CLASS HISTORY COLORS: Red and Blue. FLOWER: Red Rose. MOTTO: With the ropes of the past, we will ring the bells of the future. After eight years of hard work, fifteen Green Fres-hies entered E. H. S. on September 1, 1944. At the beginning of our first year we elected Gene Moore, President, Richard Ridenour, Vice-President, and Mary Katherine Ford, Secretary- Treasurer. Mrs. Marsh was our sponsor. During the year four students were added to the class. They were Paul Moore, Bill Myers, Robert Horn, and Betty White. Robert Dropped out before the end of the year. During the summer Harvey Bartley, Paul Moore and David Wolf left the class, which left fifteen members to start our Sophomore year. Carl Cody entered in the fall. Arley Tow took over as President, with Howard Featherstone, Vice-President, and Jeanne Louthain, Secretary-Treasurer. Mary Kay Ford was chosen as Representative for C. S. A. Our sponsor was Mrs. Hollingsworth. To raise money for our dream of a trip, We as- sumed the sponsorship of ice cream and candy sales. For our social events, We had a hay-ride and a supper at the school house. In our Junior year Gene Moore served as President, Howard Feath- erstone as Vice-President, and Ruth Ann Clingenpeel as Secretary-Treas- urer. Our C. S. A. Representative was Jeanne Louthain. Mrs. Hollings- worth led as our sponsor again. We sold candy the first semester. Mr. Nash took the responsibility of directing our successful attempt of a class play, namely, Cyclone Sally. We took the Seniors to Indianapolis to see Frankie Carle and his orchestra for our Junior and Senior Reception. On August 29, 1947, we began to see our long, hoped-for goal. It was our last year at Ervin. Gene Moore took the President's position for the third year. Howard Featherstone was elected Vice-President, Ruth Ann Clingenpeel, Treasurer, and Mary Kay Ford, Secretary. Arley Tow and Jeanne Louthain represented the Seniors on the Student Council. Mr. Bray carried the sponsorship of our class on his shoulders this year. Af- ter three years of hoping for a trip, it was finally decided that our wishes would be fulfilled. The Juniors and Seniors combined for the trip and went to Cleveland, Niagara Falls, and Detroit. Our Senior Play, Here Comes Charlie, was given after a lot of work and fun, mostly fun. Mr. Bray directed it. Those who attended Ervin twelve years are as follows: Gene Moore, Howard Featherstone, Jeanne Louthain, Mary Fisher, Lyndal Wilson, Wayne Martin, and Richard Ridenour, After Weeks of hard work, especially during the illness of Miss Daes, we succeeded in publishing the Echo of '48, Then came May 5, 1948, the day the Seniors and the teachers had been waiting for. We received our diplomas and bade farewell to dear old ERVIN HIGH, ringing the bells of the future. SENIORS OF ERVIN SCHOOL Signed, published, and declared by the above-named Seniors of Ervin High School, as and for their last Will and Testament, in the presence of us and each of us, who, in their presence and at their request, and in the presence of one another, have hereunto subscribed our names as Wit- nesses on the day and in the year above written. SENIOR CLASS POEM Of all the schools we know of, Old Ervin is the best. They talk of other high schools, But we'll give them a rest. In this good old high school, We give each class a boost, But there is one in high school That puts others on the roost. Toward success he is always bent, With a firm and steady hand, For to tell the truth about it- We've got others beat by far. Gene has served as president, With dreams that are lofty and grand Howard with his happy days, Is full of go and pep, And when there's work that must be done He certainly makes it step. Mary Kay is such a dainty lass, She dresses, O, so neat, She's the Secretary of the classg We know she can't be beat. Ruth Ann is our money bank. She takes in all the dough, And always has her lessons well. She's full of life and go. Mary is a jolly girl. She always wears a smile. She's always pushing ahead And making time worth while. Ruth, you will always know, By her giggles, full of cheer, In spirits you never find her low, We're glad she's been with us here. Jeanne is always in for fun, - She usually finds it, too, But still she gets her lessons done, And to Ervin she's been true. Wayne certainly is a joke, He is full of fun and pep, Although sometimes the rules he broke, In typing he's right in step. Bill, who has the gift of gab, Is with us to the last, But now he ends his high school days With memories of the past. Norma has pushed ahead And still is on her way. Though classmates walk with Weary tread She's with us to this day. We think it is not necessary To tell you who we are, David sure can drive a Ford, He's in it every night. Dick, as Richard is better known, Folks run with all their might. When he comes tearing down the road, A jolly good fellow is he. I'm sure that some day when he's grown, A great success he will be. ArIey's mischievous eyes and grin Will tell you he's full of fun, Smiling at girls he thinks is no sin, So long as his lessons are done. Betty is a quiet lass And doesn't have much to say. She always has her lessons well, By working hard each day. Lyndal is here at last With bright and happy looks, When