Ervin's happenings are bringing in noth- ing but RAVE notices from those who are in the know . . . Speaking of people in the know, Mr. Katz and Mr. Freed are in Te1etype's spotlight. Ervin's Principal and Vice-Principal are to be applauded for their outstanding performances in The Enforcers . This column is predicting some really great repeat performances. This year's Student Council president, Marty Magana, was Head and Shoulders above our expectations. No, he's not a victim of dandruff. ln his ovm capable way, he exercised his power in a demo- cratic way, he was able to listen to both sides of many issues and evaluate the cir- cumstances before making decisions . He led, rather than pushed, the Student Coun- cil members into decisions. just think, he's not even backed by Peanut Power! Every person has the right to a trial by jury. Mrs. Bobbie Tetley has taken this to heart -- in fact, into the heart of her classroom. Her eighth grade Civics classes conducted mock trials with stu- dents researching actual case histories and presenting their trials before guest audiences. Mrs. Tetley gets our vote for initiative . GALS was among the up and coming organizations of this past school year. The members were ever busy participat- ing in sports and various activities. One of the busiest GALS around was one of their sponsors, Ms. Cathy Brown. What with co-coaching basketball for the girls' team, co-sponsoring GALS, co-sponsor- ing Jr. Forensics, directing the Spring Play and supporting other activities, Ms . Brown was buzzin' around. It is rumored that Ervin has secretly acquired a Little Theater somewhere in the building. The numbers 21 and 22 have been whispered in the halls . . . And BJHS2Teletype speaking of halls, has anyone else noticed that being in the traffic of Ervin's hal- lowed halls is like being in a roller derby at Skateland? lntercambio became a well-knovvn word this year at Ervin as we welcomed two foreign exchange students. Spending their summer vacations here were Mabel Ra- mos from San Salvador, El Salvador, and Marcella Curadra from Managua, Nicara- gua. Their two hosting sisters from Ervin were Dana Gordon and Diane Walk- er, respectively. I-lermanas, hermanas, nunca estaban tal hermanas dedicarse. Congratulations are due to three Ervin students who excelled in contests outside the circle of Ervin's influence. SUE RAT- LIFF, a seventh grader, won First Place in the intermediate division of the state NEA's My America Contest with her poem, Do They Remember Us'? Her poem then went on to win Honorable Men- tion in the intermediate division of the na- tional NEA Contest and was awarded 5100.00 for her efforts. This year she was the accompanist for the ninth grade mixed ensemble, was one of the accompa- nists for the spring play and the pianist for her church, The Blue Ridge Baptist Temple. Not only is Ruth greatly involved in music but one of her short stories won First Place in Ervin's Creative Writing Contest. One might say Ruth Ann has the keys to success -- at least 88 of them. Our own JEFF MURRELL, ninth grader, won First Place at the Optimists District Oratorical Contest in january. Jeff's win- ning essay was titled, Together We Will Decrease Our Chances of Becoming a Crime Statistic. Would we be too opti- mistic if we predict a successful future for jeff? . . . The talent in our school is absolutely amazing. We all deserve rec- ognition. Honestly . . .
