BASKETBALL Genuine enthusiasm, outstanding individual playing and excellent teamwork were chiefly responsible for Erasmus' first P.S.A.L. basketball championship in thirteen years. The Dutchmen went undefeated this season, the only team in the city to do so. Each team in our league was van- quished twice by Erasmus and three favored squads were out-scored by our hoopsters in the playoffs. Erasmus was fortunate in having Bill Cunningham, the All-City center. Leading the team to victory in the first fif- teen games, Bill broke court, team, and league scoring rec- ords, averaging 34.8 points a game. January, many thought that the Dutchman hopes went with him, but junior Charley Donovan, although only five feet six inches tall, filled Bill's shoes admirably. His fancy dribbling and excellent playmaking ability helped the team win its remaining games. In addition to Bill and Charley, Bob Lawrence, Ron Snow, Len Tobin, and soph Marty Goldstein excelled. The most exciting games of the year were the last five. In the final contest of the regular season, the Erasmus cagers came from behind to tie Wingate and go on to win in over- time. The same happened in the first playoff game against Jefferson at Madison Square Garden. The Commerce and Coltunbus victories also required last quarter spurts. In the final game, played with Franklin K. Lane High School for first place honors, the score see-sawed until Bob Lawrence sank two foul shots, minutes before the end of the game. Coach Bernard Kirsner is very proud of the P.S.A.L. tour- nament this season, and hopes that next year's team, sparked by Charley Donovan, Len Tobin and Marty Goldstein, will do equally well.
