by The Senior Class of Ervinton High School Nora, Virginia Vol. 21 1 FOREWORD I We proudly present to you, our fellow classmates, your 1972 PIONEER. Travel with us through these few pages and see your memories . . . hopes . . . dreams . . . ambitions . . . headaches . . . failures. This was our high school. May this book keep the marvelous memories; and may it draw your friends, who were very dear, close to you after you leave Ervinton High School. As we live today, this book will live for us as we get older. The book will be remembered when we are forgotten. To all who made this yearbook possible, our sponsors, staff, faculty, and many others, we wish to express our deepest thanks. Mel began her service to Ervinton High School in the mid-thirties as cook in the old high school building which was converted to the present elementary school. When the new high school building was opened in 1955, Mel came along to be sure that everyone had a chance to enjoy a nourishing, home-cooked meal of unforgettable goodness. In her years of association with us she has seen many students come and go, each of whom has been more than just a face and a name. They have been of individual interest to her because they have been one of her family. Although she is now retired, and is at school only when a substitute is needed in the kitchen, she is not forgotten by students or faculty. So, Mel, as we take leave of Ervinton High School we sincerely hope your remaining years may be full of health and happiness . 3 THESE PEOPLE HELP PROVIDE A PLEASANT ATMOSPHERE FOR EVERYONE. SHIRLEY MULLINS Head Cook MAE RASNICK Cook FAYE GREENE Cook LANIS TAYLOR Custodian PHYLLIS S. RINGLEY Secretary 4 w We the Class of 1972 would like to take this opportunity to offer our thanks and appreciation to Mr. Kenneth M. Smith who has been our principal since we began high school. He has proven to be a real friend to each senior. He has al- « ways offered a helping hand in solving our problems and advised us properly. We are fortunate to have spent five years under his capable direction. Again, we say Thanks! 6 MR. FARRELL SUTHERLAND As our time at Ervinton High School rapidly draws to a close, we pause briefly to think of the friends we leave behind. One member and administrator, who is always willing to devote his time and efforts to the interest of his students. His thoughts are always centered around others instead of himself, and his devo- tion and dedication to his profession and to the welfare of his students will be well remembered by all who have known him. For faithfulness, dependability, and integrity, the annual staff, speaking on behalf of the student body, with deep appreciation would like to say thanks for the opportunity of having known such a person. Thank you, Mr. Farrell Suther- land . 7 OUR GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT JESS. B. LOCKHART B.S., E.T.S.U. BILLIE S. CRUM B.S., M.A. , E.T.S.U. The duties of a Guidance Department are very numerous. The Guidance D irectors must be willing to listen to the students, they must help the student, during high school, to decide upon the courses that will be of the most benefit to him in his post-graduate years. They must be well informed concerning our colleges and universities and they must inform the student about what these institutions of higher learning have to offer to him as an individual. They must keep abreast with ( the employment system of our nation and they must help the student to choose his cor- rect position in this complex society. They must understand the student, his abihties and ambitions: they must look upon each student as a challenge and say, I hope I can help him rise to the top! We are proud to say the Guidance Department at Ervinton High believe and prac- tice all of the above. 8 MR. HARRY ARRINGTON B.S., E.T.S.U. Geography MR. A. F. BREEDING B.A., L.M.U. Amid the hustle and confusion we finally got into a somewhat shabby fonna- tion and waited for the processional to begin. My nerves were vibrating with the ex- citement of what was happening, yet I was not completely aware of my surroundings. As the graduating class began slowly moving into the auditorium, my mind was ponder- ing the big question - After Graduation, what next? I distinctly remember passing through the doors, but there 1 seemed to be caught up in a sudden whirlwind which caught our class up in its swirling movements and carried us high into the air and scat- tered us in many directions. As 1 was about to fall from the clutches of this fading force I found myself enclosed in a crystal-clear bubble, gently and safely floating through the brilliant sunshine from above, while shouts of joy and laughter and song warmed my soul like the warmth of the sun. As I glanced downward I realized my bub- ble was descending into a thick, heavy fog blotting out the sunshine, the joyous sounds giving way to sounds of anger and despair. My eyes quickly adjusted to the dim light but 1 was cold and filled with fear as 1 bumped along among a teeming throng of hu- manity. 1 was a stranger in a vast world of the miserable, but an occasional familiar face glanced my way through eyes that reflected the sorry plight of those who had lost these miserable people. Some reached out toward me with hands bent on doing me harm, others offered me strong drinks, some spat upon me and tried to kick my bubble to pieces. As 1 tried to mingle with the crowd cop, deceitful politicians, forgers, murderers, drug addicts, alcoholics, the prostitute, the rapist, false prophets and a multitude so great no man could count. An angry crowd threw my bubble high into the air and 1 noticed a shadow on the bottom of it . 1 looked up to see what caused the shadow and 1 saw a bright light shin- ing through the thick smog which drew my bubble quickly upward into a world of light. Here my bubble began to transform itself into a floating platform. As I began to ap- proach the source of this light 1 saw a numberless multitude of all races, and tongues, singing America the Beautiful, which gave way to the beautiful hymns of our moun- tain churches. Here indeed was the world of honest people, from the lowly street cleaner to the highest office in the land. 1 was spellbound by the harmony and beauty of this magnificent land. As 1 was approaching a huge building I heard a voice call my name and say, Come, the hour is here for you to take your place among us, for you are one of Us. As 1 approached a locked door, a hand held out a small package to me and said, Here is your key, and your assignment. Go find your place. 1 reached out to receive the package when 1 suddenly realized 1 was on stage re- ceiving my diploma and a small Bible, which 1 gratefully accepted. With this vision deeply embedded in my mind 1 said good-by to my fellow classmates, and walked from the building, without a single backward glance, confident 1 would soon find my rightful place in a wonderful land. 32 JUNIORS Kiser, Cappi; Pres. Some of us have already made up our minds as to what course in life we wish to follow: some are undecided and still there are others among us who are content just to drift along and accept whatever fate hands out. As we look back over our earlier days in elementary school, we can not help but pause in our reflections long enough to wonder about our former classmates who are no longer with us. Since we are only Freshmen, we have much more to look forward to than what we have left behind us; however, it makes us wonder about how many of our present class will walk up to claim a diploma three years from now. So, come on gang, let ' s get with it and go after that diploma; then we can walk out of here with more confidence that our lives will be full of meaning and not as empty as this hallway. 46 f JUNIOR HIGH President - Mona Rasnick Vice-President - Cathy McCowan Secretary - Billy Slemp Reporter - Grade Lasseck Student Council - Allen Yates Student Council - Paul Slamp Patrick Addington David Austin Randall Bailey Ann Beavers Jerry Boyd Joseph Boyd Bryan Breeding Terry Brooks David Carlton Dennis Castle Earl Castle Mike Castle Nancy Castle Kathy Chandler Danny Charles Kathy Charles Ricky Collins Sandra Cooper O . These people have made our dream of successful yearbook become a reality with their generous contribu- tions. Most people fail to realize the Important part these people play in the publication of an annual, but without their financial support this feat would never be accomplished. Since these people have been so kind to us, we should show our gratitude by patronizing their firms.
