, Thus ends our beloved years at old E.H.S. But these years will never be forgotten; because while reviewing our history for you, we have recaptured many memo- ries that we shall cherish forever. May your days at E.H.S, be as rewarding and happy as ours have been. Historian, Judy Wade ca 29

Class Time: Day in 1973 Occasion: Reunion of the Senior Class of 1963 Place: Small Indian Village near Erwin Ladies and gentlemen: you are about to witness the most outstanding reunion in history. We are approaching a small Indian village in the outskirts of Erwin, North Carolina. The tribe that lives there is called the Apache Tribe. The chief of the first small tribe is none other than Jimmy Woodruff, alias Big Chief Crazy Horse, The assistant chief is the all-time Sammy Bryant, known as Little Chief Riding Bull, Jimmy and Sammy always did show outstanding leadership during our school days, With Jimmy is his most efficient secretary, Judy Wood, I understand Judy really uses her shorthand, Big Chief Crazy Horse has offered to show me around his village. Walking through the village, I see many familiar faces, Hey, Chief, I remember having seen those young squaws standing by that large tepee. Look, its’ Driscoll Barbour, Judy Coats, and Helen Guin. I believe Helen is the one who always wanted to be a nurse. They certainly resemble the family-type; and look, there's Drucilla McDonald, talking to Lois Stewart about her papoose, My, doesn't he look cute! Who are those husky Redskins, carrying deer on their backs? They look like the hunters, Donald Turnage, Joe Odom, and Bobby Phillips. I remember they always did hunt quite a bit. My, just look at those handsome men, standing by that decorated tepee. They look like Larry Matthews and Eddie Miller, I remember they were really ladies’ men. Chief, that young couple who are approaching-aren t they Nixon Aman and Norma Turpin? My, they seem happy! What are those Redskins doing in the clearing? It looks as if they are playing football, Aren't they Al Woodall, Bennie Godwin, and Kelly Horne. They are still keeping up the Redskins tradition. Al Woodall is still the SHINING STAR, Hey, isn't that Bobby Johnson, running with the water bucket. I see that Bobby still is the head water carrier for the Redskins. The redheaded man and his assistant, making those small warriors laugh, are the all-time famous team, Jimmy Harper and Jewell Tyndall, better known as the Big Hearts, Look, isn't that Vicki Williams, following close behind the good-looking brave, Billy Melvin. Those two really made a big hit. Look, those two squaws with books, sitting in front of the school tepee look like Gloria Gulledge and Carolyn Crane, They always did like to study. Listen, do you hear the singing? That voice sounds exactly like Betty King's, It is Betty Ann! And that's Frank Ralph withher; he must be her manager, Thanks, Chief for showing me around your village, but I think I shall stroll over to the next village. Before I go any further, I shall explain that a misunderstanding exists between the two tribes, Because of a fight, Joe McLamb of the Apache Tribe refuses to smoke the peacepipe with Theron Miller of the Co- manche Tribe, We are now entering the Comanche Territory. Its chief is Roy Godwin, Big Chief Sitting Bull, who re- fuses to sign the peace treaty. Roy, after the death of his Great Chief Father, became the Chief of the Comanche Tribe, With Roy is his outstanding and remarkable secretary, Carole Pope, Carole always did like to work, Roy is going to exhibit his tribe for me. Chief, aren't those squaws, who are riding palominos over the hills, Betty Porter and Linda Turnage, They were always interested in horses, 30
