MCN zwwfrwf qywamvfwmww-it Q r To the Members of the Class of Iune 1941: Greetings to you all and congratulations upon the successful completion of your high school course. May you meet with even greater success in the continuation of your education in college and in Whatever work you under- take in the many years that lie ahead. From the quiet life of school you now go out into a world torn by war, obsessed by fears, and terrifyingly uncertain of the future. Man's inhurnanity to man makes countless thousands mourn, and no one can safely say what the morrow will bring forth. Might has crushed Right, and hysteria has drowned out the still small voice of conscience. It is easy to despair. Youth, however, will never despair. Fully aware of the evils abroad in the world today, our young people have the intelligence to realize that ulti- mately justice and decency will triumph. They have the spiritual courage to face the present and the future eagerly, willing and ready to play their proper part in making this world a fit place in which man can live and grow in freedom and security. i Your education should strengthen this spiritual courage, develop your in- tellect, stimulate the growth of those fine qualities of personal character with- out which our way of life is impossible. ln the difficult days ahead, God grant that you may all be found equal to the great demands that inevitably will be made upon you, and may success and happiness attend your efforts. Heartiest greetings and best wishes. Sincerely yours, 3.6 lOHN F. Even the most curious found it difficult to investi- gate, and Erasmians were denied ac- cess to the gravel-covered rear campus except during changes of periods. With- in a week the most ingenious student was unable to see much of the drama which was being enacted, although an occasional shatter of glass or crash of lumber announced only too clearly the passing of the most familiar of Erasmus y institutions. By the second day of Iune, most of the preliminary work had been completed and everything, -- desks, blackboards, cabinets, and even some of the roofing material - had been spirited away. Floors, wall sections and plaster soon followed, while, to the south, excavation for the new building had begun, fas many Erasmians discovered by lunch-period reconnaissance. ln another two weeks, the southernmost wing of the traditional structure had vanished, accompanied by a large portion of the first and second stories of the remaining wings. On lune 22 or thereabouts, the last erect fragment, the brick chimney, tumbled to earth to lie with the remains of what had served as both a home and school to several hundred students during most of the nineteenth century. Exuberant students, fresh from two months of vacation, found on returning to the Old Gray School that a great change had been wrought in their Alma Mater. The old had passed into oblivion, the new had taken its place and stone and sand supplanted the debris of destruction. As weeks passed, as girders crept skyward, as a metal skeleton was clad in gothic beauty, sornef thing of a collegiate atmosphere was imparted to Erasmus f-fall. Light, clean masonry obscured the ugly, dark brick walls on the south, and the old school was forever parted from the outside world. As the days lengthened and the school year drew to a close, enthusiasm was apparent, speculation rampant. Advance reports of the marvels to be found in the new building were STU E numerous,-well-lighted rooms, modern offices, spacious corridors, and an ele- vator! Needless to say, barriers were passed in secret by independent souls and the wonder explored from roof to basement, receiving the unanimous ap- proval of these self-appointed critics. September was to bring to successful completion a long-awaited dream. In the fall of l94U, an entering fresh- man, admitted for the first time through the portals of Erasmus I-lall, saw in the Snyder Avenue building the antithesis of what he had been led to expect,- no more chicken run, no muddy cam- pus, no crowded study halls with desks inscribed with the witticisms of count- less bored scholars. On the contrary, something new and refreshing greeted him,-landscaped surroundings, broacl cement walks, comfortable classrooms, and adequate coat closets. The stoic senior, by way of contrast, inured to the former, observed the innovations with amazement and made a more ob- jective comment, You know, Ioe, they've actually got a few rooms on the top floors now that don't leak when it rains! He might have mentioned, with equal emphasis that the inunda- tion of mud and turbid water, affection-t ately designated as a campus by the uninitiated in former years, was a thing of the past, no longer to waylay the unwaryg that the flagpole had been moved to the center of the carn- pus, that the chimney of the original