LITERARY if AIHLETIC COUNCIL PROJECT Early 1n September of 1950 the student body d8C1d9d that all proceeds from the Cm't1s Publlshmg Company Magazlne Campalgn would be turned over to the Student Athletlc Counc1l The purpose of transferr1ng the netted prof1t of 'S300 was to equlp and organlze a Physlcal Educatxon Athletlc and Recreatlonal program along wlth remodelllng and pamtlng the faClllt16S connected Wlth Athletlcs and Physlcal Educatlon In order to make th1S project a success the student body w1th the co operatlon of the faculty drew up the plans concernlng the renovatlons The much needed equlpment that was purchased was as follows two tumblmg mats a portable basketball pole goal stopwatch basketballs nets archery equlpment badmlnton equlpment volley ball soccer ball duffle bags and warm up jerseys In regard to the project It was generally agreed that the fac1l1t1es were not adequate to the type of program suggested by the State Department so after conferrxng wlth the faculty students and Mr Trask the Athletlc Counc1l declded to renovate the lockers and shower rooms The old wood working shop was reconstructed to provide two boys locker rooms and larger storage space was provided in the pump room. A g1rls locker room was provlded between the g1rls basement and the g1rls shower room Mr Trask and h1S carpenters con structed these major renovatlons Varlous members of the faculty such as Mr Blaney Mr Bean and Mr Sllva helped from time to tlme on th1s project When all constructlon work was complet ed arrangements were made to pamt the entlre plant The mam problem was to select colors that would l1ghten and at the same t1me blend together The students who make lmportant contrlbutlons to the palnt project were Ph1ll1p Russell Rlchard Douglass Robert Wade and James Han son Faculty members that a1ded 1n pa1nt 1ng were Mrs Sllva MISS Gerry Mr Bean and Mr S1lva Th1s much needed lmprovement 1n our gvmnaslum allows us more space for ath let1cs and Physlcal Educatlon It also makes better use of the exlstlng space 1n the gymnaslum basement I am sure that all the students of Erskme Academy whether or not they partlclpate 1n sports appreclate the work that has been put 1nto th1s partlcular pro ject to make Ersklne a larger and better equipped school.
