In intermediate algebra our attitude toward numbers changed radically, as those we had known changed to radicals and even more complex forms. We soon became adept in the use of the new techniques taught in this course. We found that problems involving the construction of houses could be solved easily with the use of logs. We also learned that there were many factors to be considered in solving quadratic equations. For the more ambitious student such courses as trigo- nometry, advanced algebra, solid geometry, and calculus were available. In addition, honor classes were offered in most areas, and special math team classes prepared selected stu- dents for interscholastic competition as well as covering the regular curriculum. Many Erasmians have decided to continue their study of math. The rest of us bade farewell to quadratic, linear, cubic, exponential, logarithmic, and generally cryptic equations, frequent tests, and interminable homework with a heavy heart. MATHEMATICS The untiring efforts of the Mathematics Department were not in vain, we all graduated with the ability to count our change, While some of us learned to take third derivatives with equal ease. These and other useful skills were taught in the eight different mathematics courses offered at Erasmus Hall. Ninth year math acquainted us with the fundamentals of algebra. The special fear that we had reserved for numbers soon spread to selected letters as well, only to vanish entirely in a cloud of fascination and grudging admiration for our new friends X, Y, and Z. Tenth year math introduced us to plane geometry. Tri- angles, squares, and circles, which had always appealed to us, took on new meaning as we learned more about them. Mr. Louis Moskowitz preaches to his advanced algebra class on the subject of inequality.
