Erskine College Due West, South Carolina 29639 Volume 69 Title 1 The Towers are a symbol of Erskine tradition. Capt. The more things change, the more they stay the same. The more things stay the same, the more they change. It seems like every week we, as students, are pounded with changes that may affect the rest of our lives. These changes on the outside make profound changes inside us as well. As members of the Erskine family, we all open ourselves to other people—friends, professors, even - our parents. That opening creates in every Erskine student the ability to change. Through conversations at the dinner table, on the swing at the circle, or in our classrooms, everyone is affected by the ideas and dreams of others. Although the inward and outward changes seem radical at times, the founding principles of the College remain the same. It seems that only the faces change; that the tradition remains constant. Yet the tradition changes all of us, and when we leave Due West, we are stronger for the changes we have experienced. The tradition will remain with each one of us as each one of us makes his mark on Erskine. The faces may change, but the tradition of excellence, quality and perseverance remains in each one of us as well as in Erskine. Tammy Garrett and her teammates show excitement after scoring a point against Coker. Claire Donnelly and Kim Kellison pause after the Signing of the Book reception sponsored by the Philo Women and Chi Little Sisters. Kent Stone and Linda Sherer enjoy food and fellowship at the Tri Beta cookout. Opening 3 Dedication 1988 When Dot Carter first arrived in Due West, little did she realize that she would have such a great effect on so many students over the next twenty years. Beginning in 1967, Dot was introduced to the Erskine family as secretary to the Admissions Office, then headed by Bill Lesesne. Her former boss remarked that “one of her best attributes is her genuine caring for students and their parents.”’ She upholds the Erskine tradition of caring and excellence. After taking time off to raise a family, Dot returned to Erskine to head the Financial Aid Office. Through her expertise and commitment, Dot has enabled students to attend Erskine. The students aren't the only ones to recognize and appreciate Dot’s hard work. Respected in both regional and national financial aid organizations, Dot was elected last year as president of the South Carolina Association of Financial Aid Directors. Dot’s caring for people extends to other areas of her life as well. ‘‘Miss Dot” teaches the two-year-old Sunday School class at the Due West A.R.P. Church. Her pupils as well as her friends love her smile and encouraging words, which she shares freely. Dot is married to Tracy Carter, principal of Dixie High School. The Carters have two children, Shannon and 1; Dot Carter is one of the faces that help Erskine excel. Because of her commitment to Erskine, its ideals and its students, we proudly dedicate the 1988 Arrow to Dorothy Jamison Carter. Dot Carter keeps busy with phone calls from incoming students. The members of the SCA Cabinet were on hand to carry, to tote, and to unpack the boxes and boxes of freshman belongings. No sooner were the freshmen unpacked than they were whisked off to meeting after meeting. Eventually, the freshmen and their parents were reunited at Grampian Hill for a reception hosted by Dr. and Mrs. Ezell. They enjoyed the last few moments with their parents while mingling with the other new faces at Erskine. After the parents left for home, the freshmen were alone to adjust to their new lives. With no time to rest, each one dressed for the soiree. As they began making lasting friendships, they enjoyed the meal and dance sponsored by the SCA. The next few days were filled with the freshman follies, the traditional Signing of the Book for the women, and dozens of meetings. However, the freshmen soon had to give up the special attention and settle into their new lives at Erskine. Getting help from some SCA Cabinet members, Susan Linderman unpacks her many belongings at Carnegie. Taking the pledge of an Erskine woman, the freshmen and senior leaders participate in the Signing of the Book ceremony. Freshmen 9 College Opens 149th Year After unloading all their worldly possessions in their respective dorms, Erskine students gathered at Belk Hall to weave through the registration line. Here, students greeted their professors and friends and filled out endless forms. The Financial Aid Office needed proof of identity, while other campus and non-campus organizations offered goods and services at little or no cost. From Belk students travelled to the book store to stand in yet another line. Yes, the school year had begun. The Formal Opening of the College was held during convocation on Wednesday, September 9. The faculty donned their academic regalia and joined in procession. Rev. Bell, Moderator of the General Synod of the A.R. Presbyterian Church, spoke to the students on priorities. Formally and informally, the college opened its doors to old and new faces alike. re ¥ royr sen be sone ee ee ee oe et : . The