JOHN F. MCNEILL Principal, Erasmus Hall High School To the Members of the Class of January 1948: Congratulations upon the completion of your high school course and best wishes for continued success in the years that lie ahead. What those years will bring, who of us can predict? Just a few years ago the eloquent promises of the Atlantic Charter gave men vision of a world at last free from insecurity, hatred and terror. Today, our powerful enemies of the War have been completely vanquishedg yet hunger, fear and terror stalk a large part of the world, and the security and peace we were promised seem almost a vain hope of the human spirit. If we attempt to analyze the evils of which individuals and nations are guilty in most cases we shall find selfishness the root and cause. Selfishness has been the breeder of strife and war since the dawn of human existence. Practically all serious problems confronting us at home and abroad could be solved almost overnight if this selfishness were eradicated from our hearts. If men and nations set as their goals the welfare of com- mon people in all the countries of the world, the dream of peace and freedom would be nearer reality. We hope that your education here has given you the desire to serve your fellow man unselfishly and the years ahead will furnish abundant opportunity for such service. Our heartiest greetings and best wishes go with you. Sincerely yours, JOHN F. MCNEILL Principal DEDICATION We, the members of the Class of February 1948, dedicate our Senior Yearbook to Miss Ellen Batchelor, our Grade Advisor, whose patience, lfindliness, and expert advice have aided us in the successful completion of our high school education. A To the Class of January 1948: THE CONSTANT YOU Let not the burglary of hungry Time Steal from your sweetness which you now possess And leave you victim of a greater crime Even While he blunts your spring with frostiness. He will ask tribute of the holclest sort. Your cheek, your eye, your step, your Wit will be But morsels for his niaw. Nor can you thwart The certain plunder of his piracy. Be yours to garner Wealth which he excludes: Faith, gentleness, and wisdom error brings. Store in your heart that loveliness which hroocls With tender warmth above all living things- Until at last there will emerge afresh The constant you, unhampered by this flesh. A few women pushed their carriages listlessly-complaining loudly about the weather. We decided to spend the remainder of our lunch period in the cemetery across the street, in hope of finding comfort from the heat. lt was so calm-so very peaceful in the cemetery that it seemed incredible we were in the midst of a shopping district with theaters. cabs and trolleys outside. While men and women were resting here, a city had built itself around the spot. ,lust across the street the Kenmore proclaimed its latest hit. I wondered what these people, buried here all these years would think of everything that went on around them. Perhaps they did have a way of knowing-perhaps . . . I was thrown back into reality when I felt the pressure of a hand on my shoulder. I turned to find a man-white haired but erect-a kind smile on his face-a mischievous spark in his blue eyes. He introduced himself as Mr. Hodgett, sexton of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church. He seemed to sense our interest in the place, and began to tell us about its history. WThe first church built on this site was nothing more than a small frame building. It was ordered constructed in 1654 by Gov. Stuyvesant and it is from this date that our written records begin. This was the first church in the area that is now Brooklyn, and is the oldest church site in Greater New York. The original building was replaced by one of stone which stood for ninty-five years-all during the Revolution. After the battle in what is now Prospect Park, many dead soldiers were buried close to the church. ln 1796 a new building was completed over the bodies of those dead soldiers. For that reason our church has no cellar. L'The bell of our church was a gift of Capt. John Vanderbilt, a member of the congregation. It was cast in Holland and sent here in a Dutch ship. At that time England and Holland were at war, and the ship was captured by the British and the bell carried to Halifax. GGWllCH Capt. Vanderbilt and the