The chief matter under con- sideration, newspapermen were in- formed, was the further lowering of the federal income tax, and of other direct taxes levied by the federal government, since, even with the sizable reduction made this year in the now rapidly decreasing national debt, the expenses of the govern- ment for the past fiscal year have been reduced thirty percent. Rita Reiskiri, personal secretary to the President, said that the Chief Execu- tive communicated to the Cabinet members the long awaited details of his recent conference with Presi- dent del Pasos of Argentina, at which the two Chief Executives, as- sisted by the United States Secretary of State, Robert Solomon, drew up a list of principles for future co-opera- tion between our two countries. This completes the last of the twenty agreements which the United States has been working to bring about ever since Cordell Hull, former Sec- retary of State, entered upon his duties. It was thought necessary to include some provisions about co- tContinued on P. 43 AMERICAN MEDICAL ASS'N OPENS CONVENTION ,il- Under the auspices of the Ameri- can Medical Association, a cam- paign for funds was begun in Chicago yesterday with a special plea by Doris Freedman, Red Cross head, for a nation-wide drive to aid those caught in the recent Los Angeles earthquake. Miss Freedman reported that conditions are more serious than first believed, and that DODGERS CAPTURE GRID HONORS AGAIN The Brooklyn Dodgers, fightingest team that professional football has seen in years, yesterday took the National League championship for the fourth time in the past five years by defeating the Chicago Bears, 43-0, and at the same time stretched their phenomenal streak to thirty-one consecutive wins. The victory was directly due again this year to a well-balanced team, with a star backfield, sparked by the brilliant passing combination of Hoyle and Hill. Art Hill was transferred from center to back this year, a revolu- tionary move, made necessary by the injury of Taliaferro, who has since retired. Hill took to his new position as a duck takes to water, and incidentally, kept taking passes from Hoyle right under the collective nose of opposing players. Hoyle, of course, has been chucking passes to Brooklyn receivers for the past four years,-and doing a mighty good job. He has had excellent support in the form of Dave Sadofsky, the line plunger who has been con- tinually picking up that extra yard to a first down, much to his oppo- nents' grief. And many of the games, won by one or two points, have gone to the enemy if it were not for the faultless kicking of Dick Wayler, This fellow seems better as the situation tightens. He kicks coolly with opposing linemen all about him. His eighty yard punt from behind his own goal was a classic in itself. And if you doubt whether McCoy Hopson and Frankie Tuccio make the line tough to buck, ask opposing players, because the would to get fContinued on P. 225 the cooperation of all will be neces- sary. There is some question among art circles as to whether she has created a new school of painting, but no question about her ability. This is the second of a series of lectures to be held at the Met, the first of which was given last week by Anita Minne- man, a leader in the field of impres- sionism. She has been largely responsible for the bringing of im- pressionistic art to the level of understanding of the general art enthusiast. The finishing touches were added by the appro- priate and effective scenery, de- signed by Lois Mae Hoy, who is fast gaining recognition as one of the leaders in stage decoration. Ioe fPopl Hatter, a nut on fishing, and his stage-struck wife, Margaret Hatter were portrayed with assur- ance by Albert Iacobs and Rita Fel- ler. The part of Angelica, the fussy house maid who goes around clack- ing castanets, was ably taken by Doris Shekter. Edmund Guilhempe, experienced character actor, was well cast as Bunny Hatter, crazy about candid cameras and Nancy Hayward, who was played excel- lently by Shirley VanNess. The cast was topped by Lorraine Strauss as Gigi Hatter, a nut flike all the restl about athletics, and by Ioyce Learn- er, taking the role of sixty-five year old Grandma Hatter, who flies a plane and has false teeth made out of diamonds. This conglomeration of queers makes up a family for whom the name, The Mad Hatters, is only too appropriate. Each part was portrayed expertly, and with just the right amount of improbability and possibility mixed in to make the re- sult delightful and amusing. lt is so fContinued on P. l3l CLARION CELEBRATES TENTH ANNIVERSARY just ten years ago today a bril- liant young woman reporter named Marjorie Rosenblum got a chance to buy out a newspaper publisher whose health had been steadily de- clining. Adams, and in a little Bohemian cafe in Greenwich CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HOLDS MONTHLY MEETING At the regular monthly meeting yesterday, President William Ballan- tine of the New York City Chamber of Commerce made a