JONNIE ' DEEL MEMORIAL LIBRARY CUNTWOOD, VIRGINIA a} , ftfavuij y L SuddltJ ' {2 z ?t7 5 , vS ©he Senior ©lass of ffirbinton i|tgh J thool !Ntira, Binjinta presents 68 |Ittmeer i Jfnri ' huirb Our annual has at last been completed, and we are very proud of our efforts. The annual staff has worked hard and long on it, but we have learned much and have enjoyed the work. Even if we became discouraged at times, we have tried to make the annual a success. We, the annual staff, hope that all of you enjoy reading it and that it may serve in years to come as a happy reminder of the 1967-68 school year. As you browse through the book in later years, we hope that it will make you smile and recall ‘‘the good old days at Ervinton High.” Many people have contributed to the production of this annual, and I, as editor, would like to first recognize the helpfulness of the annual staff. They have worked well together; I don’t believe I could have had a more cooperative staff. I would like to thank Mr. Mullins, our advisor, for the assistance he has given us. We certainly could not have done the work without him. Next, I would like to thank the seniors who helped sell the advertisements and the many businesses and individuals who bought ads. It is to these people, whose monetary contributions have made this annual possible, that we perhaps owe our greatest debt of gratitude. I am also grateful to Mr. Smith for the help and consideration he has shown us. Both he and the members of the Board of Education took time out to com- pose a message for us to read and remember in later years. 2 68 Content (little |Jage jSniphimuires JPureUmrit Jireshnten (fnntents 3untnr 2|igh Behtrathm Jiaborites Aimtinistratton Athletics Jliarultg ©rgamsatinns Seniors Acthiities d uninrs Ahliertisers Beiutctturn (to It seems as though it were only a few short years ago when I used to look forward to a bedtime story and a chance to lick the cake bowl. But the years flew by and new things filled my desires . . . clothes, the use of the family car, dates, and MONEY. Yes, and you, Mom and Dad, were the ones who always shared these things with me. ' You laughed when I laughed; cried when I cried. You knew and understood that all these things were just a part of my growing stage. And so, Mom and Dad, I offer this dedication to you to express my appreciation for all the loving memories of your trust, confidence, wisdom, understanding, friendship, and love you have given me through these years. 4 ministration To the Class of 1968: During your years at E. H. S. you have experienced many types of learning experiences; in the classroom, through club participation, on the athletic field and in social contacts with other students and faculty members. As you experience the challenges of the age of automation and space travel, it is my sincere wish that you will find that your learning experiences at E. H. S. will be beneficial. Graduation is only the start of success; your success will be determined by your ability to recognize and take advantage of those opportunities which face you each day. Accept the responsibilities that are now yours to make the United States the greatest Free Democratic country of the world. My sincere wishes for success goes to each of you. Kenneth Smith Principal 6 ($«r Assistant principal FARRELL C. SUTHERLAND B.S., Emory Henry Plane and Solid Geometry Advanced Algebra I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the class of 1968 on their successful completion of the requirements for graduation from Ervinton High School. As your assistant principal, I have enjoyed working with each of you. I hope that you realize that your high school graduation is only a pause in your education and not the end of it. I can only hope that each of you has gained a good enough background on which to build a most successful future. I hope that each of you will realize the ambitions that you have developed here at Ervinton High School and may you put your trust in God and strive to be trustworthy men and women. 7 ($ur (Snribante CounseUirs JESS LOCKHART B.S., E.T.S.U. The offence was led by Quarterbacks Nicky Lambert and Carol Green with Curtis McCoy leading in yardage gained. The defence sparked by James Holbrooks and the backing of a fairly good group of other linemen and with a pretty fair group for pass protection. Ervinton faced tough competition in the Lonesome Pine District, one of Southwest Virginia ' s toughest districts. We may not have won too many games but the opposing teams knew they had been played. We still had good hustle and spirit nearing the end of the season. We went into each game as if it were at the beginning of the season. We offer our thanks to the coaches, Jackie Phipps and Mancil Laforce, who have showed a real interest in the football squad. The goal of FHA members is to help individuals improve personal, family and community living. To guide their activ- ities toward this goal, the Ervinton FHA Chapter chose this year the national pro- jects Citizenship Challenges You and Neighbors Near and Far . Some of the activities done by the club at meetings are a buzz session on Why Being a Good Citizen is Important , a guest speaker on Phases of Good Citizenship , a film and a skit by various members. Smith To start wherever I chance to be, With an open road and a foot that ' s free; To follow through to a chosen goal, With independence and strength of soul; To lend a hand to the needy earth. And ask no more than its work is worth; To dream and try, aspire and pray -- That ' s what I call the American Way. To play my role with a heart that sings, To know the richness of simple things; To feel I ' ve paid for what I ' ve won, In the honest coin of duty done ; To seek the weal of our brotherhood, And share in the larger common good; To keep the faith with my race and day -- That ' s what I call the American Way. To earn my portion, to spend and give, To believe in God -- find it good to live -- To have good neighbors -- and be one, too -- To be a patriot through and through; To mingle moments of work and rest, To love my family and fireside best; To do my thinking and have my say -- That ' s what I call the American Way. 85 CHARLES RHEA ANTHONY YATES RALPH MOCK 86 8:30 p.m. 12:30 - Government Education By diffusion 2:30 p.m. 12:30 - Biology 3:00 p.m. 3:01 p.m. Move over boys, here comes dad! 89 Oh !
