Gayle Ennis Class History But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? In September, 1958, we, a class of unsettled, anxious, andtimidfreshmen, entered Erwin HighSchool. At our first class meeting, we elected the following trustworthy officers: President, Ed Caldwell; Vice-President, John Dowd; Secretary, Carol Toth; and Treasurer, Sue Reardon. Woody Woodall, Carolyn Whittington, Gayle Ennis, Tommy Smith, Lloyd Maynard, and Alice Davis were chosen to represent us on the Student Council. The Future Homemakers claimed the de- pendable homemakers, Frankie Messer and Gayle Ennis, as Vice-President and Treasurer. Several members of our class participated in athletics while Ann Niedzwick, as cheerleader, helped cheer the teamstovictory. Judy Strickland won the scholastic honors that year by winning the E. R. Thomas Award. Study to show thyself a man. Ignorance is the mother of mistake. Do whate'er you have to do with true and earnest zeal. At the beginning of our Sophomore year witha little more confidence, we chose Woody Woodall as Class President; John Dowd, Vice-President; Shelia Thornton, Secretary; and Caron Bethune, Treasurer. Active interest was again taken in sports and other activities. The following mem- bers were tapped into the Beta Club: Caron Bethune, Earl Core, Alice Davis, John Dowd, Bobbie Faircloth, Wanda Lee, Alice McLean, Sandra Ralph, Sue Reardon, Judy Strickland, Shelia Thorn- ton, Carol Toth, Walter Tripp, Carolyn Whittington, and Woody Woodall. The Sophomore Class was well represented this year with eight members in the Student Council. Sue Reardon was elected President of the Future Homemakers of America with Alice Davis, Vice-President. The following boys were tapped into the Key Club: Wyman Autry, Woody Woodall, John Dowd, and Larry Odom. The E.R. Thomas Award was awarded to Judy Strickland and Caron Bethune who also received a scholarship medal. Our Sophomore year showed us that great horizons might be reached. A new year andadded dignity awaited us as Juniors! How wonderful that title sounded. Once again it was election time; it's Woody for President; Vice-President, John Dowd; Secretary, Caron Bethune; and Treasurer, Alice Davis. Woody Woodall was chosen Editor of the HI-LITE with Sue Reardon Associate Editor and Ann Niedzwick Circulation Manager. The student body elected John Dowd as Vice President of the Student Council, and the Beta tapped two other honorees, Kenneth Howell and Margaret Deck. There were thirteen members in the Monogram Club and twenty-one in the Future Teachers’ Club who chose Mary Alice Davis to serve as President and Gayle Ennis, Vice-President. The Key Club recognized the leadership abilities of John Dowd, Wyman Autry, and Larry Odom by entrusting the offices of Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer to them. Our three money-raising projects included selling Christmas cards, selling Erwin Redskins license tags, and presenting a play. This three-act comedy, THE DIZZY DILLONS, was one of the highlights of the year; however, the climax came on May 6, at which time the gymnasium was transformed into a celestial Stairway to the Stars for the Junior-Senior Prom. At the end of the year, Shelia Thornton was awarded the U. S. History award, and Judy Strickland again captured the E. R. Thomas award in addition to the Mathematics award. Proud of a furrow straight, of a hard task done aright--. This is it! Our Senior year. All memoriesare grand and these are the grandest. We elected Wyman Autry for Class President; Mike Stephens, Vice -President; Secretary, Caron Bethune; and Treasurer ,Alice Davis. The class decided to split the responsibility of the HOURGLASS publica- tion, and therefore, elected Woody Woodall and Larry Odom as Co-Editors. Since the red rose was our Class flower, it was decided that red and white would be our class colors while Each for ourselves and others, and all for God was voted a worthy class motto. The D. A. R. award was given appropriately toMary Alice Davis who led the Beta Club as President. Other Beta officers included Caron Ann Bethune, Secretary and Judy Strickland, Treasurer. Our magazine sale was very successful thanks to the members of our senior class. Another delightful feature of the year was the arrivalof the class rings which each of us proudfully wore, but it was sad to know that this was our last year at Erwin. The traditional Junior-Senior Prom which the Juniors presented in our honor, along with the graduation exercises ended our twelfth year as students at Erwin High School. : We won't say that our class will ''set the world afire ' by its progress, but we feel that our accomplishments will be noteworthy in years to come. '. . . With a firm and ample base; And ascending and secure shall to-morrow find its place. Longfellow 24