short address to the assembled members, giving special praise to the average busi- ness man in this city for his splendid cooperation in helping the Cham- ber's activities. He said that latest statistics showed that the volume of business of the average retailer in New York City is increasing at a steady rate, thereby opening the way for new and improved busi- nesses to arise. It was Mr. Ballan- tine's opinion that none of the fine work being done lately could have been accomplished without the help of Mr. Small Businessman. Vice- President Ned Gorin expressed the same opinion in his report on the co- ordination of selling campaigns in the Bronx, which formerly was the most difficult of the districts in which the Chamber of Commerce was working. But the Clar- ion editors backed the election of a new courageous District Attorney, Ellis Levine, and with their coopera- tion, he came into his office, burning for work. With information and evi- dence dug up by Mr. Silverman and Miss Rosenblum, the racketeers were ferreted out and brought to justice. According to plan, the present Executive Mansion will be usedv as a museum for relics especially pertaining to the former presidents of the United States, The collection will be started when the new building is completed three years from now. The edifice will be on the same general plan as the old one, with the typical columns and white finish, but it will be more spacious, with guest rooms for visit- ing potentates, and with more ex- tensive grounds. Alfred Hurwitz, nationally known artist, is now working on the second of a series of murals which will decorate the walls of the new mansion, The subject of this series is to be the pioneering days of the United States. XS MWQ vnagtm WWW CLASS Do you remember the energetic freshie . running here and there trying to please everyone? Well, don't laugh! That was . x you-Mr. Elbert's child wonder. We en- X tered the annex during the bleak winter N' AX Y month of February, and many of us can i XX readily recall wading home in the deep A L -. I snow with darkness rapidly approaching. On morning session we walked about half famished and listened with great eagerness for the noon dismissal bell. The A 5 Q big apple was the rage and jitterbugs were starting on their wild road to fame. As our second term rolled around we trudged on to the old grey school. Here we were greeted by Miss King, who was to guide us through the ensuing years at Erasmus. With our entrance Erasmus Hall witnessed the arrival of the noisiest bunch of Freshies it had yet received. Iingle bells, jingle bells, jingles everywhere. Shoes with bells, wrists with bells, Made teachers tear their hair. At Christmas time we were delighted with the lovely Christmas program held in Chapel. Iames McCrory's angelic soprano voice led the Boys' Glee Club in the performances. Sophomoresl Well we were getting there, slowly but surely, Cwe hopedl. That term Paul Whiteman, King of Swing, came to Erasmus, and we all got in the groove. Shag, lindy hop, and susy-Q. Remember! The pounding and hammering of machines added to the jibber jabber of our grade as the work began on the Snyder wing. The World's Fair was opened at Flush- ing Meadows and many of us spent numerous happy hours cutting classes to T 'J explore the modern buildings and wander my Y gleefully through the amusement area. 1 ul As the winter term approached, grade W' four went around seeing double, for the Boehm twins held office in Iunior Arista, Q with Iames McCrory as boy leader. Our l football team that year was great. Vic- ky tory followed victory, until we bowed in . defeat before the mighty Boys' High team. yi The end of the term came and with it our no ' first regents. HISTUHY 'Q anssoo, Our knee joints knocked and our numb And our hearts were none too gay. We longed for a plane geometry book, Which would help us save the day. U ' It In the fifth term, our first grade dance r' Q was held in Gym fifty-seven. Iitterbugs and girls with wooden shoes whirled about the room keeping time with the Q musical tempo. It was a big success, and G we all had a great deal of fun. J Teachers wondered, students sighed ' Even President Roosevelt cried: WHO'S YEI-lUDI? The epidemic had spread like wild fire as Yehudi infested the halls of Erasmus. Everyone looked for him near and far but he was the Little Man Who Wasn't There. After a lovely summer vacation, we returned to Erasmus as sixth termers. One more step before we would become real seniors. Ellis Levine was elected to the office of grade president. Erasmians big, and Erasmians small came, went, and conga-ed at our grade-dance, one of the big successes of the term. The lights glared and the drums rolled, as the Erasmus football team filled Ebbett's Field for our first night-game against Madison. The new building, so long looked forward to, had been opened, and our eyes widened in awe when we discovered the red leather couches and seats in the new library. Spring came, and, proud seniors, we roamed the campus, drinking in its