Being anxious to take our place, we elected the following class officers: Bob Bost, President; Barbara McCaskill, Vice-President; Janette Adcox, Secretary; and Wayne Avery, Treasurer. Three of our girls, Mar- garet Bradley, Elizabeth Moore, and Barbara Williams became Library Assistants. Many members of the class joined various clubs, and the following were elected as officers of the FHA: Barbara McCaskill, Treasurer; Pat Turlington, Vice-President; Linda Autry, Historian; and Janet Hollingsworth, Song Leader. Larry Barbour was chosen as Secretary-Treasurer of the Industrial Arts Club. We were honored to have Gordon Ennis, Bob Bost, Earl Moore, Glenn Johnson, Hardie Horne, Tommy Barefoot, Bruce Ryals, Ronnie House, and Dale Butler on the foot- ball team. We had two girls, Mickie Crawford and Barbara McCaskill, to make the girls’ basketball team, and Hardie Horne, Ronnie House, Bob Bost, and Earl Moore made the boys’ team. Pat Turlington represented the Freshman Class as a cheerleader. Representatives on the Student Council were Wayne Avery, Bob Bost and Jan- ette Adcox. At Commencement, Linda Autry and Sondra House won the music awards, and Sondra also won the band award. Janette Adcox was also chosen as Miss Erwin High. The next year as Sophomores we were eager to begin a successful year. Therefore, we elected the follow- ing officers: Billy Moore, President; Ronnie House, Vice-President; Connie Stewart, Secretary; and La Verne Johnson, Treasurer. We were happy to have Rosemary Adair, Bob Bost, Mickie Crawford, Sondra House, La Verne Johnson, Earl Moore, Connie Stewart, and Pat Turlington tapped into the Beta Club. Again this year, several members of our class served as officers on various clubs. Ronnie House, Earl Moore, Bob Bost, Hardie Horne, Paul McClanahan, Charlie Lee, Bill Hudson, John Baker, and Allman Hudson represented the Sophomore Class on the football team. Gordon Ennis served as their manager. Betty Dowd, Margaret Bradley, Mickie Crawford, Connie Stewart, and Barbara McCaskill were on the girls' basketball team while Earl Moore, Bob Bost, Ronnie House, and Hardie Horne made the boys’ team. Six of our boys, Buddy Weaver, Hardie Horne, Earl Moore, Charlie Lee, Larry Barbour, and John Baker were on the basketball team. La Verne Johnson and Rosemary Adair were chosen as two of the new cheerleaders. Penny Johnson was chosen as the Varsity Sweetheart at the home- coming Football game, and Pat Turlington won the FHA Award at the close of the year. In September of 1958, we began our Junior year. Eager to make this a successful year, we elected as our officers the following: Billy Moore, President; Earl Moore, Vice-President; Connie Stewart, Secretary; and La Verne Johnson, Treasurer. Billy Moore was elected Vice-President of the Student Council while Pat Turlington served as Treasurer. Once again several members of the class held various positions in the different clubs. Rose- mary Adair and Bill Hudson were chosen as Co-editors of the school paper, the Erwin Hi-Lite, and Mickie Craw - ford served as Business Manager. We were happy to have Betty Dowd and Gordon Ennis tapped into the Beta Club our Junior year. Several girls of the class worked as Library Assistants. We represented Brother Goose” as our Junior Play that year, and it was enjoyed by all in attendance. Mickie Crawford, Janette Adcox, and Annette Adcox were chosen as cheerleaders, and as usual we were well represented on the football, basketball, and base- ball teams our Junior year, We were honored to have Judith Stephens to represent Erwin in the annual Christmas Parade as Miss Merry Christmas. At the close of the year, after a year of hard work raising money, we gave the Seniors a Junior and Senior Prom with Mardi Gras as the theme. At the end of the year, Connie Stewart won the United States History Award, and Sondra House and Linda Autry won the Music Awards. We entered our Senior year with high spirits, eager for a most successful year. Mr. John Honeycutt served as our Senior sponsor. Ready for a good year, the class elected Bob Bost, President; John Baker, Vice-President; La Verne Johnson, Secretary; and Sondra House, Treasurer. We chose white and red as the class colors and the red and white carnation as our flower. For our motto we chose It matters not what you are thought to be, but what