thinking of the days gone by V Or reading comic books. And so we bid farewell tonight, Teachers, schoolmates, friends, and all Success sends out her glowing light, The future beckons us with a call, PROPHECY OF THE CLASS OF '48 On this beautiful June Day of 1960, the former pupils of Miss Smith and Miss Daes gather here at the Grass Creek Evangelical United Breth- ren Church to witness their double wedding. As the time for the ceremony nears, Mr. Wayne Martin, the celebrat- ed concert pianist, seats himself at the piano. Mr. Martin's mother-in- law, Mrs. Lineback, first got him intrested in music. Mr. Arley Tow, noted Metropolitan tenor, is now taking his place beside the piano. His first selection is Always After Dave Price graduated, he went to Purdue and took up garden- ing. He specializes in Bachelor's Buttons, with which he beautifully decorated this church. It is now time for the Processional and Wayne very graciously be- gins Mende1ssohn's Wedding March. The smiling grooms are preceded by the Reverend Lyndal Wilson. Lyndal took up the ministry when Su- sanne refused himg after that, even Sam's Pool Room didn't mean any- thing to him. The bridesmaids and maids of honor are taking their places, and now coming down the aisle are the two flower girls, preceded by the four ring bearers. Making their entrance now are the two brides, they are escorted by their fathers, who will give them in marriage. Following each bride are the train bearers. The flower girls, ring bearers, and the train bear- ers are the children of Mr. and Mrs. William Allen. Mrs. Allen is the former Jeanne Louthain. Jeanne is a practical home-maker and Bill pol- ishes marbles in the marble factory. Phe brides' gowns were designed by Howard Featherstone. He first learned of his ability while doodling in Government class. Now as the ceremony ends, we look around us and see several of the other '48 graduates. First of all, we see Ruth Ann Clingenpeel, who ran for Governor of Indiana in '52, but because of her age, was defeated. We hear that she is getting to be quite a politician. Richard Ridenour and his wife and family are living in Ervin Town- ship on the home place. Well, well! What a surprise. I believe that is Bill Myers walking ahead of me. The last I heard, he was touring the world to see which country has the most beautiful women. We noticed that Mr. and Mrs. Dick Gilbert came in late because they had to fly from St. Louis where Dick is playing with the Browns. Mrs. Gilbert is the former Mary Kay Ford. - Betty White and Ruth Henry are old maids. They give advice to the lovelorn in their very popular magazine, Kiss and Make Up. ' Mary Fisher married Stanley Mynarski soon after she graduated. Her sister-in-law, Norma, owns the Geometric Corset Company, for which Mary designs the corsets. Gene Moore is the last of the guests to greet the brides. He is still looking for the refined girl. It brings back memories to see all of these graduates of '48 again as we-ll as the teachers. Act II--About a week later. Dusk. Act III-A week later-late afternoon. The curtain is closed to denote a lapse of one-half hour. Jack Webster, owner of the Webster Estate, returns home after a long absence with the purpose of marrying Sue Bascum. Immediately upon his arrival he encounters open defiance at the hands of some human whirlwind, who is known as Cyclone Sally. Over one half million Americans have enjoyed this comedy to date. Mrs. Sites, Mrs. Kerkhoif, Mrs. Diller, Mrs Tow, Mrs. Brower, CAFETERIA Our school cafeteria was put into operation January 15, 1948. It has served an average of two hundred hot lunches per day since that time. Mrs. Kerkhoff, the head cook, is assisted each day by three patrons of Ervin School. The school wishes to take this opportunity to express its appreciation for the wonderful hot lunches that have been served. SENIOR PLAY--CLASS OF 1948 HERE COMES CHARLIE Larry Elliott, young' broker, thinking he is becoming guardian of a small boy, is j olted to find he has taken a girl to raise, seventeen and pretty. Charlotte is called Charlie. Larry is engaged to the imperious Vivian Smythe-Kersey and is further hen-ridden by a snobbish aunt. Charlie arrives from Arkansas accompanied by Uncle Aleck Twiggs, a true product of the Czarks. Farcial situations develop from the social blunders of the new arrivals, especially when Aunt Fanny Farnham, determined to make Uncle Aleck earn his board and keep, tries to turn him into a society but- ler. Larry's position is made so uncomfortable that, to save his punish- ment, the pair depart, only to return after some months, oh, so different! Charlie is barely recognizable in her successor, the glorious Charlotte, who fiutters all masculine hearts. Minor roles include: Larry's cynical college pal, a haughty society matron, her sappy son, a comical Irish maid, and her Irish policeman fiance. VARSITY BASKETBALL RESULTS As we opened our 1947-48 hardwood season it seemed as though our far distant friend Lady Luck, had completely forgotten us. We start- ed out Saturday night, November 1, in a nervous battle with New London at the Russiaville gym. We sadly bowed and continued to bow through- out the rest of our scheduled season, including our invitational tourney. But, in