Mr. Jess B. Lockhart came to Ervington High School 12 years ago. Having obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at East Tennessee State, in 1959, he began as a teacher on the Ervington High Staff. History and social studies were two of his specialties. Six years later, in 1965, he became planner and our guidance director. Upon entering Ervington High in 1966, we Seniors have been under the careful direction of Mr. Lockhart and his well advised associates. Thus, at this time we wish to express our deepest and most gracious appreciation. Mr. Lockhart, thank you! Guidance and Counseling Mrs. Billie K. Crum began her career as a teacher at Ervinton High upon the completion of the new building in 1955. At that time, she was engaged in teaching sci- ence, chemistry, and English. In intervening years, be- tween 1958 and 1966, she held various positions in the other county schools. Upon her return in 1966, she be- came involved in the field of guidance and resumed her next position as a teacher. Mrs. Crum was also one of the three advisors who guided us Seniors from our eighth grade flight to our present sta- tus. So, to you, Mrs. Crum, our thanks for your five years of understanding and guidance.

Being chosen teacher of the year by the class of ' 71 was a genuine surprise to me. As you know, I have often disagreed with you, both as a class and as individuals, but I would like to be- lieve that these disagreements have been eye-openers to both you and me. In these encounters you and I have developed a character- istic called perseverance. This characteristic, which will cause you to stick with what you start, will be one of the most worth- while things you can learn — in school or out. Without it you will be known as a quitter, and if you let yourself be labeled that way then you can say farewell to your self respect. Then what? But this and much more you will learn. And this learning that you will do will bring you to new decisions, or, if you wish, a choice of doors. Behind these doors will be the consequences of your decisions. Weigh carefully all aspects of the problem, inclu- ding personal responsibility and consequences, and then, using all of the perseverance at your command, and the boldness that comes as a result of having made a decision, open those doors. Open those doors and continue opening doors as long as you live. Your life will be what YOU make it. If I can be a help to you when you are reaching these decis- ions or when you are carrying them out, please feel free to ask. This honor that you have paid me has put me in your debt. Maybe I can begin to repay that debt by wishing you a little ambition, more luck and a great amount of- perseverance . Teachers of To the graduating class of 1971, I express my gratitude for being selected teacher of the year. I hope that your vote of confidence is a result of something I might have said or done which will benefit you when you leave Ervinton High School and establish a place for yourself in this complex soci ety in which we live. You are very fortunate to be young at a time when there is much emphasis on youth and youth ' s ideas. Young people all over the world are expressing themselves. They are be- coming concerned with and involved in solutions to world problems. I feel that you people have much to offer toward solving these problems and I sincerely hope that we, the teachers and staff of Ervinton High School, have, in some way, helped to prepare you for what lies ahead. Today, we hear a great deal about peace, freedom, and love of fellowman from people, who in reality, hate, are violent, and inconsiderate of practically everyone. Graduates! Let me urge ample of peace, freedom, and love of fellowman. If you remember nothing else from your five years at Ervinton High School, re- member that expression of kindness and consideration for your fellow human being are two necessary assets for a happy and successful life. I feel a particular attachment to this class perhaps be- cause it was my first one and I shall miss all of you. Feel free to call on me if I can be of any help to you in the future. the Year Best wishes for success and happir