beauty as the trees and flowers burst into bloom. We were nearing the end of our climb and we had a long eventful road to look back upon. Iack Hirshleifer, and the Boehm twins, Alice and Edith, became our new G. O. President, Vice-President, and Secretary. N Our last term would have been the A EY perfect end to a delightful school career, . but for the departure of our principal, I' Aa ly Dr. McNeill. Ellis Levine and Evelyn Mar- Q s X golis were Boy and Girl Leader of Senior Q Arista, and Rita Reiskin, Secretary. x And now . . . Our high school days are over. We must leave our school so dear. r 4 But the thoughts of it will hover, , . As we go from year to year. E GIRLS' SPUHT5 Indeed, it was cold those first few months as we trudged our way to the Annex and started the day with an early morning gymnasium class. At first we were taught the principles of various squad activities. But soon the com- petitive spirit crept into our veins and we went forth to meet our fellow Eras- mians on the battle field. Some of us even arose early on Saturday morn to try our hand at the new and exciting game of field hockey. As Freshies, Sophs, Iuniors, and finally as Seniors, we made our way into the park and over the hills to the hockey fields. Never in those two years did we succeed in conquering our rivals but with the untiring efforts of the school captain, Elaine Brillerg fullbacks, Lillian Flatow and Iane Walker, goalie, Anne Purvin, centerforward, Gladys Gross, halfbacks, Elaine Milligan, Pearl Berlin, and Iean Mitchell, we finished our last two years with better records than the other teams had thought we could attain. Also at this time, we sent formal notice to Alice Marble and her contempo- raries, that the girls of our grade were going forth to learn the art of being tennis champs. After many terms of getting instruction from the coaches, our turn came to lend a helping and instructive hand to the more inexperienced, and from our ranks, Elaine Briller, who is head coach, and many other Leaders offered their services. Day in and day out, after school, you could find the girls in their green rompers dashing around at the Mammoth Courts. When the dust from the toumaments had blown over, we were convinced that some day Kaiya Vaisto and Pearl Berlin would play in the National Tennis Tourna- ments at Forest Hills In the fall term, when we were shipped bag and baggage from the Annex to the main building, new activities were extended to us for participation. Softball had its attractions and so Doris McNamara, Florence Ford, Betty Rubin, and Rita Schwartz allotted it many hours a week for practice in the fall terms and tournaments in the spring terms. However, at the pool, the only aquabelles we could claim were Gladys Gross and Mary Ioyce. With their combined efforts they managed to capture a number of the contests but did not succeed in winning the title of school champs. During our four years at Erasmus, the girls have been on a point system for athletic awards. The highest award given to any girl by the Gym Depart- ment, under this system, is the gold pin. Mary Ioyce, Kaiya Vaisto, Elaine Briller, Elaine Milligan, and Pearl Berlin have received, up to this date, the highest number of points. These five girls, together with Florence Ford, Doris McNamara, Iean Mitchell, Anne O'Connor, and lane Walker are the gradu- ating Leaders for this term. At graduation a member of the club will be awarded the Wingate certificate for outstanding leadership and athletic ability. At the same time several other girls will receive P.S.A.L. gold medals for their four years' record in Health Education at Erasmus Hall. 'iOn Erasmusl On Erasmusl Eight on for your fame' '... These words and many other words like them have inspired generations ot Erasmians with that do or die spirit which is characteristic of all Erasmus Hall teams. We are not entirely concerned with the teams themselves, but rather with the athletes who make them up. Who are they and what have they done to live up to the spirit that characterizes Erasmus? These are the mighty muscle men we talk so much about. These are the football players of Erasmus for whom we sing and shout. Wayler and Sadofsky practiced hard. Dave plunged and bucked and Dick kicked for us, and a triumphant team was born. They were out for gore and their spirit and play carried the team along with themeto victory. These are our mermen who've done much swimming round-about. Hard practice developed their skills in various strokes until they reached their peaks, thereby winning many meets. Co' captains Al Mossien and ferry Fischer, and George Kaplan, the breaststroke man, all did their twenty laps and perfected themselves in their specialties. They swam for Dessy and they won for him. Their victories were the entire school's joy. They kept the school driving on to greater glory. These are the doughty racketmeri who give the ball a clout. '12,-'.f7f,, f-lasn't our indus- f ' U trioushopefulbeen spending the last three days reading through the Readers Digest of