And where is the place of understanding? In September, 1958, we, a class of unsettled, anxious, andtimidfreshmen, entered Erwin HighSchool. At our first class meeting, we elected the following trustworthy officers: President, Ed Caldwell; Vice-President, John Dowd; Secretary, Carol Toth; and Treasurer, Sue Reardon. Woody Woodall, Carolyn Whittington, Gayle Ennis, Tommy Smith, Lloyd Maynard, and Alice Davis were chosen to represent us on the Student Council. The Future Homemakers claimed the de- pendable homemakers, Frankie Messer and Gayle Ennis, as Vice-President and Treasurer. Several members of our class participated in athletics while Ann Niedzwick, as cheerleader, helped cheer the teamstovictory. Judy Strickland won the scholastic honors that year by winning the E. R. Thomas Award. Study to show thyself a man. Ignorance is the mother of mistake. Do whate'er you have to do with true and earnest zeal. At the beginning of our Sophomore year witha little more confidence, we chose Woody Woodall as Class President; John Dowd, Vice-President; Shelia Thornton, Secretary; and Caron Bethune, Treasurer. Active interest was again taken in sports and other activities. The following mem- bers were tapped into the Beta Club: Caron Bethune, Earl Core, Alice Davis, John Dowd, Bobbie Faircloth, Wanda Lee, Alice McLean, Sandra Ralph, Sue Reardon, Judy Strickland, Shelia Thorn- ton, Carol Toth, Walter Tripp, Carolyn Whittington, and Woody Woodall. The Sophomore Class was well represented this year with eight members in the Student Council. Sue Reardon was elected President of the Future Homemakers of America with Alice Davis, Vice-President. The following boys were tapped into the Key Club: Wyman Autry, Woody Woodall, John Dowd, and Larry Odom. The E.R. Thomas Award was awarded to Judy Strickland and Caron Bethune who also received a scholarship medal. Our Sophomore year showed us that great horizons might be reached. A new year andadded dignity awaited us as Juniors! How wonderful that title sounded. Once again it was election time; it's Woody for President; Vice-President, John Dowd; Secretary, Caron Bethune; and Treasurer, Alice Davis. Woody Woodall was chosen Editor of the HI-LITE with Sue Reardon Associate Editor and Ann Niedzwick Circulation Manager. The student body elected John Dowd as Vice President of the Student Council, and the Beta tapped two other honorees, Kenneth Howell and Margaret Deck. There were thirteen members in the Monogram Club and twenty-one in the Future Teachers’ Club who chose Mary Alice Davis to serve as President and Gayle Ennis, Vice-President. The Key Club recognized the leadership abilities of John Dowd, Wyman Autry, and Larry Odom by entrusting the offices of Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer to them. Our three money-raising projects included selling Christmas cards, selling Erwin Redskins license tags, and presenting a play. This three-act comedy, THE DIZZY DILLONS, was one of the highlights of the year; however, the climax came on May 6, at which time the gymnasium was transformed into a celestial Stairway to the Stars for the Junior-Senior Prom. At the end of the year, Shelia Thornton was awarded the U. S. History award, and Judy Strickland again captured the E. R. Thomas award in addition to the Mathematics award. Proud of a furrow straight, of a hard task done aright--. This is it! Our Senior year. All memoriesare grand and these are the grandest. We elected Wyman Autry for Class President; Mike Stephens, Vice -President; Secretary, Caron Bethune; and Treasurer ,Alice Davis. The class decided to split the responsibility of the HOURGLASS publica- tion, and therefore, elected Woody Woodall and Larry Odom as Co-Editors. Since the red rose was our Class flower, it was decided that red and white would be our class colors while Each for ourselves and others, and all for God was voted a worthy class motto. The D. A. R. award was given appropriately toMary Alice Davis who led the Beta Club as President. Other Beta officers included Caron Ann Bethune, Secretary and Judy Strickland, Treasurer. Our magazine sale was very successful thanks to the members of our senior class. Another delightful feature of the year was the arrivalof the class rings which each of us proudfully wore, but it was sad to know that this was our last year at Erwin. The traditional Junior-Senior Prom which the Juniors presented in our honor, along with the graduation exercises ended our twelfth year as students at Erwin High School. : We won't say that our class will ''set the world afire ' by its progress, but we feel that our accomplishments will be noteworthy in years to come. '. . . With a firm and ample base; And ascending and secure shall to-morrow find its place. Longfellow 24 Judy Strickland Last Will And Gestament State of