Historian, Class History Sondra House Early one September morning in 1956, a group of confused and energetic Freshmen entered Erwin High School. Being anxious to take our place, we elected the following class officers: Bob Bost, President; Barbara McCaskill, Vice-President; Janette Adcox, Secretary; and Wayne Avery, Treasurer. Three of our girls, Mar- garet Bradley, Elizabeth Moore, and Barbara Williams became Library Assistants. Many members of the class joined various clubs, and the following were elected as officers of the FHA: Barbara McCaskill, Treasurer; Pat Turlington, Vice-President; Linda Autry, Historian; and Janet Hollingsworth, Song Leader. Larry Barbour was chosen as Secretary-Treasurer of the Industrial Arts Club. We were honored to have Gordon Ennis, Bob Bost, Earl Moore, Glenn Johnson, Hardie Horne, Tommy Barefoot, Bruce Ryals, Ronnie House, and Dale Butler on the foot- ball team. We had two girls, Mickie Crawford and Barbara McCaskill, to make the girls’ basketball team, and Hardie Horne, Ronnie House, Bob Bost, and Earl Moore made the boys’ team. Pat Turlington represented the Freshman Class as a cheerleader. Representatives on the Student Council were Wayne Avery, Bob Bost and Jan- ette Adcox. At Commencement, Linda Autry and Sondra House won the music awards, and Sondra also won the band award. Janette Adcox was also chosen as Miss Erwin High. The next year as Sophomores we were eager to begin a successful year. Therefore, we elected the follow- ing officers: Billy Moore, President; Ronnie House, Vice-President; Connie Stewart, Secretary; and La Verne Johnson, Treasurer. We were happy to have Rosemary Adair, Bob Bost, Mickie Crawford, Sondra House, La Verne Johnson, Earl Moore, Connie Stewart, and Pat Turlington tapped into the Beta Club. Again this year, several members of our class served as officers on various clubs. Ronnie House, Earl Moore, Bob Bost, Hardie Horne, Paul McClanahan, Charlie Lee, Bill Hudson, John Baker, and Allman Hudson represented the Sophomore Class on the football team. Gordon Ennis served as their manager. Betty Dowd, Margaret Bradley, Mickie Crawford, Connie Stewart, and Barbara McCaskill were on the girls' basketball team while Earl Moore, Bob Bost, Ronnie House, and Hardie Horne made the boys’ team. Six of our boys, Buddy Weaver, Hardie Horne, Earl Moore, Charlie Lee, Larry Barbour, and John Baker were on the basketball team. La Verne Johnson and Rosemary Adair were chosen as two of the new cheerleaders. Penny Johnson was chosen as the Varsity Sweetheart at the home- coming Football game, and Pat Turlington won the FHA Award at the close of the year. In September of 1958, we began our Junior year. Eager to make this a successful year, we elected as our officers the following: Billy Moore, President; Earl Moore, Vice-President; Connie Stewart, Secretary; and La Verne Johnson, Treasurer. Billy Moore was elected Vice-President of the Student Council while Pat Turlington served as Treasurer. Once again several members of the class held various positions in the different clubs. Rose- mary Adair and Bill Hudson were chosen as Co-editors of the school paper, the Erwin Hi-Lite, and Mickie Craw - ford served as Business Manager. We were happy to have Betty Dowd and Gordon Ennis tapped into the Beta Club our Junior year. Several girls of the class worked as Library Assistants. We represented Brother Goose” as our Junior Play that year, and it was enjoyed by all in attendance. Mickie Crawford, Janette Adcox, and Annette Adcox were chosen as cheerleaders, and as usual we were well represented on the football, basketball, and base- ball teams our Junior year, We were honored to have Judith Stephens to represent Erwin in the annual Christmas Parade as Miss Merry Christmas. At the close of the year, after a year of hard work raising money, we gave the Seniors a Junior and Senior Prom with Mardi Gras as the theme. At the end of the year, Connie Stewart won the United States History Award, and Sondra House and Linda Autry won the Music Awards. We entered our Senior year with high spirits, eager for a most successful year. Mr. John Honeycutt served as our Senior sponsor. Ready for a good year, the class elected Bob Bost, President; John Baker, Vice-President; La Verne Johnson, Secretary; and Sondra House, Treasurer. We chose white and red as the class colors and the red and white carnation as our flower. For our motto we chose It matters not what you are thought to be, but what you are. Pat Turlington was elected as Editor-in-Chief of the annual, THE HOURGLASS, with Rosemary Adair as assistant editor. Connie Stewart was elected to serve as Business Manager. Pat Turlington became chief cheerleader with the following girls from the Senior Glass helping her: La Verne Johnson, Rosemary Adair, Jan- ette Adcox, Annette Adcox, Mickie Crawford, Judith Stephens, and Rebecca Fowler. We were well represented on the football team with the following Senior boys participating in that sport: Ronnie House, Billy Moore, Bob Bost, Bill Hudson, Earl Moore, Kenn eth Strickland, Allman Hudson, Hardie Horne, and Paul McClanahan. We were also represented on the basketball and baseball teams. Again, we had several members of the class serv- ing as officers of the various clubs and organizations, Then one morning we were notified that our class rings had arrived. The next morning we had in our possessions a prize gift we had long awaited for. Janette Adcox was chosen as Varsity Sweetheart and was crowned by the preceding year's sweetheart. The Washington trip and the annual Junior and Senior Banquet and Prom climaxed a most successful year. Now a long awaited moment has arrived, our graduation. We are proud to be graduates of the 1960 class but sad to leave so many friends and teachers behind. We hope we have left a part of us behind that will remind all those whom we are leaving of the Senior Class of ‘60.