old academy, grown weary and weak, now needed the support of a pair of long beams as crutches in its old age, or, that the new wing was equipped with drinking fountains where you could really quench your thirst. If he had been more intellectually inclined he would undoubtedly have noticed the beautifully equipped and lighted library, so soon to become a mecca for all and a truly fitting place to preserve and display our rich collection of records and relics. Then too, there was the much-needed girls' gym and accompany- ing locker accommodations, numerous art studios, additional classroom space, a modern infirmary, and many other necessary improvements. On the top floor, the band had a practice room, all to itself, where it was hoped that martial strains would no longer disturb the tranquillity of well-ordered classes. ln the basement was a shop for industrial arts, wood working, metal crafts, etc. and, on the first floor near an elaborate exhibit hall, a model apartment and kitchen to fascinate those with a yen for home economics and to provide refreshments for visitors, But what probably elicited the most praise was an elevator, rendered none the less intriguing by the fact that official sanction was necessary for its use. ln the eyes of the average Desiderian, the new building was a modern miracle, the fulfillment of a long cherished desire, Frame has become stone and steel, and now a city stands where once, well over a century ago, lay only a few farms and a village school. Yesterday it was a little school with a roster of twenty-six students, today a school of 7,000 students! The original academy now stands empty, awaiting restoration, in an imposing position in the center of a campus of trees and turf, sentinelled by ivy-covered walls. Nearly fifty years ago, the little wooden structure had ceased to be adequate for educational purposes, and even additions had proved incapable of absorbing the influx of students, when in l896, the Academy became a city high school. In the years which followed, by l906 to be exact, the Flatbush Avef nue building was finished, sucf ceeded by extensions along . , Church and Bedford Avenues in l9ll and l925. Finally on November 19, l940 the quad- rangle was completed. Slowly but surely, just as stone had eclipsed the simple structure, so had it been removed from a material center of attraction. Seasoned by years of service it was elevated to the position of symbolism and respect en- joyed by all that is traditional. ln the years to come Eras- mus' sons can expect to be justly proud of their Alma Mater. The scholar on the ped- estal, with weather-beaten countenance, will survey an outwardly altered scene. The historic old building will have been renovated and shifted to a site nearer the center ol the campus. The addition oi the southern portion ol the frame structure, removed in l9U5 when the chapel was erected, and a rear porch similar to that in the front, will serve to restore its original symmetry. Only the shadows of the Arch and the towering turrets of the West Wing will remain to remind us ot the Erasmus Hall that Was. Someone has wisely said that Erasmus Hall is best appreciated by those who have left her. Posterity will not tail to recognize the role she has played in shaping the state and nation, There is something inherent in its constitution that compels distinction and motivates good citizenship. We'll never forget our first day in gym as We came trotting on to the floor and stood gaping at our friends. We were taught the Big Apple in our dancing classes in '37, While today We have ad- vanced to the Conga At the annex We were introduced to the various squad ac- tivities, and to the Leaders, those rare specimens who directed them so ably. We remarked how difficult it was to perceive any green on a Leaders uniform, so well covered were they with decorations rang- ing from orange bars to blue major E's. As We became acquainted with the extra- curricular sport activities, a large number of girls turned out for hockey, a sport which was completely new to most of us. Almost immediately we began to shape a team that was to become one of the best that Erasmus Hall has ever produced. Because of our great interest in hockey we were rightfully called the Hhockey grade. Quite often the seniors referred to us as those dangerous freshies Whose record in mak- ing sticks had never been equalled. During our third and fifth terms we were captained by Edith Kayser, who relinquish- ed that title to Marilyn Murphy, school captain of hockey, in our final season. Since the beginning of our hockey careers, we had been building up our team in antie cipation of the time when it might capture the school crown. The final game of our last season came, and with it, disaster We lost the championship to the Iuniors by a score of l-O, the single