They ' re only clouds Friendly sometimes but you can never be sure. If I had longer arms I ' d push away the clouds Or make them hang above the water somewhere else But I ' m just a man who wants and needs Mostly things he ' ll never have - Looking for that thing that ' s hardest to find - Himself. I’ve been gone a long time now And along the way I ' ve learned some things. You have to make the good times yourself; Take the little times and make them big times And save the times that are alright For those that aren ' t so great. I ' ve never been able to push the clouds Away by myself. Help me - Please. In truth it pictures not my destination But my life. For love was offered me, and I shrank from its disillusionment; Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid; Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances. Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life And now I know that we must lift the sail And catch the winds of destiny Wherever they drive the boat. To put meaning in ones life may end in madness, But life without meaning is the torture Of restlessness and vague desire - It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid. But it was cloudly that day and I was lazy, so I just stayed in bed thinking about it. I wanted to write you one last long love song that said what I feel one final time; not comparing your eyes and mouth to the moon and the stars. But telling you only how like yourself that you are. But by the time I thought of it found a pen; put the pen to ink . . .You were gone. So this song has no words. Rod McKuen 33 Administration KENNETH M. SMITH Principal 34 Faculty 72-73 MR. And you either enjoy, or con- tinue your own way in a daze. 62 63 I 64 With the coming of football season at E.H.S. everything livens up. Shown here are scenes from a skit performed before the Wise Indians game. Top left, Mean Indians; alias Brenda Chaffin, Monica Wolford, and Regina Martin. Top right, Indians torturing good Rebel Soldier; alias Sandra McCowan. Left Rebels mourning death of a comrade. Opposite page, top, the Rebel Soldiers; alias cheerlead- ers exeute Indians. Bottom, E.H.S. fans. 65 66 The excitement was running high by Sept. 2. Our team’s offensive and defensive line are shown on the opposite page. On this page in the top picture Darvis Richardson carries the ball, aided by Bradley Lambert ' s blocking. Left, the cheerlead- ers doing one of their pom-pon routines. 67 68 Shown on the opposite page, at left are action shots of the Coeburn game. At the top of the page is the band pepping up the Rebel Cheering section. On this page is more action shots of the football game. 69 70 Homecoming week was full of activities. The Booster Club and FFA spent many long hours preparing the float and organ- izing the halftime show. The Class of ' 74 is either extremely wild or extreme- ly intelligent. One of their projects was an all girls football game. The Junior girls played the Sophomore girls at the end of the regular football season. The players punted, tackled, fumbled, screamed, laughed, and cussed. Tempers flared, the girl cheerleaders were knockouts, and the audi- ence roared with laughter. All in all the game was financially a great success. 73 - M . 74 75 76 Opposite page, Top Left: Mrs. Riddle goin ' frolicing. Top Right: What can you say about Roger Rasnick? We feel that with a little luck along the way we could have won the district championship; we finished second in regular season play and placed two players, Will- iam Williams and Frank Gulley, on all district teams. 81 a ' A Vi 1 tT W i m ' y n j Opposite Page, Top Left: Norma Riddle kept the score and Mr. Potter kept the buzzer buzz- ing. Above: This is Regina Lambert and Judy Martin doing a cheerleading stunt, but we can’t explain what the stunt is. Left: Rodney in for another lay up. 83 Happiness Is When Your Rebel Team Wins 85 86 Our basketball season was full of ups and downs. We lost to Wise and Coeburn, but we were THE FIRST to beat Pow- ell Valley. The phrase, Taking the bitter with the sweet was whispered after an upset and a great lesson was to be learned by this. If you lose you can ' t help being disappointed, but as long as you remember that the Rebels ARE THE BEST, everything is a little easier to swallow. Opposite Page, Top Left: Trigh Dotson, who officiated several of our games. Oppo- site Page and this Page: At our last home game against Coeburn which we won by a score out 82-77, our players cut the nets to celebrate their last victory for our sen- iors. Their performance won no Tony Awards, but it provided opportunity for self-expression as well as being fun for the students. The play consist- ed of the following cast: Mr. Slater Wade Mullins Mrs. Slater Gay Rose Victoria Charlotte Phillips Mrs. Jordan Nadine Little Ben Jordan Dean Compton Abel Merryweather Gary Smith 89 Ira Rose and Ricky Murphy practice wiring on a panal board. Electricity is just one of the many courses available to the students at the Vocational School. Jerry Sweeney, Tommy Skeens, Mark Dabbs, and Carl Bailey at work in the body shop. Nancy French, Kathy Neece, Linda Martin, Gail Gilda Fletcher takes part in the cosme McMillan, and Janice Neece learning the skills of tology course, being a nurse. The 4-1 program is just one of the many assets of the vocational school. 91 Looking in on Vocational Classes Masonry Class take time out for classroom instruction. Richard Colley, Elizabeth Goode, Jerry Oldham, and Dean Madere prepare to learn the fundamentals of drafting. The administration, with an attempt to stop the wide spread epidemic of Spring Fever, initiates a clean up day. At the top of the page you see some industrious students working their little hearts out. If you look closely you will see several Spring Fever infected students, enjoying themselves to death. 94 Spring is supposed to blossom with newness and excitement. It did when the traditional occa- sion of receiving class rings at the first of your senior year was dropped. We got ours at the end of our junior year. Bottom - ' 3’ers waiting and getting their class rings. Last year at Ervinton everyone ignored out track team. The lack of interest in our track team is an example of a lot of peoples stupi- dity. In ' 72 our track team came within an inch of capturing the Lonesome Pine Title, the first for any Ervinton team! There were 10 boys participating in the District Meet and 16 places were captured. We had 7 boys par- ticipating in the State Meet. 95 First Page: TOP LEFT; Billy Gulley dressed for Monogram Club Initiation: TOP RIGHT; Boys model costumes: MIDDLE RIGHT; New Members wait in gym: MIDDLE LEFT; New members Tony, Barry and Larry: BOTTOM; Coach Phipps with new members. The prom of ' 72 required the diligent work of class members. From the designing of the wall paper, to the diplomacy used to obtain invitations for outside guests, a spirit of cooperation prevailed. We set our goal and we achieved it when the prom of ' 72 was praised as the best .