you are. Pat Turlington was elected as Editor-in-Chief of the annual, THE HOURGLASS, with Rosemary Adair as assistant editor. Connie Stewart was elected to serve as Business Manager. Pat Turlington became chief cheerleader with the following girls from the Senior Glass helping her: La Verne Johnson, Rosemary Adair, Jan- ette Adcox, Annette Adcox, Mickie Crawford, Judith Stephens, and Rebecca Fowler. We were well represented on the football team with the following Senior boys participating in that sport: Ronnie House, Billy Moore, Bob Bost, Bill Hudson, Earl Moore, Kenn eth Strickland, Allman Hudson, Hardie Horne, and Paul McClanahan. We were also represented on the basketball and baseball teams. Again, we had several members of the class serv- ing as officers of the various clubs and organizations, Then one morning we were notified that our class rings had arrived. The next morning we had in our possessions a prize gift we had long awaited for. Janette Adcox was chosen as Varsity Sweetheart and was crowned by the preceding year's sweetheart. The Washington trip and the annual Junior and Senior Banquet and Prom climaxed a most successful year. Now a long awaited moment has arrived, our graduation. We are proud to be graduates of the 1960 class but sad to leave so many friends and teachers behind. We hope we have left a part of us behind that will remind all those whom we are leaving of the Senior Class of ‘60. Class Gang way, folks! Now don't get excited; it isn't an earthquake or a forest fire! It's just the postman stag- gering under a load of letters, magazines, and newspapers, all from my classmates of '60. Shall we open them to see what all our old pals are doing? What an unusual postmark! Why, it's from China! It seems that Connie Stewart has become another Flo- rence Nightingale. She is doing her best to relieve suffering in foreign countries. Now, I see in this newspaper that Dr. Gordon Ennis, Jr. has been named the head of the Psychology Depart- ment at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has really hit the top. Look at this article: Sondra House is the Director of Nurses at Duke Hospital. I'll bet Sondra is still saying: Cute little face, Cute little figure; ‘Stay away, boys, shill get alittle bigsers? This letter is from Rosemary Adair, an English Major, who is now an instructor at the University of the South. She was always quite interested in that field. The return address on this letter reads, THE NEW YORK TIMES, office of the Editor-in-Chief, Well, what do you know? It's from Pat Turlington, our own HOURGLASS Editor. I understand that Pat is doing a wonderful job in New York, just as she did here at E.H.S. Oh, here's a note from my friend, Penny Johnson. She is now owner of the Hollywood Beauty Shoppe, and what's more, Rebecca Fowler and Janette Adcox, two well-known academy award winners, are her best customers. Here's a newspaper clipping. The headline states: W. E. Manning, Winner of the Indianapolis 500. That makes five straight wins for W. E. What a beautiful painting on the cover of this magazine! Look, it Was painted by Linda Autry.) Unis article states that Linda has been presented an award for the most outstanding artist of the year. Guess who has been given a silver loving cup for being the National Champion Hunter of the year? James Wicker, of course. This copy of WILDLIFE MAGAZINE has an article about him. Now, here is really something! Imagine Annette Adcox starring in a movie! This advertisement says that she is a great comedienne, who has a 20-year contract with 20th Century Fox, now owned by Larry Barbour, the great producer. Margaret Lucas is her understudy. This letter bears a postmark from England, Well, what do you know? Betty Lucas, the wife of a very wealthy banker, is touring Europe and Asia with her husband. What a life! Who can be sending us a letter from General Motors? It's from Willie Hartley, president of General Motors; incidentally, I hear that Willie collects hot rods as a hobby. Same old Willee! Here's something a little different - it's a Greyhound Bus advertisement. Just look! Jimmy Parker is owner of this great bus line. Jimmy's assistant is Larry Morgan. They are still in the bus business, just like their high school days. Oh! Here's a letter from La Verne Johnson. She is secretary and wife to the