We started the year by electing our class officers as follows: pres, Paul Ellison, V-Pres, Jayne Scott: sec, Jean Kaeckerg treas, Janet Littrel. W. W. Langdoc became our first advisor. The dreaded day of initiation finally arrived. It was so much fun that we soon gave a return party for our initiators, the Sophomores. We returned as sophomores in 1950. Now we numbered 37. We again elected officers: pres, Ronnie Kuykendallg V-Pres, Ruth Fietg treas, Pat Dil- long sec, Rodney Holland. Miss Jean Soady was elected advisor. Initiating the freshmen and sponsoring the Christmas party highlighted our sophomore year. Before we knew it, it was time to say good-bye for the summer vacation. In 195lwe were back,40 of us, -- as juniors. Our officers this year wereg pres, Paul Ellisong V-Pres, Gertrude Baarg sec, Betty Emo, treas, Marilyn Packer. Our advisor was Miss Joan Hull. In October we began sweating over our class play, The Poor Fish, directed by Miss Delores Skelton. Soon we were deep in Jr.-Sr. prom decorations. Our theme was Carnival Land . On the night of May 16, under multi-colored streamers, among balloons and clowns, Gibby Gibson's orchestra gave a gay crowd of dancers a wonderful evening. Now we're seniors. There are 35 of us. Our officers are as followsgpres, Dorothy Cobb, V-Pres, Jeanine Francqueg sec, Mary Ann Naftzgerg treas, Ruth Fiet, Advisor, Mr. Hein. We sponsored an all-school get-acquainted party, then had our senior pictures taken at Burch's Studio. Now we're working on our class play, The Boarding House Reach, with Miss Bette Possley direct- ing. Before we know it, we'll be marching up the aisle in caps and gowns-then out the doors of E.C.H.S. with diplomas in our hands. Though we won't attend Erie High any more, as students, we'll always remember these last four years, our High-School years. 19 remiss Wm. X P V A fe S X - L - We, the beloved Senior Class of 1953, being of unstable mind and no memory at all, do hereby throw out on the winds of chance, our last will and testament, hereby revoking all other wills and codicils made by us heretofore: ---- I, Gertrude Baar, leave my ability to go steady with one man to Betty Blasdell. Betty Possley Patricia Eddy 22 H35 ru-im. CLASS PRCJPHECY As we look through the library of time we come across the volume in which the lives of the class of '53' is recorded. We open the book and find Dorothy Cobb playing center for the Harlem Globe Trotters. Clarence Cruse is the manager ofthe famous All-Star Girls Basketball team. She puts the dill on pickles. While we are reading of factories we find Betty Emo making rumble seats for motorcycles in the Howard Motorcycle Plant. First of all we find that Dickie Bleitz has taken over Finnicum's job as official waste -basket emptier. 1 23 Mary Ann Naftzger is star salesman for Ry-Krisp. Pat Holcomb is playing 5th clarinet for Spike Jone's band. Jayne Scottis hauling cleaning fluid for the Holland Cleaners in Erie. Morlan Clark and Lester Dornbush. Morlan dusts books in the library and Lester sprays the people for germs when they come in. She just opened anew bakery. Ruth Ann Fietis her able assistant. She puts the holes in the doughnuts. Paul Ellison has gotten farther from Erie than most of his classmates. He owns a chain of gas stations from Alaska to Argentina. Adalene Heun is his general manager of the one farthest north. Allen Ven Huizen paints the numbers on clocks in the Hamstra Clock Factory in Erie. Gerald Hamstra Proprietor. Nancy Jackson is way down in Texas with a rodeo. Faye Melton didn't get anywhere. She's still sitting in E.C.H.S. shoot- ing paper wads. The final chapter is made up of a little bit of everything. Beverly Thomas is a surgeon. Cutting up as usual. Jean Kaecker keeps Bev's instruments sharp. She's an old sharpie. 24 Kennard Hoerler has put his driving ability to work and has just won ' ' ' re back and forth to the 5 Clinton. 00 mile race at Indianapolis. Lila Van Damme is now driving the Portland bus. Her lif Rollie Seger has just been voted Number One ladies man. The last page ofthe book deals with Robert Ellison. He has just taken over the job as President of Columbia University. From there his path seems to lead to the Presidency of the United States. FOOTBALL In September of 1953 the Erie Football Squad was ready for the big seven games of football which lay ahead of them. With high hopes and good spirits they got off to a flying start. 53 The first game was with Annawan, and Erie was proud of their boys when they came home with a victory of 32 to 12. Port Byron wasn't so good to us but we can't win every time. This time the score was 52 to 12. Better luck next time. We defeated Hillsdale at our third game. The score margin wasn'ttoo big -- 32 to 25, but we beat them and that's what counts. Our game with Prophetstown brought us a big victory. Our boys managed to win this game by 15 points. Good work boys, hope you can do as well when you play Prophetstown again. The score for this game was Tampico-565 Erie-20. In other words Erie got beat. We also were beaten by Annawan by a score of 32 to 19. That's two games in a row we lost, 1et's try and do better with P-Town. Hurrah! The last game of the season and we won. The score was Prophetstown 28 and Erie 32. We ended the season with a record of four wins and three de- feats. Good work arid good luck for next season. The football scores are as follows: Erie Opponent 32 Annawan 12 12 Port Byron 52 32 Hillsdale 25 40 P-Town 25 20 Tampico 56 19 Annawan 32 32 P-Town 28 54 The scores for the whole basketball season of 1952 53 are as follows: ERIE 54 57 57 77 68 54 74 54 68 72 54 71 75 45 54 57 71 60 65 70 87 58 48 68 73 'conference games OPPONENT 49 Fernald, Iowa 37 Port Byron 44 Hillsdale 60 Annawan 81 Morrison 85 Geneseo 64 Atkinson 66 Orion 58 Lyndon 69 Tampico 68 P-Town 76 Fulton 56 Cordova 48 Atkinson 43 P-Town 43 Mineral 52 Port Byron 58 Orion 60 P-Town 59 Hillsdale 75 Cordova 49 Cambridge 59 Fulton 86 Morrison 61 Allernan 55 Row 1 Q1 to rj J. We started out the season by winning the first four games. During the season we accepted with good sportsmanship the losses due us, and yelled with all our might whenever we were on the winning side. We didn'tdo too well in the Fulton Tourney, and we placed third in the Two-Rivers Tournament. However we accepted our trophy with a smile remembering that we might have got fourth place. 56 J, Thorpe, I. Null, P, Ellison, J. Thomas, D. Seger, J. Meinema, B. Ellison, R, Kuykendall, R. Score: Atkinson -485 Erie-45. In the District Tournament we played Alleman. Although we were ahead of them in the third quarter the game ended by Alleman pulling in ahead of us 73 to 61. At the end of the season our record was seventeen wins and eight losses. A record we were all proud of. So, when Pop is called awayfor a week- long business trip, Mom goes along and the house is left in charge of Sister Connie and Sister Betty Lou. Then Wilbur gets his idea. He'll open up a boarding house right here. So into the paper goes the ad, and that night the whole Max- well house is crawling with every kind of person imaginable. When every room in the house is full and Wilbur is doing a bang-up business, Mama and Papa Maxwell come dragging in at Z in the morning -- Papa forgot his brief case. When it is discovered that someone in the house is a bankrobber, Papa is mistakenly put in the Jug. What a mess now. But finally all is straightened out and Wilbur gets his much wanted bicycle. 64 SENIGR PLAY CAST Wilbur ....... Hercules Nelson . Betty Lou Maxwell Connie Maxwell . . Bernadine Smith .