North Carolina County of Harnett City of Erwin We, the Graduating Class of 1961, being of sound minds and judgment, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament. Article I To Our Parents: We wish to leave an expression of our love and gratitude for making our school days possible. Article II To the Faculty: We leave assurance that we will use the instruction that they have so patiently given us to the best of our abilities. Article II To Mrs. Jackson and Mr. Vernelson, our Sponsors: We leave our sincere appreciation for the interest and patience you have shown us during our last year in high school. Article IV To Mr. Jones: We leave our eternal gratitude for his untiring efforts to make our lives more prosperous. Article V To the Juniors: We leave what senior privileges we might have had, the press room and the honor of walking into chapel last. Article VI During our years of school we have acquired special abilities which we would like to bestow upon the members of the Junior Class. Ann Niedzwick leaves her position as chief cheerleader to Dorinda Avery. ''The sweetest noise on earth, a woman's tongue. Drucilla McDonald and Linda Faircloth leave their ability to catch a man hook, line, and sinker to Millie Bryant. Love and marriage. Alice McLean and L. C. Norris leave their witty remarks to Nancy Lucas and Jerry Bayles. Life to me is just a comedy. Mary Alice Davis leaves her winning smile to Pam Strickland and Brenda Raynor. Her very frowns are fairer far than the smiles of other maidens. Carolyn Whittington leaves her toptemper but pleasing personality to Carolyn Tyson and Carolyn Melvin. She that has plenty of pepper will pepper her own cabbage. Lloyd Maynard leaves his ability to keep his cigarettes hidden from the coach to Randy Wicker. That'll be 50 laps, boys. Frankie Messer and Wanda Lee leave their basketball ability to Sharon Murray and Melba Mason. Eat those Wheaties, girls. Bobbie Jewel Faircloth and Virginia West leave their friendliness to Catherine Avery and Linda Johnson. ''A friend in need is a friend indeed. Caron Bethune leaves her intelligence to Elizabeth Faircloth. Grace is given of God, but know- ledge is bought in the market. Everett Thomas wills his leadership ability to Bert Cameron and Joe Miriello. Sharp's the word for them. Sue Reardon and Peggy Hester leave their various carefree ways to Faye Parker. Well! Everything can't be perfect! Gayle Ennis leaves her ability to get a man to Janice Avery. ''What is this thing called love? Judy Strickland, Testator Witness: Alice McLean 26 Peggy Hester Class Prophecy Hello, ladies and gentlemen. I am very glad that you could come with me today on the first public trip around the world in the 1980 Whizmobile. This most unusual method of transportation is the result of five years of study and research by Douglas Cameron, President of Chevrolet Motors Inc.; Wyman Autry, owner of the world's largest dragstrips; and Woody Woodall, owner of Kaiser Motors Inc. Due to the fantastic speed of this amazing vehicle, the trip can be made in lessthantwo hours. It will take us a little longer today, however, because we will be making a few stops to visit some important people. By the way, speaking of important people, I see several passengers that J would like to introduce to you. The little old lady staring out the window is Mrs. Doris Jackson. Poor soul, she never was quite the same after leaving the '61 Senior Class of Erwin High School. Shelton Price, the distinguished gentlemen in the back seat has made quite a name for himself as a debator. Beside him is his most efficient secretary, Caron Ann Bethune. Also with us on this trip is Frankie Messer, top airline hostess for T. W. A., and Larry Odom, editor of The New York Times with his two assistants, Ronald Stewart and Larry Godwin. Walter Tripp, our driver, has just signalled that he is ready to leave. By the way, Walter won the Best Driving Award in 1979, so the best thing for you to do is sit back, fasten your seat belt, and enjoy the trip. I hope that you remembered to bring your coats because our first stop is in Greenland. Here we find Captain Norman Avery, Lieutenant Frank Marks, and Lieutenant Kenneth Byrd in charge of Air Force matters in this area. Under their command are the capable test pilots Corbett Hall, Earl Core, and Larry Crane. These men have spent so much time in the air that they can almost fly without planes now. As most of you probably remember, Lloyd Maynard was a very suc- cessful electrician while he was in Erwin. However, here he has had quite a bit of trouble with the floor furnaces he installed in the Eskimo's igloos. We must leave Greenland now, but our next stop will be in France. After establishing the La Robe Shoppe in Paris, Wanda Lee and her top fashion designers, Judi Martin, Linda