Because, to us, he is one who symbolizes and upholds the consistent beauty and ideals of the Christian life, we dedicate our volume to Dr. Orr. 66 99 (ia) CAT Memories, vivid and half-forgotten cling about our college home. Much will be forgotten but we carry away a handful of precious dust: A matchless interspersion of intrigue and the practical, in a traditional _ setting, and giving far more than a picturesque memory to her sons and daughters. -We have obtained a recipe for living—we have caught a vision whose value is unspeakable. To the end that these ideals will be forever captured and forever ours we have created our yearbook. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Seniors-elect of ‘48, we began our march on a weary day in September, AA. Our eager buoyancy lasted only through orientation. With the ennui of the classroom assuaged and the enigma olf junior-sister week answered, we were undoubtedly a part of Erskine. We returned, in '45, a paragon class, revered and respected by our irate inferiors. Somewhat sobered at the honor, we delved more seriously i : ; Ye = for the major organizations, played serious basketball and began) chat earnest! Y T ing at pep rallies for the last time. We watched wit sridmen piled the Erskine victories. In bearing responsible much of us is hers. This “first impression changed as we grew to know Erskine better, to love her dearly, and eventually became a part of her. We suffered through Rat Week, helped the juniors pick cotton, and sponsored a school hay ride. From among US, Marty Black became beauty queen and two were cheerleaders. Older, wiser and more sophisticated, we returned, to greet old friends joyfully and to make new ones. We put the freshmen through their paces, danced around the Maypole, and became another link in the traditional Daisy Chain. Now, as juniors, we begin to realize the burden of responsibilities that will soon be ours. Through junior-sister week, we met the freshmen. Traditionally, we began to plan early for Junior-Senior, by sponsoring a very successful Halloween Carnival. We cheered our football team on, as they wound up that heart-warming , string of victories. And, on the deeper side: candlelight services, “Y' programs, Religious Emphasis week—all, have brought us, through the years, to an Tepe appreciation of the things for which Erskine stands, and an inward thrill fe} I joy at maa ing a part of her. os Officers Presidents—Cuariotre Borpvers, Birt BENNETT Vice-Presidents—Kirty THomas, Stoan Betts Secretaries—RosyeE McCarxia, Grorce LAUDERDALE Treasurers—Martua Burriss, Hazer Craic Sponsor—Mr. Mack Rosinson al 1945 4 . ‘ ANGELA ANDERSON ELSIE BALDWIN ARTHUR BLANCHETT SARA LYNN BOYCE EVERETT BRANDON MARTHA BURRISS IDALYN BALDWIN WILLIAM H. We were freshmen, the largest class in the history of Erskine. Ours was the place of honor at church parties, Dr. Grier's reception, and the soiree. Then rodents, we became, at the hands of the Sophomores—but only for a day. Soon we found ourselves part of the magnanimous heart of Erskine. In Dr. Orr's Sabbath School Class, and in chapel and evening watch, we came to know deep reverence. We, ever oppressed by parallel, became a part of Mrs. Pitt's midnight-oil tradition. From among our number came the beauty queen and live cheerleaders. Joyous reunions marked the beginning of that year in which we found our- selves revered and obeyed Sophomores. Again, we gave to the school its beauty I queen, and two runners-up, its home coming queen and five sponsors. We listened, enthralled, to the honey-toned serenaders; and became especially fond of the cracked records in Bruce's. We cheered a winning football team and, made the maroon and gold inseparably ours. 74 re = ‘S ig Z lary Lou WuiteswweEs, Gr -Presidents—lvor Patrick, Lee TEMPLETON idents—) Pres Vice easurer—Lxro Hiui Sponsor—Miss Epna Parkinson of 1946 Secretary-Treasurer—SALLy BurKE Secretary—Harotp Parrott dr Sophomore Class — SALLY BURKE REX CARTER HENRY CHAMBERS of 1946 77 JESSIE COLVIN ROBERT CONN SARA COVIN DAVID CRAIG DORIS CRAWFORD MAX CULP SARA CULP NEWMAN DAVIS ROBERT DAVIS DAVID DELANEY WALTER DICKSON ANNE DOUBERLY ARES EWART e LIAM FEDDER i , - = SIDNEY FRANK LEON GABLE HENRY GALPHIN FRANCES GARRISON FRITZ GIBSON REID GOODBAR JAMES GOODYEAR EUGENE GRIER FRANCIS GRIER NELSON GROOMS CHARLES GURNEY ELIZABETH GUTZKE THELMA HALL MAC HARRIS CHARLOTTE HAYES 78 Sophomore Class of 1948 HUGH HENRY ELLA MAE HICKMAN LESLIE HIGH JOHN HILL IO) ISIN L VIVIAN HOVIS BUSTER HUGGINS FRANK HUNT BARBARA HUNTER SUSAN INMAN JACK JENKINSON ERNEST JOHNSON CHLOTILDE LaBRUCE MARCELLENE LESLIE FRANCES LONG 79 DORIS LYNCH WILLIAM A. Our'early timidity was soon driven away, however, by the desire for com- panionship, and questions flew like volleys between these new disciples of the old Erskine spirit. Our soaring egos abruptly fell with the arrival of the sophomores. After the torturous, inevitable Rat Day, we emerged wiser for our humility, on guard for upperclassmen and ready to face any new challenge which college could fling to us. We participated in all the activities, accumulated our share of minors, worried over exams, were thrilled at the Home-coming festivities, and witnessed the revival of the Erskine spirit through the victorious football season. We contributed Leila Pursley and Tommy Daum, cheerleaders, and to the beauty section, Betty Jane Blackwell. We partook of Erskine’s warmth, friendliness, guidance, and protection. We absorbed some academic knowledge of the fine arts in pursuit of our education for tomorrow. But, our most profound lessons were