Books in a vain attempt to digest half a library, before being confronted by this loathsome paper? As he sleeps, he emits groans - pitiful groans. Let us, therefore, enter his World of dreams and see the cause of his agony- The flat-topped desk on which his head reclines has suddenly become infested with hundreds of long-nailed fingers, each hideously daubed with the latest shade of Hot Dog Revlon. One after the other they poke themselves into the slumberers eyes and with each one, new memories arise to torment him. First he sees himself, the object of the derision of his classmates as Dr. Alexander makes him the butt of one of his sarcastic remarks concerning the vast, desolate space between his ears. Next, he utters a happy exclamation quickly supplanted by a heartbreaking sigh. Ah, hahl We see it alll Mr. Rohrberg has just held out a hundred dollar bill to him but the uninitiated senior has made a bet fixed by this teacher and the latter now again possesses the bouncing bill. Torment again . . . Cheese sandwiches, ham sandwiches, baked beans, spaghetti . . . Ten cents, fifteen cents, twenty cents . . . Whether it's Garfield's, Loft's, Newman's, or the Lunch Room, but one scene is clear to him-rows of prone forms-innocent freshmen-lying scattered about as they are battered down by the energetic senior in his everlasting quest for the inevitable homework. As a loud report is heard, we discover the firecrackers lwhich the senior four years ago placed on a certain teacher's deskl come leading in a pro- PL T-TUPPED DESK cession of two hundred dirty gym uniforms tnot washed for four years! executing the intricate steps of a folk dance taught to the boys in third term. Before him looms the bewildered figure of a fellow convict scanning the campus for a familiar person to inquire the location of Room 67. Once again our faithless senior misdirects his own friend. Hah! Foiled again! Here comes Ioe Freshie to the rescue! Bbll Bb!! Halpl Grgl! Grgl! Halp! Our hero dives into the water and is immediately immersed in the rapid current by the drowning manager of the swimming team. He emerges, only to find his slippery victim back in the deepest part of the water. As he jumps in once more, he sees an immense devils eyebrow rise near his classmate. Frightened, he starts to swim back to shore, when he recognizes the voice of the class freak calling to him. Now he is in the chem lab performing an experiment which should turn out to be a rare perfume-the recipe of which is only known to him and one heathen Chinee now residing in India. All goes well until the mixture begins to boil-and then his hand goes impulsively to his nose. The exotic fragrance is none other than hydrogen sulfide. He dashes from the room, up the nearest staircase tto Studio D l, pursued by the forgotten skool. While there, the fire gong rings and he is immediately caught in the rush of panic-stricken janitors, teachers, and other living beings. ln his attempt to get to safety, he is hampered momentarily by the loss of one shoe, two teeth, and a pair of sharpie socks. The senior now commences to snore and as this vocal outburst reaches high HC Csole result of senior singingl, a storm of triangles, Latin verbs, French idioms, The Valiant tof English 5Hl, Miss Batchelor's assigned orig- inal poems, and late slips descends on the restless sleeper's head . . . To the sophomores twho'd doubtlessly take them anyhowl, we abandon the freshmen. To the juniors we leave the startlingly sudden realization that they are almost seniors. To the seniors, who have harboured an aversion to education ever since they worked their way through kindergarten, we give permission to succumb to that sense of melancholy which seizes us all at the sight of the doors slowly closing behind us. To the Mathematics Department we leave our regret that we CAN'T leave Maxwell Rosenlicht. To the Girls' Gym Department we leave a new course in Physical Education which excludes the necessity for daily donning of those gymsuits and sneakers. To the Boys' Gym teachers with the overdeveloped right arms we leave a metronome provided with a loudspeaker, for beating out the rhythm for those excruciating exercises, We turn over to Mr. Stratton the patent for our latest invention-a giant machine which, on being fed several reams of paper and a gallon of ink, turns out seven thousand perfect programs within five minutes. To Mrs. Edgell we leave several thousand clamoring bellfels. To Miss Mastin we leave a dozen gold medals to be awarded to those students of the next hundred years who can memorize-or even pronounce- the name of her pet dog-Albertine Twinkle Duchess of Tiffany Countess of Whitethorn and Snapdragon Marquese of Bobolink-Sometimes Lytton Scratchey- Al for short. To Miss Stanton we leave our checked hat and compound microscope, to be employed in continuance of our search for that individual who, in the course of the four years, has never been absent, never been late, never cut class, nor ever applied for an infirmary pass on false pretenses.
