l if In the poster-lined rooms of the Social Studies Depart- ment, the path of history slowly unraveled before the startled eyes of the Class of 1961. Our Work in social studies was divided into several areas. World geography centered about the study of peoples, places, and products. In world history attention was focused on the political and intellectual emergence of the Modern World. American history dealt with the conflicts in our nation's past: federalism vs. states rights, freedom vs. slavery, isolationism vs. international participation. Through this course we attained a greater understanding of the challenges facing the United States. In economics we surveyed the history and Mr. Herman Levi leads a dis- cussion on the four causes of imperialism in a World history class. ,W Hopes for a laissez-faire attitude are shattered as Miss Renee Shapiro announces a test on pri- vate enterprise. principles of the existing economic order, with particular emphasis upon the characteristics of the modern American economy. s This year a new course, Problems in American Democracy, was initiated. The students, under the direction of Helen McQueen, used the daily newspapers as their textbook and took an intensive look at America's place in the world today. It has been said that we study the past to understand the present better. At Erasmus this was indeed true. With our excellent background in geography, history, and economics, we ended our high school careers with a broad knowledge of the World situation. Students of American history sit transfixed as they await the results of the election of 1896.
