College Opens 149th Year After unloading all their worldly possessions in their respective dorms, Erskine students gathered at Belk Hall to weave through the registration line. Here, students greeted their professors and friends and filled out endless forms. The Financial Aid Office needed proof of identity, while other campus and non-campus organizations offered goods and services at little or no cost. From Belk students travelled to the book store to stand in yet another line. Yes, the school year had begun. The Formal Opening of the College was held during convocation on Wednesday, September 9. The faculty donned their academic regalia and joined in procession. Rev. Bell, Moderator of the General Synod of the A.R. Presbyterian Church, spoke to the students on priorities. Freshmen Begin A New Life The freshmen arrived at Erskine on August 31 to begin their years here. The members of the SCA Cabinet were on hand to carry, to tote, and to unpack the boxes and boxes of freshman belongings. No sooner were the freshmen unpacked than they were whisked off to meeting after meeting. Eventually, the freshmen and their parents were reunited at Grampian Hill for a reception hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Ezell. They enjoyed the last few moments with their parents while mingling with the other new faces at Erskine. After the parents left for home, the freshmen were alone to adjust to their new lives. With no time to rest, each one dressed for the soiree. As they began making lasting friendships, they enjoyed the meal and dance sponsored by the SCA. The next few days were filled with the freshman follies, the traditional Signing of the Book for the women, and dozens of meetings. However, the freshmen soon had to give up the special attention and settle into their new lives at Erskine. Getting help from some SCA Cabinet members, Susan Linderman unpacks her many belongings at Carnegie. Taking the pledge of an Erskine woman, the freshmen and senior leaders participate in the Signing of the Book ceremony. Freshmen 9