our county tournament we got revenge on New London by a 41 to 39 edge and went into the semi-finals, only to be defeated by the How- ard Hornets, who finished as the champs. Then the Kokomo sectional time rolled near. Our Eagles opened the sectional, which took place at the Elwood gymnasium, with a 48-47 victory over the Union Cardinals in what was considered the most exciting and best all-'round contest of all five sessions of the three-day run. This was about the biggest upset all Howard County has seen this season. Next, we gave in to the annual sectional favorites, the Kokomo Wildcats, and once again a few of our tougher athletes bade goodbye to their high school net careers. The senior boys all had some connection with basketball in one way or another. Five were players: Wayne Martin, Gene Moore, Bill Myers, Richard Ridenour, and Lyndal Wilson. A sixth, David Price, was out for basketball the last semester and became one of us. The two remain- ing were Howard Featherstone and Arley Tow. Howard was our student manager once again, and Butch, along with Jeanne Louthain, became our cheer leaders. We would like to express our appreciation to the Ervin basketball fans who constantly backed us, even though we were taking defeat more often than were we reigning victorious. Also, we would like to wish all the luck possible to next year's team in their on-coming season. SECOND TEAM Front row: Bill Young, Student Managerg Gerald Waldron, David Mason, Frank Wilson, Robert Lawson, Benny Clingenpeel, Elmer Byers. Second row: Ivan Skiles, Archie Robertson, Rudolph Schroeter, Richard Fouts, Joe Mason, Danny Waldron, David Price. We were very proud of our Seconds this year as they won 12 out of a possible 16 games. As luck would have it, all four defeats were from teams within the county. But, upon their second meeting with each of the four they came through and really took 'em. After such luck they still held on for a third-place rating in the coun- ty Reserve standings. First place went to Union and Howard Township grabbed second position. Here's hoping they'll make EHS ai tough, future ball-club, and right soon now, too. The Eagles were very successful in their 1947 baseball season as they were rated second in the Howard County Conference, with Greentown holding first place. We lost our first game to Greentown by one point and nearly made it as we pushed a four-run rally in the final inning of the game. The rest of the season we had smooth sailing, but we had to put on some hard last-minute drives to get the winning runs. After our first and only loss we presented the fans and coach with seven consecutive vic- tories. The Eagles began to hit the road for the 1947 track season as early as the March weather permitted. We started our season with a friendly triangle meet with two county teams, Howard and Clay, on the Hornets' home field. Next, We Went to Galveston for a practice meet and came home victorious, as before. Then came the Howard County annual meet for 1947. W. Bray 70 Zffze Glafu of '48 The 1948 Ervin Township School Yearbook Echo', has an un- usual history. The Echo Staff and Wayne Bray, sponsor, contracted with The Hathaway Printery at Coatesville, Ind., for the printing of the yearbook. The entire copy was delivered in perfect condition to the printer in February, 1948, and the annuals were to be delivered by April. But the printer nor the staff could not know that one of the worst catastrophies in the history of Indiana would strike the little town of Coatesville before the annual could be completed. The Hathaway Printery building was demolished in the tornado which struck Coatesville on Good Friday, March 26, and completely de- stroyed much of the town. When the storm struck, Mr. Hathaway and his son, Rex, were working on The Echo, when the electric cur- rent went off. Both went outside the building to see what was mak- ing it so dark. They were still outside when the tornado struck and escaped with only minor injuries. On Easter Sunday, Mr. Bray came to Coatesville to see whether or not Ervin School would have an annual. He and Mr. Hathaway salvaged most of the copy out of the debris. The greater part of the annual had been set in type and was found where it had been stored. The halftones which had been received from the engravers had not been unwrapped and therefore escaped damage. These were all turned over to the class so that another printer could be secured to publish the annual. However, the class voted to wait until The Hath- away Printery could rebuild and get back into business again and then publish the annual. The Printery was back in business in a new location by August, but it took many weeks to get the equip- ment in first class condition to print the annual. After almost a year of delay The Echo comes to you, not only as a yearbook of precious school memories, but also as a souvenir from Coatesville, the tornado town. The Hathaway Printery is indeed grateful to the Class of '48 and Mr. Bray for your patience and consideration during these long months of waiting for the yearbook. We thank you for your cour- tesy and send Best Wishes to the Class of '48. 7fxe Jfaifzawaq fjzin-img Harmon H. Hathaway, Proprietor 41 :gy , A, Jr? xi. . I5 4 1' r nf' - 4 - :X k - .