Governor of New York, Billy Moore. Here's the new HIT PARADE MAGAZINE. I see a picture of Margaret Bradley, a great soprano for the Metropolitan Opera Company. Just look at this picture of Judy Allen, Brenda Johnston, and Julia Beasley. They are known throughout the world as the Three Notes. Gee! These girls have really hit stardom. What an impressive-looking letter! Just imagine! It's from Bob Bost, the President of the United States. I understand that he has a very efficient secretary, Betty Dowd, who is the fastest typist in the U.S. Prophecy Letters, letters, and still more letters - this one comes from Paul McClanahan. Paul, an instructor in the field of architecture, has just designed the new Capitol Building. What a job that was! Wow! The class of ‘60 is represented in SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. Ronnie House, star quarterback of the Balti- more Colts, has been chosen as the most outstanding quarterback in pro-football. He is really a great passer, and I understand that Earl Moore, his teammate, makes a great receiver. Now this is really unbelievable. Dr. Bill Hudson, a very capable surgeon, has been presented a medal for the best surgeon of the year. Bill specializes in heart operations, and I've heard that Barbara McCaskill, who is now a surgical nurse, is always ready to help him. This letter is from Jerry Manning, coach of the No, 1 basketball team in the nation, the UNC Tarheels. I always knew he enjoyed basketball, and now he has his own team. This note comes from Dorothea Wilson and Judy Oldham. They are now secretaries for the President of Weaver's Department Store, owned by Buddy Weaver. They also are chairmen of the annual Weaver's Christmas Parade. Even Texas is represented by the Class of ‘60. J. W. Warren and C harles Dorman, new owners of a large oil plant, have reached the $100, 000, 000 mark in sales. Now they have really struck it rich, and I've read that Hardie Horne, owner of a well-known chain of gas stations, is their largest buyer. Here's a photograph of Larry Herring’s Orchestra! He is the new director of the famous Glenn Miller Band. Larry really likes music. In fact, he's the composer of the new Down the Hall Choo Choo. You remember Helen Dennis? Her letter states that she is very much interested in civic affairs. By the way, Helen's husband, Allman Hudson, is now a senator from California. What a beautiful car in this magazine! Let's see. . . It's an advertisement. Tommy Barefoot and Leslie Clark are the owners of Barefoot-Clark Cars, Inc. They really must have a successful business to advertise in the POST. See this photograph? It's Charlie Lee. He's been chosen to serve as ambassador to India. He is really mak- ing a very successful career in the diplomatic service. You haven't forgotten Jesse Godwin, have you? He is the president of the Yellow Cab Company. I've heard that he has as his secretaries, Barbara Williams and Elizabeth Moore, two of the very best students Mrs. Mattox had in her business education classes. Here's the local newspaper. Glenn Johnson is the owner of a very well-known auto repair shop. I have heard that Larry Parker, editor-in-chief of the DUNN DISPATCH, and that Rudolph Reeves, a lawyer, visits him frequently. No class would be complete without a minister. This note is from the Rev. Kenneth Byrd, who is doing much for the betterment of the world. Kenneth Byrd writes that Glenda Haire is soloist in his church. I know you re- member her beautiful voice. Oh! Another letter. This one is from John Baker, the operator of the chain of food stores known as the A P. His excellent secretary is Judy Stephens. By the way, Judy also models in her spare time. Here's a news item of interest. Ray Thomas is the new announcer of W T V D's presentation of an upcoming Hillbilly Show starring Larry Bradshaw and his Mountain Dew Boys. This should really make a big hit. Oh, boy! Another letter. This one comes from Frankie Smith. He has just been elected President of Duke University. I suppose you know that Janet Hollingsworth is Dean of Women there. Last, but not least, is this letter from Kenneth Strickland, a great rock-n-roll singer. Why, he's even more popular than Ricky Nelson. Well, that includes every member of the Class of 60 except me, and I must get back to the hospital and to my patients.