other members heard of this, they organized a party, went to Canada and were able to retrieve the bell. They brought it back here and fastened it in its present site in the belfry. Those bolts and screws that hold it now were those placed there by Vanderbilt and his group one hundred and fifty years ago. G'When Pres. Washington died the bell tolled sixty-seven times- once for each year of the President's ag'e. Ever since, the bell has been rung at the exact time of the funeral of every President of the United States. MAH the early Vanderbilts, including Capt. John, as well as other distinguished Dutch families lie in this cemeteryf' We then followed Mr. Hodgett down into the Community Center of the church. We saw rooms for movies, a gym and an auditorium. In the movie room there was a small framed document. Upon closer obser- vation we noticed that it gave the tuitions for the various courses taught in the old Erasmus Hall Academy. It was dated June 12, 1800. Notice the date-1679. We have had the records translated into English and have placed the names of all those married, christened or buried here in separate booklets. uln our church all our services were preached in Dutch until 1822. Old Rev. Schoonmaker was the last minister to preach in Dutch. Wfhese two chairs here by the altar belonged to Dr. Schoonmaker and are probably more than one-hundred and fifty years old. uln the beginning our church had no organ. However, one of our members, John Prince furnished musical accompaniment with his flute. A short while ago his great-grandson presented the church with the original flute, and we have placed it in a showcase at the side of the pews. MLater we bought a small hand organ which was played from the balcony. This section was called the Slave's Gallery because up until 1863 it was reserved for Negroesf' Mr. Hodgett was suddenly interrupted by the church bells and we realized that it was two o'clock and we were late for classes. We hastily thanked our host and hurried across Cow Lane, for truly this no longer was Flatbush Avenue. We heard no honking of taxis or rumble of trolleys as we crossed the quiet country road and made our way towards Erasmus Hall Academy. 4 4 uf 1 . I l i P Q , A W A r 5 ? ' 1 f , N K 2 I 1 4 f N ! In an overtime thriller, they bowed to Newtown 36-33. The Netmen picked up a leg on the Alex Taylor Tennis Trophy, in the Spring of 19415. Starting fast, the grid- ders won their first three encounters, but then dropped two of their last three games. Cross Country, one of Erasmus' least publicized sports, broke into the headlines as the Harriers gained the Boro title. The Spring 1946 term brought on the most successful period in recent Erasmus Hall athletic history. The underrated Basketeers finished second in their division, but proceeded to amaze the entire city with their fighting spirit in the play- offs. After successively upsetting Stuyvesant, Lincoln, and Jackson, the underdog Dutchmen finally bowed to Franklin in the city finals. For the first time in twenty-one years, the outdoor Trackmen ran off with the City Crown. Beating Lincoln in the finals, the Foilsmen captured the City Fencing Diadem. The tennis team lost out in its try for League Championship honors, but gained the second leg on the Alex Taylor Trophy. The baseball team again finished an average season in third place. ikv fiat! wa va In the Fall of 1946 the eleven suffered five setbacks while beating Tilden. However, two of the losses were by one and two points. Finishing in fourth place, the soccer team had their best showing in years. The mermen gained a fourth place in league standings. For the first time in thirteen years, the Quintet failed to win a playoff berth. Despite winning thirteen and losing only four, they finished third. The highlight of the season was a crushing 54-38 defeat the Flying Dutch- men handed Parker High, Interscholastic Champs of South Carolina. Brightened hy the showing of the relay teams, the Tram-kmen completed an only average season, despite the efforts of Bill Grossman. The Golf Team, after a fourteen-year alisence from the Erasmus sports scene, was revived in the Spring of 1947, mainly through the efforts of stalwarts, Lenny Grub- man, Larry Salzman, and Myron Kandel. For the second consecutive year, the Fencers won the City Title plus a host of individual