THE ACADEMY The Academy Building at the center of our quad- rangle has long been memorable to Erasmians because it first housed the Old Grey School. Two years before the inauguration of George Washing- ton, it Was, according to the plaque: K. . . built by . . . materials furnished by neigh- boring farmers. Alexander Hamilton, John lay, and Aaron Burr contributed to its construc- tion fundf' On May 2, 1958 the Old Academy was hallowed as an historic building, and the plaque was un- veiled by Dr. Iohn F. McNeill and the Rev. Russell Cruikshank of the Dutch Reformed Church. . AZ 1 l S f Q 28 GO. Officers Philip Satow, Harriet Gellin, and Carol Rogoff participated in this dedication cere- mony. They were introduced to dignitaries, the faculty, and the student body by Dr. McNeill, and they briefly addressed the group assembled on the campus. They acted as ushers and Commodores of friendly greetings to the oilicials who had come to View the dedication. Dr. McNeill spoke of school history. In a refer- ence to the present concern with juvenile delin- quency, he read a directive from the annals of the Academy: No gaming or card playing on school grounds, no setting off firearms or firecrackers, and no visits to the local taverns on Flatbush Avenue Without the permission of a teacher. It was indeed an unforgettable event in the logs of Erasmus Hall and in the memories of the students who were present.