Norris, Sue Warren, and Martha Watkins have astounded the world with their unusual creations. ea, Also, in France we find the world's two most famous artists, Alice McLean and L. C. Norris, who have finally stopped trying to out do each other. Instead, they have combined their efforts to form the largest art gallery ever built. Having left France, we are now moving swiftly toward Africa. If we are lucky, we may be able to see John Dowd, the billionaire, who has come to Africa with Louis Joseph, owner of a chain of large department stores, todo some big game hunting. Accompanying them on this excursion are their wives andalso John's Secretary of Treasury, Carol Toth, and his Executive Secretary, Edwin Stone. Bobby Brown has placed Dale Butler and Thomas Howard in charge of his diamond mines here. They claim that the movie stars, Brenda McDon- ald and Judy Strickland, are their best customers. Hurrying along now, our next stop is China. Oh, did you know that this is where Jane Eanes and her husband are living? Perhaps you've read Jane's book, One Thousand Waysto Serve Rice, which won a Publitzer Prize last year. Those two women on our right are Sue Reardon and Shelia Thornton. They come here every day and beg those poor little silkworms to produce more silk and, from what I hear, their begging pays off. Isn't this exciting, folks? We have just left China and already we are in Australia The sad looking shepherd standing with his flock is Raymond Moore. Raymond is sad because he has traveled all over the world looking for a place without annoying females ; however, he couldn't find one. Spending such a snort time in Australia means that we will arrive in Asia a little ahead of time. Working together, Tommy Smith, Mike Stephens, Wilbert Strickland and Jerry McCaskill have gained control of most of the oil fields in Asia and have made it the largest Oil Corporation in the world. Taking care of the books for them are Mary Alice Davis, Majorie Parker, and Virginia West. Time is getting short so we hurry on to Alaska. Jerry Hudson and J. C. Melvin bought a small track of land in Alaska while it was still a young state. Recently they discovered gold on their property and placed Edward Pope in charge of mining operations. Behind us is a large sporting goods store owned by Edward Norris. Edward believes in testing all his equipment personally; therefore, he hired Keith Strickland as his manager. 28 We are now in Canada and the fur store on your right belongs to the very shrewd fur dealer, Donald Byrd. His ex-secretary, Martha Raynor, thoroughly enjoyed her job until she decided to see how she would look in a bear skin coat, without first making sure that it wasn't still being worn by the bear. On your left you can see the summer house of Linda Faircloth. She and Drucilla McDonald are really in the loot since they wrote their best seller, How to Get a Man. Our trip is almost over and IJ haven't told you about the people in the states. Carolyn Whittington is working for Doctor Everette Thomas as his secretary and it's easy to understand why. Since Doctor Thomas and Edward Ivey, the local undertaker, made a business arrangement, the money seems to be rolling in. Bennie Hall, a very smart lawyer, also gets part of the profits, since somebody made a complaint. Did you realize that most men have their teeth checked once a week since Gayle Ennis, Diann West, and Ann Niedzwick became Dental Hygien- ists. Wayne Vann, one of the best qualified engineers of our time, Paul Dawkins,an Army General, and Governor Daniel Williams are working on a top secret project at present. But it's no secret that Willard Barbour, Bobby Bradshaw, and Arthur Raynor's comedy team is the funniest thing that's hit Hollywood in a long time. Janet Truelove has also made quite a name for herself in Hollywood with Thurman Wilbourne as her agent. Joyce Thomas is Janet's personal beautician and Patsy Pope, her private secretary. The playboys around Hollywood these days are Kenneth Howell, Ed Caldwell, andNorman McLean. They still believe in the old saying, love makes the world go round. Lecturer Sandra Ralphand her secretary, Elaine Manning, have made ten trips around the world. During these trips, Sandra has delivered speeches to the most prominent ladies’ clubs. She obtains some of her information from the well known Professor Eric Vernelson. Scientist Larry Colville and his assistant Margaret Deck have invented anewtonic called ''Age No More. At present they are still improving it, but within a few weeks it will be on the market. Ladies and gentlemen, the first public trip in the Whizmobile has been completed. Ihope that you have enjoyed it enough to go with me on another trip. Until then--goodby. 29 Superlatives Best All Round Most Talented SANDRA RALPH WOODY WOODALL ALICE MCLEAN L. C.