honors. A Sports Luncheon bringing together all the athletes of the school, both boys and girls, and honoring Erasmus' coaches, was instituted. It was planned to make it into a semisannual event. Led by Danny Corsello, Herb Cohen and Ted Counes, tl1e baseball team won nine While dropping seven. Corsello paced team batting with a .450 average. The 1947 edition of the football team defeated Mid- wood and Madison and bowed to Tilden, Tech, and Lafa- yette, up to printing date. With backs Joe Kinkelstein and Leu Platnick and Iinemen George Bergh, Dick Warshor, Leo Rettig, Jerry Marks, Bob Gottdenker, and ,I ack Gold- zweig. The eleven was noted for its spirited play. The soccer team, with Captain George Rosenthal, Larry Salzman, Herb Yules, and Arnie Cohen, had promised an improvement over last season. Led by Bernie Kahn and Frank Mandell, who have captured City, State, and National backstroke Champion- ships, and broken records galore, the swimmers are on the uglory road. Others on the team were LARRY FUERST, BILLY BROWN, NORM MOSBERG, BOB FOSIIKO, and FRED MARTIN. The cross country team, paced by DANNY CORSEL- LO won their first dual meet in two years, opening a promising season. The Cagers, with returning veterans, Irwin Watton and Frank Mazone, were rounding into shape, at printing time. The Flying Dutchmen's chances hinged on a power- ful starting aggregation, but lacked adequate reserve strength. f IYXLZ' As we look back upon the years spent ill Erasmus, wonderful 1116111- ories dance before our eyes, bri11gi11g to mind the fun and friends that the past four years have brought us. Life was peaceful and quiet back in the da s when we were Fresh- men and l1ad nothi11g to worry about. The swimming pool was our hhang-out illlll such mermaids as Terry Tartarsky, ,lean Melvin, Irene Leaders Club. They were Estelle Began, Elli11 Goldblatt, Elaine Cohen, fully ou Friday afternoons at team practice. Our first big achievement was passing our Swimmers, Test-staunchly and bravely we survived, awarded with cards of merit for our troubles. With the first victory under our belts, we eagerly looked for other bigger tests of our skills. Little did we know what we had in store for us in the form of Advanced Swimmers and Lifesaving Tests. Ah, yes, we were eager Freshmen- knowing not what we were getting ourselves into-but loving it just the same. Life at Erasmus Hall was very different from the public schools from which we came. Here at Erasmus Hall we really lived! There was Hockey, Bowling, Badminton, Basketball, Tennis and Softball for those who loved athletics. Four years is a long time and during that time we had our lingers in every one of those pies. As Upper Freshmen we really ran ourselves ragged. We joined the Bowling Club and lugged bag and baggage out to the Lincoln Road 4 A fLf1,AgA,AYftYAvA',L,1YA-,X Bowling Alley. getting there exhausted but eager to try our hand to see how many strikes we could chalk up. It was usually a tie between Estelle Regen and Helene Login. Basketball started and a new world opened up for us. Anyone who has watched or participated in a game will know the reason why. The swish of a ball as it goes through the basket, the long shot of a good player, the tension that comes with a tie score near the end of the second half-that is basketball, an exciting and invigorating game which we tried to master. We boasted of many stars of which Diane Braun- schweiger and Elaine Cohen were the brightest. In Third Term we were introduced to a new evil-Physical Fitness Tests. Our stomachs turn and our muscles quiver at the thought of the push-ups, groans, aches-and linament bottles. In Fourth Term our fame spread and brought fear to the hearts of our opponents. We became THE lV's. We started softball and did remarkably well. CThis is a gross understatementj. Until the very last game of the season we were unbeaten and tied with the mighty 8's for Major Mlffsw. We had broken a precedent and the defeated upper termers frowned upon us. Cloria Leflier and Marilyn Trachtman, lost the final game and had to accept second place. We had thus achieved fame and our grade from that time on was destined for bigger and better things. At the end of Fourth Term five very fortunate girls were admitted to the Leaders Club. They were Estelle Regen, Ellin Coldblatt, Elaine Cohen, Judy