COMMANDER MEREDITH A. SMITH, USN Commander SMITH enlisted in the Navy In June, andw as commissioned through the Novy V-12 Training Program, attending Emorry, Princeton and Cornell universities. Since commissioning. Commander SMITH ' S duty assign- ments have included USS COMSTOCK LSD-19; USS SPRINGFIELD CL-66 ; USS PASADENA CL-65 ,- USS NEW JERSEY BB-62 ; Flag Lieutenant, Staff, Commander Cruiser Division THREE in HELENA CA-75 ,- USS BREMERTON CA-130 and USS QUINCY CA-71. At the end of the Korean Hostilities, he commanded U.S. Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Training Center, Jackson, Mississippi and later to duty under instruction in the Navy ' s prototype postgraduate line school. Duty follov ed in USS RICE COUNTY LST-1089; AOIC and later OIC Naval Communication Unit, New Orleans ; As Electronics Oflicer, U.S. Pacific Fleet Operational Control Center and OIC Joint Pacific On-Line Relay ; USS RENSHAW DD-499 ; duty under instruction, U.S. Marine Corps Schools, Quan- tico, Virginia, and then as commanding officer, USS ERNEST G. SMALL DDR- 838 until March of 1966. Commander SMITH is entitled to wear the following medals and cam- paign ribbons: Bronz Star Medal (Vietnam duty), American Theater, Asiatic- Pacific, WWII Victory, Navy Occupation, China Service, Service Defense, Korean Confiict (7 Stars), Navy-Marine Expeditionary Medal, United Nations Service, and Korean Presidential Unit Citation. In addition. Commander SMITH ' S record contains three letters of Commendation for performance of duty under hostile enemy fire and one for duty under extremely hazardous conditions. Commander SMITH is a native of Bentonia, Mississippi and is married to the former Naomi Fears of that city. The SMITH ' S have two [daughters, ages 9 and 1 1.

Prior to reporting to USS ERNEST G. SMALL, Commander GORMAN served for two years in the OPFice of the Secretary of Defense (International Security Affairs) and for one year in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations (Politico-Military Affairs Division). Born in New York City, he enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and was com- missioned an Ensign in 1946. He has served at sea in cruisers ; ALBANY, SPOKANE, and MACON and in Destroyers, HENDERSON and OZBOURN. Shore assignments have been as an instructor at the Naval Postgraduate Intelligence School and as Assistant Naval Attache in India. He is a graduate of Holy Cross College and holds a Master of Arts degree from Georgetown University. Commander GORMAN has also grad- uated from the Naval Postgraduate Intelligence School, the Naval Language School and the Armed Forces Staff College. Commander CORMAN is entitled to wear the Am erican Pacific, European Theater, WWII Victory, Korean Victory and Occupation Medals. He is married to the former Gail Chapman of Portsmouth, Ohio.
