To the Members of the Class of January 1948: Congratulations upon the completion of your high school course and best wishes for continued success in the years that lie ahead. What those years will bring, who of us can predict? Just a few years ago the eloquent promises of the Atlantic Charter gave men vision of a world at last free from insecurity, hatred and terror. Today, our powerful enemies of the War have been completely vanquishedg yet hunger, fear and terror stalk a large part of the world, and the security and peace we were promised seem almost a vain hope of the human spirit. If we attempt to analyze the evils of which individuals and nations are guilty in most cases we shall find selfishness the root and cause. Selfishness has been the breeder of strife and war since the dawn of human existence. Practically all serious problems confronting us at home and abroad could be solved almost overnight if this selfishness were eradicated from our hearts. If men and nations set as their goals the welfare of com- mon people in all the countries of the world, the dream of peace and freedom would be nearer reality. We hope that your education here has given you the desire to serve your fellow man unselfishly and the years ahead will furnish abundant opportunity for such service. Our heartiest greetings and best wishes go with you. Sincerely yours, JOHN F. MCNEILL Principal

To the Class of January 1948: THE CONSTANT YOU Let not the burglary of hungry Time Steal from your sweetness which you now possess And leave you victim of a greater crime Even While he blunts your spring with frostiness. He will ask tribute of the holclest sort. Your cheek, your eye, your step, your Wit will be But morsels for his niaw. Nor can you thwart The certain plunder of his piracy. Be yours to garner Wealth which he excludes: Faith, gentleness, and wisdom error brings. Store in your heart that loveliness which hroocls With tender warmth above all living things- Until at last there will emerge afresh The constant you, unhampered by this flesh. ELLEN BATCHELOR