men’s soccer team welcomed Ricky Wright as coach, while Brett Teach assumed coaching duties for the women’s team. Also, the Lady Fleet volleyball team greeted Gid Alston as head coach. Through this time of transition and new faces, the Fleet continued the tradition of producing highly competitive teams. Intramurals gave all students the opportunity to participate in sports. Under the direction of Mike Fogarty, the intramural program took on new excitement in the fall of 1987. The competition between halls promoted hall unity and spirit as well as provided a much needed outlet from studying. R-II runs offense in an intramural game. Each class, as well as various campus organizations, gathered on the intramural field to work on floats for the Homecoming Parade. Early in the evening, the cheerleaders hosted a pep rally and bonfire to boost Erskine spirit. The evening ended with a fireworks display, although float building continued into early Saturday morning. Sat urday morning brought no rain, as in years past, and the Homecoming Parade. Alumni, students, and faculty lined Main Street to watch the procession of Homecoming representatives. Taking first place in the float competition was the junior class, followed by the Philo men and women and the freshman class. Halftime activities during the men’s basketball game with Piedmont climaxed the weekend’s festivities. Halloween 23 Under the direction of Dr. Bruce Carlock, the Erskine Players presented an excellent production of Inherit the Wind by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee. Two sophomores, Amy Merrill and Rhonda Kay, assisted Dr. Carlock in directing. Port raying major characters were David Broshar as Matthew Harrison Brady, Allen McCarley as Henry Drummone, and Matt Fulton as Bertram Cates. The drama is based on the 1925 Scopes “monkey trials.” The trial pitted famous lawyers Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan against one another. Inherit the Wind follows the trial of Bertram Cates, who has been arrested for teaching evolution in his biology class in Hillsboro, Tennessee. BR ie oa Before the trial, Rachel Brown (Elizabeth Rogers) pleads with her boyfriend Bertram Cates (Matt Fulton) to give in to the town’s ideas. Drummone (Allen McCarley) argues with the mayor of Hillsboro (Jeff Osborne). Rev. Under the careful direction of dedicated professors, students improved their abilities in areas such as piano, organ, voice, and conducting. Their combination of hardwork and talent paid off in a number of successful recitals. The music department also provided extracurricular activities for students not majoring in music. Students could participate in the Wind Ensemble as well as the Mixed Chorus and Choraleers. Old hands at keeping Erskine students busy, Dr. Gettys directed a class on the Civil War while Dr. Nancy Erickson lectured on the socio-economic and political aspects of modern Russia. The department is characterized by a close relationship between the professors and students as evidenced by some of its activities. Under the History Department, Phi Alpha Theta was also active in bringing History majors and minors together with their annual History Bowl for area high schools. The department sponsored its annual fall and spring picnics for students of History. JAMES WYLIE GETTYS, JR. Bible, Religion and Philosophy Whether working on a Bible and Religion major or Philosophy minor or just completing general curriculum requirements, students labored under the supervision of Dr. Benjamin Farley, Dr. Margaret Cubine, Dr. Hans. Engler, and Professor Donald Bowling. In the words of Dr. Farley, students undertook the study of the Bible ‘‘in light of modern research, searching for ways to support faith in God, and ... the meaning of ethics.” With a little hard work and Divine Inspiration, these students made it through courses such as Advanced New Testament, Youth Ministry, Basic Christian Beliefs, and Ethics. Bible and Religion 41 Chemistry and Physics Atomic theory and structure, chemical formulas and equations, and the Periodic Chart became familiar additions to the vocabulary of Chemistry majors. Organic Chemistry was a popular course for the hard core chemistry student. Majors worked under the direction of professors Thomas, Beverly, Hanna, and Lowry. Physics also provided a challenge. General Physics covered such topics as kinetics, magnetism, and wave motion. Physics majors endured 28 hours of courses under the patient supervision of their mentor, Dr. Junkin. r Labs were an important feature in these two sciences. They provided students with the opportunity to see concepts in action. HOWARD EDWARD THOMAS (1976) Professor of Chemistry B.Sc., Ph.D., University of Bristol, England. Most overcame the initial shock, however, and got down to the business of learning. Under the direction of Mrs. Haldeman, Dr. Facey, and Dr. Gowan, students studied principles of human physiology, genetics, behavior, and ecology. Sophomores got a semester’s worth of information on Mendel and his studies in genetics. Molecular Biology and Cellular Physiology was the ultimate trial for the Biology major. Juniors taking ecology enjoyed a field trip to Charleston where they caught and ate their own shrimp. At the end of their years of study at Erskine, students made their first attempt to research a biological concept in their senior seminar. Biology 43 Foreign Language The Foreign Language Department welcomed a new face, Dr. Chad Helms, among their ranks. 