in learning-to knew more fully the One upon whose words and commandments Erskine builds her foundations. With the unique honor of having the first twenty-one issues more extensively read than in any one preceding year, the Mirror was soon printing approximately 1,000 copies weekly. Editorial policies are designed to keep before readers the fact that Erskine is an A. R. P. college, founded to train men and women in Christian leadership. Financially, the Mirror was put on a sound, profitab le basis, due to the capable management of Stanley Bennett and George Polichek. Both balanced and unbalanced front page make-up styles were used, a style sheet was adopted, and a Mirror library was established. “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women, merely players.” REDE Re eey oulss. long practices .. . midnight oil . . . Scoring in every quarter the maroon-clad team rolled up a 27-0 victory over a fishting but outclassed Atlantic Christian eleven. It was Erskine’s game from start to finish, and the helpless Christians never threatened the Seceder goal. SepteEMBER 27—Anderson ERSKINE 19—ROLLINS 9 The Seceders surprised everyone In the south as they rolled up a decisive 19-9 victory over the strong Rollins Tars from Florida. Although outweighed some twenty pounds to the man the Fleet rolled up a 19-2 command lead at the half and were “Rabbit” Lowery intercepted a Rollins pass and raced sixty yards for one of the never headed by the big Florida team. The men from the “Old Hic kory” first quarter, but this was short lived as the Fleet rolled up State took a 14-0 command in the twenty points in the second and fourth periods. Ocroser 11—Anderson ERSKINE 0—PRESBYTERIAN 6 The Presbyterian Blue Stockings capitalized on a freak pass in the closing minutes of the final stanza to defeat Erskine, 6-0, and hand the Fleet her first loss of the season. The Seceders marched to the Hose one-yard stripe but gave the ball up on downs. Ocroser 18—Anderson ERSKINE 14-EASTERN CAROLINA 0 Rebounding from the 6-0 defeat by Presbyterian the Fleet rolled up her fourth victory over Eastern Carolina Teachers College by the tune of 14-0. Although there was no scoring in the first half the game was played in the Tar Heels’ territory. The Fleet got its second wind in the last quarter and scored fourteen points to earn the victory. Ocroser 25—Gastonia, N. C. ERSKINE 19—GUILFORD 0 Playing ona muddy Gastonia field the Fleet rolled up nineteen points in the last six minutes of play over a_ strong Guilford eleven. The encounter was played on a field that was covered from goal to goal with two inches of water. November !—Elon, N. C. ERSKINE 7—ELON 17 The Elon Christians proved too much for the Fleet and rolled up a 17-7 victory over the ARPs. The Fleet had to travel 300 miles for this one and then play before an Elon Home Coming. Novemser 8—Due West ERSKINE 26—STETSON 0 Old grads saw a jet-propelled Flying Fleet down a heavy Stetson eleven from DeLand, Florida, 26-0 on Home Coming Day. Erskine rolled up nineteen points in the first half and seven more in the third quarter. The mighty Erskine line held the Hatters for a minus rushing offense. Novemser 15—Newberry ERSKINE, 28—NEWBERRY 12 The Fleet spoiled the Newberry Home Coming, 28-12. This game was played on a field covered by an inch of water from goal to goal. Newberry spoiled Erskine’s home coming last year and the Fleet were out for sweet revenge and that’s just what they got. November 27—Anderson ERSKINE 20—WOFFORD 26 A crippled Fleet bowed to Sewell and Company from Wol- lord, 20-20 on Thanksgiving Day. The Fleet was leading 20-19, but a fumble in the closing minutes gave the Terriers the victory. THE SQUAD Ansley, Barron, Bennett, Blackston, Bolin, Bonds, Brown, Bryan, Carr, Corsi, Dawkins, Deer, Franza, Knight, Golding, Gorham, Hamilton, Harrel, High, Hipps, Hunter, Lowery, Muirhead, Myers, Neill, Oates, Parker, Pierce. i Football... 1947 The Erskine Flying Fleet enjoyed one of its best seasons in years in winning seven games while losing only three. Such strong teams as Rollins, Guilford, Stetson, and Tennessee State were met and defeated by the maroon- and gold-clad team. Coaches Johnny McMillan and Gene Alexander built from a team that did not win a game in 1946 and surprised sports fans throughout the South with their hard-fighting eleven. Coach Mc- Millan was awarded the honor ot being elected “The Coach ol the Year in South Carolina’, an honor which is cherished by all South Carolina coaches. SHELTON SITTON STRICKLAND, H. FRANZA, number 55; WOODRUFF, 53; SITTON 49; and DAWKINS 32; can also be seen. Erskine won, 26-0. SHELTON scores from the six-yard line against Stetson. Erskine players are GOLDING, 40; SITTON, 49; and HIGH, 47. CAPTAIN BILLY BRYAN, place-kicking spe- cialist, makes good another extra point. He made eighteen for the season. Other Fleet players visible are DEER, 29; MYERS, 48; and HIPPS, 30. Yes, it was complete and good for a touchdown. “RABBIT” LOWERY is about to catch the touchdown pass as WOODRUFF (58))2 looks on. Erskine deleated Atlantic Christian, 27-0. BASKETBALL ‘The Arrow goes to press before the basketball season gets well underway, but from the first games played the Fleet shows remarkable improvement over last year s squad. The team is handicapped again by lack of experience and height, but they do show speed and the will to win. Lettermen returning are John Lauricella, Bob McCoy, Wayne McCoy, Harold Prater, Henry Bonner, Billy Tinkler, and Bill Hood. Coaches McMillan and Alexander are doing a fine job in tutoring the Flying Fleet. 11 December 12.
