Cliioqncqp lu, When the Adirondack Mountains are mentioned to I, Thomas Phalan, Principal of Technical High School, the sparkle that comes to his eyes and the light in his face make one instantly aware that the subject is dear to his heart and the reason is soon apparent. ' For it was in Boonville, N. Y., a small village nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks that Mr. Phalan spent his early and adventurous boyhood days. To hear Mr. Phalan relate stories of this region, so familiar to him, is always of interest to his many friends and acquaintances. Mr. Phalan received his elementary education in the Boonville elementary school and later graduated from the Utica Academy at Utica, N. Y. Upon graduation from the academy, Mr. Phalan entered the teaching profession serving for eight years in the capacity of teacher and principal in New York state rural schools. ln 1910 he entered the University of Michigan and during his senior year there served as assistant instructor in the field of physics. Upon receiving his bachelor of science degree in 1914 he served as acting professor of physics at Lake Forrest College, Lake Forrest, Ill., for a period of one year. He then returned to his native state of New York where he served two years with the state engineering staff working principally on the Erie Barge Canal. Mr. Phalan joined the teaching staff of the Erie public schools at mid- semester in 1917 as a teacher of physics at Central High School. His stay, however, was brief for during World War I he became assistant metallurgical engineer at the Erie Forge and Steel. At the end of the war period he rejoined the teaching staff at Central High and remained on Central's faculty until 1931 when he was promoted to the principalship of Roosevelt lunior High. ln 1939 he was transferred to the principalship of Technical High. Mr. Phalan has long been active in civic affairs and teachers' professional organizations. At present he is a member of the Lions Club, Torch Club, Press Club, and Chairman of the Eye Conservation Committee of the Lions Club. He is also a member of the Board of the International Institute. Among educational organizations he is listed as a member of the Erie Teachers Asso- ciation, Pennsylvania State Education Association, National Education Associa- tion, and the American Vocational Association.
