THE PIONEER 1971 Ervinton High School Nora, Virginia Volume 20 i Foreword As members of the yearbook s taff of ’71, we wish to express our sincere thanks to the many people who have contributed their time, effort, and financial assistance in making this publication possible. We particularly wish to express our grateful appreciation to our advisor, Mr. Vilous Mullins, for his patience and guidance during the trying months of the construction of this yearbook. To the student body, we hope that this year ' s Pioneer will serve as a token of ful- fillment and fondness now and for years to come. Contents TITLE PAGE FRESHMAN FOREWARD SOPHOMORES CONTENTS JUNIORS DEDICATION SENIORS SCHOOL PERSONNEL ACTIVITIES ADMINISTRATION ATHLETICS GUIDANCE ORGANIZATIONS TEACHER OF THE YEAR WHO’S WHO JUNIOR HIGH ADVERTISEMENTS 2 Our Dedication Emerson once wrote, The secret of education lies in respecting the pupil. We feel that not only Mr. Emerson had this point of view, but it is also the opinion of Mr. Farrell C. Sutherland, to whom we dedicate this yearbook as a small token of our great esteem. Through- out his years of service here at Ervington High School, we have found him to be a person of inspiring character, strong will, and honorable nature. For these things, Mr. Sutherland, we thank you. 3 School Personnel Mr. Charles Taylor custodian Mrs. Phyllis Ringley secretary Mr. Paul Sutherland n.y.c. co-ordinator 4 ADMINISTRATION W e would like to take this op- portunity to express our thanks to Mr. Kenneth M. Smith who for the past 3 years has been serving as our principal. He has listened to our many problems and advised us accordingly. He h a s given us the understanding relationship that should exist between the principal and the students. Mr. Smith has his B.A. at Bridgewater and his M. S. at Madison. Thanks! Administration We would like to express our gratitude to Mr. Farrell C. Sutherland whohas faithfully served as the as- sistant principal for several years. As well as render- ing his services as assistant principal, Mr. Sutherland has extended his warm friendship and his under- standing to all. Thanks ! 6 Mr. Jess B. Lockhart came to Ervington High School 12 years ago. Having obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at East Tennessee State, in 1959, he began as a teacher on the Ervington High Staff. History and social studies were two of his specialties. Six years later, in 1965, he became planner and our guidance director. Upon entering Ervington High in 1966, we Seniors have been under the careful direction of Mr. Lockhart and his well advised associates. Thus, at this time we wish to express our deepest and most gracious appreciation. Mr. Lockhart, thank you! Guidance and Counseling Mrs. Billie K. Crum began her career as a teacher at Ervinton High upon the completion of the new building in 1955. At that time, she was engaged in teaching sci- ence, chemistry, and English. In intervening years, be- tween 1958 and 1966, she held various positions in the other county schools. Upon her return in 1966, she be- came involved in the field of guidance and resumed her next position as a teacher. Mrs. Crum was also one of the three advisors who guided us Seniors from our eighth grade flight to our present sta- tus. So, to you, Mrs. Crum, our thanks for your five years of understanding and guidance. Being chosen teacher of the year by the class of ' 71 was a genuine surprise to me. As you know, I have often disagreed with you, both as a class and as individuals, but I would like to be- lieve that these disagreements have been eye-openers to both you and me. In these encounters you and I have developed a character- istic called perseverance. This characteristic, which will cause you to stick with what you start, will be one of the most worth- while things you can learn — in school or out. Without it you will be known as a quitter, and if you let yourself be labeled that way then you can say farewell to your self respect. Then what? But this and much more you will learn. And this learning that you will do will bring you to new decisions, or, if you wish, a choice of doors. Behind these doors will be the consequences of your decisions. Weigh carefully all aspects of the problem, inclu- ding personal responsibility and consequences, and then, using all of the perseverance at your command, and the boldness that comes as a result of having made a decision, open those doors. Open those doors and continue opening doors as long as you live. Your life will be what YOU make it. If I can be a help to you when you are reaching these decis- ions or when you are carrying them out, please feel free to ask. This honor that you have paid me has put me in your debt. Maybe I can begin to repay that debt by wishing you a little ambition, more luck and a great amount of- perseverance . Teachers of To the graduating class of 1971, I express my gratitude for being selected teacher of the year. I hope that your vote of confidence is a result of something I might have said or done which will benefit you when you leave Ervinton High School and establish a place for yourself in this complex soci ety in which we live. You are very fortunate to be young at a time when there is much emphasis on youth and youth ' s ideas. Young people all over the world are expressing themselves. They are be- coming concerned with and involved in solutions to world problems. I feel that you people have much to offer toward solving these problems and I sincerely hope that we, the teachers and staff of Ervinton High School, have, in some way, helped to prepare you for what lies ahead. Today, we hear a great deal about peace, freedom, and love of fellowman from people, who in reality, hate, are violent, and inconsiderate of practically everyone. Graduates! Let me urge ample of peace, freedom, and love of fellowman. If you remember nothing else from your five years at Ervinton High School, re- member that expression of kindness and consideration for your fellow human being are two necessary assets for a happy and successful life. I feel a particular attachment to this class perhaps be- cause it was my first one and I shall miss all of you. Feel free to call on me if I can be of any help to you in the future. the Year Best wishes for success and happir FACULTY MR. H. A. ARRINGTON B.S., E.T.S.U. Geography MRS. BILLIE CRUM B.S., E.T.S.U. Although our record was not great, we feel we had a successful season. Our offense which was more feared this year due to a balanced running and passing attack put Gulley, Sutherland, and Fields in the upper sections of the statistics race. Our defense, which never yielded more than 28 points a game, also yielded some fine players. L. C. Counts made All-District defensive tackle and Glennis Rose was feared as a defensive end. The rest of the defensive team constantly sided in punishing opposing teams. Jackie Phipps Hansel Fleming Gene Rose The above coaches of E.H.