1987 also saw the return of Dr. Betty Berrios. Students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree completed four semesters of a foreign language. Bachelor of Science candidates could also choose ¢ foreign language to complete their general curriculum requirements. Language majors went beyond the basics as they studied composition and literature in French, Spanish and German. LEE BURMAN GARCIA (1986) Associate Professor of Modern Languages B.A., Furman University; M.A., Ph.D., University of Tennessee. The department offered General Psychology or Sociology to fulfill the general curriculum requirement. Group Processes proved a popular course in which students learned about themselves and others through small group interactions. The Human Sxuality class was also a popular course although some students were disappointed to find out there really were no labs. “Besides academic theories and scholarly facts, our graduates learned much about interacting and communicating with people and with families, the influence of society on the individual, and research methods used in sociology,” according to Dr. Norrell. ay SS JOHN ROGER SHOWALTER (1974) JOANNA ELIZABETH MILLER NORRELL (1985) Professor of Psychology Assistant Professor of Sociology and Psychology B.S., Virginia Polytechnic Institute; M.S., Ph.D., Purdue University. _B.A., Furman University; M.S. Students worked on techniques and skills to teach and officiate such team sports as soccer, speedball, and flag football. Gymnastics proved an interesting course as majors went through the rigors of calisthenics, tumbling, and pyramid building. Those not majoring in Physical Education were still required to take four semesters of a physical activity. Students could be seen learning to swing a golf club, to dodge a racquetball, or to keep up with Sally Creel in her aerobics class. Ortiz, provided students with opportunities for challenge and excitement. Courses on basic and advanced levels offered instruction in such areas as military justice, war tactics, and first aid. Fall and spring rappelling trips and the SCUBA and backpacking interim course gave all students a chance to take advantage of programs offered by the department. In its attempt to prepare students for the future, the program emphasized the development of leadership skills. High points of the season included a 1-0 victory over Lander and a 3-2 win over College of Charleston, coached by former Fleet mentor Ralph Lundy. Erskine led UNC 1-0 until the final minutes of the game before losing 3-1. The Fleet defeated PC 6-1 in the first round of the district play-offs before falling to USC-S. The Fleet added two freshmen starters, sweeper back Semming Austin and midfielder Eugene Jackson. Other freshmen include Russ Riley and Thomas Faulds. Men's Soccer 99 Erskine Hosts National Tournament In a landmark season, the 1987 women’s soccer team pet. finished second in the nation in the NAIA, the highest 3 national finish ever attained by an Erskine team. The Lady Fleet was host for the first national tournament ever held at Erskine and was winner in one of the most exciting games ever played at the college. Erskine defeated the University of Puget Sound in the opening round of the Women’s Championships, winning the 90-minute game and four 10-minute overtimes. Paula Howker hit the winning penalty kick. Although the tired Lady Fleet dropped a 1-0 decision to Berry College for the national title, the game was not decided until Erskine missed a shot in the last ten seconds of the game. The loss closed a 14-5-1 season in which Erskine was ranked in the national top 10 all year. High mark of the season was a 1-0 win over Elon, who eliminated Erskine from the play-offs last season. Two Erskine players, sweeper Karrie Miller and striker Jeri Houston, made All-East. Five players made All- National Tournament: Karrie Miller, Jeri Houston, Paula Howker, Perita Shumate, and Kathryn Whitmire, who was named Most Valuable Defensive Player in the tournament. Leading scorers for the second straight season were Stacye Moore, with 15 goals and 8 assists, and Jeri Houston, with 13 goals and 6 assists. Paula Howker had 18 assists. Other members of the team included Mary Weems, Melissa Brandon, Melissa Langford, Lisa Maly, Colleen Tagner, Michelle Adamson, Anne Forrest Curran, Evie Kalisky, Kim Taylor, Stephanie Jenkins, and Tracy Magnus. The Fleet won their season opener against Piedmont, the Homecoming game in which Erskine scored over 100 points. Also, the team had strong showings against three Division One schools: Davidson, Furman, and East Tennessee State University. Over Christmas break the Fleet finished third in the fourth annual Catawba Tournament. With the entire 1986-87 