It was a team that should've gone farther than it did, but much to the disappointment of fans and early predictions, we wound up tied for the cellar. The Green and White line, being the heaviest and strongest in the city was a constant threat to opposing teams. This great forward wall consisted of many stars. Ol these, Captain Tony Pol, and his educated toe, caused quite a bit of commotion around town, and also meant the diflerence between winning or losing to Turtle Creelc and Vincent. l'le brolce the high school record by lciclcing 'IO out of a possible 1Q points. Johnny Porreca, the heaviest lad in scholastic football, along with the. rest of the lineman made a hit with the fans who lilced to see the opposition stopped and stay that way. But, let's not forget the all-important bacltfield. l-lere we saw a smooth working cloclc geared by Jim Cl2uggyD Ruggiero, Culver l-lall, Norb CMaggieQ Miazga, lony Starocci, and Phil Goofy Zuravlefi. Any combination of 4. . of the 5 boys mentioned, showed a mastery of fancy, intricate, and confusing plays. Ruggiero, a very versatile athlete, ended second in the city scoring with 36 points . Maggie, who with Ruggiero, could be called '4Mr. Speed, showed a limited but very impressive season. Culver l-lall was one of the best delensive baclcs seen in scholastic ball in a long time. Starocci and Zuravleff played commendable football throughout the season. Mention is due here to Frank Barbaro and lony DiNunzio the two second team Bulletmen Rich Wawr zynlalc Jaclt Malinoslci and Don Maxwell were reserve line stars ln conclusion we give lech s contributions to the Lion s Club Save An Eye Game Ray Barczalc Tony Pol Rich Wawrzyniak Culver l-lall and Norb Miazga Mr if Abramoslti Coacn Mr T Robb Asst Coich SCHEDULE QV Se t 6 Bradford lurtlecreelc rep Q Oil City ast Vincent Nov 1 Academy Steubenville Totals 168 K It lt LT L K lk LG T P l C J S nski RG Rich Sovvier Elg,l:RTlg'II?iGJig,lqiT1iEPOiEeCaBelgE Vlgjyi Eallfizialc Ll-l mjllism Erggigiseio Rl-l cgiiflvtg l-lall C58 unlllorb Miazga FB Tony Staroccl is Th We D, ,.......,............ 38 14 19 ................... 19 14 Q0 P .......,.......,........ 13 7 Q6 Louisville .,................., Q0 O O t. 3 ' ' ........,..........., 13 Q7 11 lf .....,................... 1Q 7 18 A ...,................. 6 7 , .................... 14 7 7 ' .................. 40 6 ROW1 Chet Zambrzyclcn Bob Ralotes RCW Q Pete Buletnlltoll Joe Pnechotlca Ben Kwnatlcowslu Jlm Rugglero Ray Barczalt Rhrl Zuravlell Mr Robb ROW 3 John l-laburslty Leo Stachera Norb Rydzewslcl Bob Zabroslcy John Malnnowslcu Leo Macuuluewlcz l-larry Zalewslu Varsrty Basketball The basketball team ol1948 ranlced second nn both cnty and dlstruct We lost the cnty champnonshap to Academy In a thrullrng climax on the Academ hardwood The Centaurs never lost a game on their own Floor and also held the most pornts nn the city Raymond arczalc and Peter Buletnalcoft both graduated thus year and wlll be missed when the cagers malce theur debut next year Jam CRuggy Ruggnero ranlced second un the cuty for hugh scorung CY TltUSVIllC Sharpsvllle rep Grove Cnty Warren Corry as 44 Academy SCHEDULE 6 ev rep Olean Bradford Corry as Academy Tutusva lle Mercer 1 .