Lancs and Cloria Malden. Later Claire and Naomi Herman joined the ranks. In Seventh Term Elaine Cohen and Judy Lanes became Sect. and Treas. of that organization and in Eighth Term the officers were Gloria Malden, Judy Lanes. Elaine Cohen and Ellin Coldblatt as Pres., Vice-Pres., Sect., and Treas. respectively. In Sixth Term our teams emerged victorious in every branch of girls sports. We were the heralded Queens of Sport-Triumphant- Untouchable. The champions of the hockey fields, where after long and ww , 44 bitter battles we emerged victorious with our E.H.'s, the champions at the softball fields, where unbeaten and untied we won our major ME , the champions of thepswimming pool, Where We had garnered 3 first places: Judy Lanes, back-stroke, Elaine Cohen, breast stroke, and Gloria Malden, plunge-for-distance. We had to Wait until seventh term to gather honors in the one remaining sport, when we then became cham- pions of the basketball courts with our Major ME. What a record!- What a grade!-What a life . . .! The head coaches were: Elaine Cohen, softball, Judy Lanes, basket- ball, Ellin Goldblatt, Tennis and Gloria Malden, hockey. Our eyes close and Wedream. Will we ever forget it? The thrills, the excitement, the fun .... It was this that made Erasmus Hall our neverito-be-forgotten land- A Wave, a tear, and good-bye. To the Music Department-we leave Seniors who are all members of the Cantata, Choral and Glee Clubs. To Mr. Dane-we leave a copy of the magazine HToday's Woman. To the French Department-we ask just one question, MParlez vous Francais'?', To the uFreshie',-all we can leavehis sympathy. To the entire Faculty-we leave Schrafftis with a new price list to meet their budgets, scooters so they can eliminate rides on the Flatbush Avenue trolleys, and suits of armor for protection when they push past students in the hall, on the stairway, and under the arches. To Dessy-we leave a new edition, but be sure its covered. To Erasmus Hall-we leave after four wonderful years. We, the undersigned, having after four for morej years set down for posterity all that we Wish to leave , do hereby attest the legality of this document to be known as the Last Will and Testament of the Class of February 1948. CLUB ACTIVITIES Erasmus Hall in the past few years has broadened greatly upon clubs, sports, and other extra curricular activities . . . It's for every Joe and Josie Erasmus to take advantage of these opportunities offered. Why, when we first entered the Old Grey School very few of us were aware of the scope of clubs and teams that were to be found to suit the tastes and interests of all. Arista is the honor society of the school. It was founded at Erasmus Hall by Dr. Walter B. Gunnison in 1910, when he was principal. From this club grew the Arista League, the honor organization of all the New York City High Schools. To be a member of Arista, one must have attained the highest records in scholarship, character and service. The present adviser is Miss Mildred Noxon. On Friday afternoon, X. Y. Z., the Mathematics Club of the school under the supervision of Mrs Ruth Berkowsky holds its meetings. This group gives assistance to students who are weak in math. Those who have gone into the complicated intricacies of Trigonometry, Plane Geometry, Algebra or Intermediate Algebra have also found help there. The Camera Club does the job of photographing the important events that occur during the school year. Professional men from the business world give lectures on the fine points of this art, and teach these young hopefuls the Mtricks of the trade. Strains of the old ballads M0n Top of Old Smoky, and HGolden Slippersf' and notes from a well pitched guitar can be heard coming from the Folklore Club with Mr. Samuel Gallant as its leader. To show off the NBards of the school we have Footlighters, the Dramatic Club. Under the capable supervision of Mrs. Betty Sierles they have delighted us with many line chapel programs. Other outstanding activities are the Chess Club, The Earth and Science Club, Rostra, The Red Cross Club, La Tertulia, Les Cadets, Senate and Classica Sodalitas. Yes, indeed, many activities do occur after the hours spent Readin', Bitin' and doing ilfiithmetic. mwwmgqm, 'hr , p l, N 3,07 fl My viii X Za' 1 1 ff f . fc? A ,4.........,...,. ...,4.....A, . .. ...,... . Remember our first