squad returning for the season, experience was the key for the Fleet. The veteran squad included six seniors: co-captains Curt Collins and Weyling White, forwards Marcus Scott, Richard Porcher, and Mike Fogarty, and post Chris Wells. These seniors saw much playing time, four as starters. The remaining starter was junior forward Chip Sherer, a pure shooter. During the second half of the Homecoming game, a contest in which the Fleet scored over one hundred points, senior Chris Wells goes up to block a shot while Mark Ingle and Mike Fogarty set up to rebound. Led by senior tri-captains Dee Davis, Fran Miller, and Beth Watford, the Lady Fleet opened their season on November 24 with an unfortunate loss to Gardner-Webb. The first win of the season was over Columbia College. Next, the team played a series of NCAA teams before starting district play in January. In the first district game, the Lady Fleet made a strong showing against Limestone in overtime. Captains Fran Miller and Beth Watford led the team with double-figure scoring. Dee Davis, an aggressive guard, and junior Kim Moore, a strong offensive player, consistently added points per game. At guard seniors Melissa Brandon and Perita Shumate and freshman Christy Moore made strong defensive contributions. Showing much improvement, sophomore Donna Miller added depth as center. The 1987 season saw the addition of freshman guard Elena Furnari, a heady playmaker. After a two-year absence, senior Amanda Adams returned to the court at forward. Senior guard Lisa Maly, a long- range shooter, and sophomore guard Kari Line also saw playing time. In the Lady Fleet’s season opener, Fran Miller and Kim Moore go up hard for a rebound. The Erskine students were overwhelmed to have such a team on the football field. It began last spring in three games against this past year’s opponents— Coastal Carolina, Clemson, and Appalachian State. Junior Bob Elliot stated that “‘this year was a growing and enlightening year, but with commitment we should improve in the year to come.” This year’s team put much hard work into both the games and the practices, which lit up the back of Robinson Dormitory every night this fall. Before the Coastal Carolina game, football players Ronald Mattox, Steve Arsenault, Stacy Williams, Eric Pederson, and Tripp Jackson roast marshmallows at the pep rally on “Robinson Terraces.” On third down and short yardage, the EC offense lines up against a tough Coastal Carolina defense. The Erskine players await the results of the coin toss before they take the field against Clemson. Coach Dan Cobb hurriedly adjusts senior David Coyne’s pads so he can retake the field in the game against Clemson. In the first-ever girls’ cross country race, Lisa Maly, Vangie Smith, and Anne Forrest Curran lead the runners from Anderson and Wofford as they head to the finish line. Erskine runners Peter Rambo and Jeff Land are stride for stride as they race on a tough Warren Wilson course. eee meen ermme - Before the district tournament race held at Francis Marion College, the Erskine team gets some advice and words of encouragement from Coach Floyd White. Freshman Scott Adams does extensive stretching before the district race in order to avoid injury while running. 110 Cross Country The 1987-1988 cross country team had the best overall record in the team’s history. During the season, the team scored two impressive wins over larger colleges. On October 3, the team defended the title of winner of the Warren Wilson Invitational by defeating Warren Wilson, Gardner-Webb, and Anderson College. The team held their only home meet on October 30, when they hosted Wofford and Anderson College. The Fleet came close to sweeping the meet with a perfect score. Only one opponent was able to place in the top six finishers. Runners on the first women’s cross country team are Lisa Maly, Anne Forrest Curran, Vangie Smith, Kim Moore, and Martha Love. Comments Because you were part of the Erskine family this year, her tradition is a little different. You made your mark. Likewise, Erskine has touched your life. Her ideals have influenced you and I would like to express my appreciation to the student body, faculty, and staff for their support, especially to Mr. Dick Haldeman for his a assistance. Also, thanks to Ronald Wood and his your beliefs. Erskine’s tradition lies within Erskine people, Erskine faces. Although the faces here change from year to year, the tradition stays in her and in us. Strive to keep the tradition and high ideals alive in you. Ideals are like stars; you will not succeed in touching them with your hands, but like a seafaring man on the desert of waters, you choose them as your guides, and following them you reach your destiny. —Carl Schurz 148 Colophon photography staff for their hard work developing and printing pictures and to Margaret McGill for the excellent job keeping our books. My deepest appreciation goes to Mrs. Diane Crenshaw for her guidance as our advisor. A special thanks to Marcy Evans, Lynn McKinney, and Vivian GayLord who helped me pull the pieces together and kept me sane during the final countdown.