year? We came to school at ten after eight to be doubly sure we would be on time for our first class. We'd rush to Quiet Period so as to have plenty of time to fill out everything but income tax blanks, which we were sure had been omitted by some mistake, to join the C.U. and to subscribe to the Dutchman. As a night's homework we inflicted the G.O. handbook upon ourselves. Each football game found us cheering wildly, camouliaged beneath banners and buttons. We attended the Spring Concert, simple-minded enough to believe that this was an extenuating circumstance which excused us from all home- work. Our teachers believed differently, however, and Freshmen or no Freshmen, we had to learn the hard way. Life had it's compensations, though, for regentis week found us sunning ourselves at exclusive Bay 4. As Sophisticated Sophmores we discovered the marvels of an infir- mary pass, we drew up plans for the construction of an excalator to Studio D, and we begged, borrowed, or stole upper-classmen's program cards so we could proudly flaunt senior buttons. At that time we received meager allowances which forced us to eat in L'Pierre's Food Emporium which was flanked by the bookroom, boiler room, and swimming pool. For the first time the grade became outstanding when Sylvia Spivak took over the job of Girl Leader of Junior Arista. Now we could sit in Chapel and pick out familiar faces in the vocal and instrumental music clubs as well as in the Footlighters. We finally belonged!! By the end of the term, we were superb marksmen . . . Dessy was richer by some hundred odd pennies and we experienced our first RECENTS. THREE ..., ,,.,...,,,,.,...,..,,,,.......,....,,.,...,,... In our Junior year we attended the G.0. Carnival in gym 425 and helped to elect Mr. Stratton as the most Mbeautifulw in The Teachers Baby Beauty Contest. We ransacked our homes for old clothes to send over-seas. At this time, Garfield's wasnit so uelitei' and we could dish the dirt without fear of spoiling the surroundings. We still weren't brave enough to stand up before Miss Stanton's unwavering glance and did everything in our power fexcept behavej to avoid her domain. We saw Bernie Kahn and Frank Mandel score some points for the MFlying-Fish. On another stage Ruth Spinner and Celia Winderbaum made the school sit up, in their Chapel seats, no less, and take notice of our grade with their performances in Mary, Queen of Scots. Helene Login and Leah Green won first and third prizes respectively in the Richard E. Young Contest. This year we found how it felt to have and take conflicting regents. FOUR .4.........i.4,........,,...,i.......,,4,........ti. Hail to the mighty Seniors! This was the MEra of Figetsw with close campaigning among Bob Levey and Maurice Kogut, Nancy Stone and Joan Platt, Jeanne Melvin and Elaine Yukelson, all running for G.O. office. We crowded into 314 to listen to Bruce Crystal on the rampage for better student government while the minutes slipped through the fingers of Joan Langs and later, Shari Nestler. The names of Stan Juroff, Selma Mehlman and Myron Kandel caught our eyes as we opened our Dutchman falso that of an insignificant but striving reporter, Dorine Greenbergj. On a Friday night in May '47, Miss Batchelor greeted us as we descended to gym 57 for our Lucky 7 Dance. Herb Hartig and Bernie Sunshine kept us entertained, each in his own way. Next thing we knew we had elected Shelly Gross, Charlie Rosenblum, and Sheila Cooperman as our Grade 8 officers. We were staring into a camera and vowing as we left the photographers that not one of the proofs would come outi-- we weren't too far from wrong. Soon after we were penniless, what with the Yearbook, the Prom, and Senior Dues. In senior singing we managed to conveniently lose our voices when we were called upon to sing alone, but what can be expected at that ungodly hour? We deciphered college applications and brushed up for the college board. We no longer looked forward to graduation for we knew that the things we had found fault with had helped to make up the four MBest Years of Our Livesf, YOUR SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHER ir A' ir TO ALL OUR FRIENDS OF ERASMUS HALL HIGH SCHOOL REMEMBER In Flatbush lfs In Brownsville It's ALEON PHOTOGRAPHERS METZ PHOTO STUDIOS 1075 IVLATBIISH AVENUE 1525 PITKIN AVENUE Nr.