tally being made in the last second of play. We had SPORTS to content ourselves with the runner-up prizes of E. H.'s. ln softball we were more successful than in hockey. During our sixth term, captained by Lucille Krohn, we defeated all comers and received our major E's. These awards went to Lucille Krohn, Iuanita Coatney, Mae Lobsenz, Ethel Speyer, Edith Salmon, Ioyce Malm, and Marilyn Murphy. We have not been able to achieve any great honor in one of our most popular activities, basketball. Our teams, however, have been near the top many times in the last four years. Our swimming laurels have been faith- fully upheld by Florence Kahan, Florence Hughes, Faith Dane, Iosephine Cleary, Dot Young, and Gertrude Mazza. lt has been said that Florence Hughes stands a good chance of rising to olympic greatness. Of all the varied activities, there is one which is outstanding, the Leaders Club. We recall the harrowing ordeal ot tryouts for membership. Ot the one hundred girls, aspiring to become members, only a very few were accepted by the club, composed of the choicest girl athletes. The club bids farewell, this year, to several of its mem- bers-e---Lucille Krohn, Ethel Speyer, Marilyn Murphy, Edith Salmon, Ioyce Malm, Lore raine DaCosta, Iuanita Coatney, Eleanor Carey, Helen Iohnson, Sheila Berkeley, and Phyllis Sloan. Although not Leaders, the following girls have also been very active in athletics,e Faith Dane, Iosephine Cleary, Virginia Leonard, lean Cochenour, Florence Kahan, Florence Hughes, and Gertrude Mazza. When the Class of '41 entered the Main Building for the first time, the student body was teeming with excitement. The basket- ball team was leading our Division and enthusiasm was running high. The quintet did Win the championship and We, as Ereshies, received our first taste of Erasmus l-lall athletics. As the Class of '41 started its final term, the basketball team was again fighting for top honors in our division. And once again, the Buff and Blue came out ahead of the pack. The team had some of the finest players in our basketball history. Coach Al Badain called lerry Eleishman, for ex- ample, the greatest player that Erasmus ever produced. That he alone did not hold this opinion Was proved by Ierry's being on the All-City five for two consecutive years. The spark-plug of the team was fiery Captain Freddy Mayblum, whose three star years of varsity ball proved his ability. BUYS' The accurate set-shot of Al Dente decided the outcome of many games. lt was his last minute basket against New Utrecht that gave the team the Division title. The defensive game of quiet and amiable Elmer Levine made him a popular player. An injured knee was no handicap for Lennie Doctor, who played all season. ln the pivot or on defense, the Doc was always a threat. The speed of Mike DeMeo, coupled with his accurate passing, made him the squad's leading reserve. The man behind the scenes was Eddie Kresky, diminutive manager of the team. For more than fifteen years, the swim- ming team has Won the Brooklyn-Richmond championship. Two of Mr. Bannon's chief point-getters from our grade were Steve Sokoloff and lohn l-larrer. Socky was the team's leading breast stroker, taking many first places throughout the season. When not writing poetry, l-larrer swam anchor- man for the undefeated relay team. v T 4f- f SPUHTS l-larry Kaufman, co-captain oi the track team, compiled a brilliant record in both cross-country and track, Bob Davidson, Harold Isaacson, Ioe Salzhandler, Ed Draney and Harvey Shapiro were out- standing long-distance runners while Gus Vlitos and Gene Schneider starred in the sprints. Under their new mentor, Mri George Bartelt, the ioilsmen were Worthy oppof nents for all-comers. Captain Stan Bern- stein covered himself with glory and bruises throughout the season. Henry Stein and Burt Wise compiled an impressive record, while Sheldon Wortzman carried out the managerial duties. Brooklyn is noted as a baseball town and Mr. Dugan has an important job putting out a good baseball team each season. Cofcaptains Ierry Gutt and Paul Esposito were the slugging and fielding combinaf tion that made his task easier. Other star Erasmus athletes were Dick Deasy on the tennis team and Boy Cahill, football manager and lacrosse expert. 'w , , 1 I TTY E V-l Wg: 'l l : -X I 4 V ' ,fx ' Q Alf- lac? DESIDERIUS ERASMUS Front Campus ERASMUS HALL HIGH SCHOOL June 24, 1951 Dear Class of June 1941, This is just to let you know I'm moving! I feel I'm entitled to a rest. After all, I'm getting on in years, and the outdoor life is a little too strenuous for me. I'm going to rent a room with the money I've saved--those pennies and occa- sional nickels you threw to me in lieu of a steady salary. And so, I have a favor to ask of you! Won't you please take care of that old book of mine? I've done a lot of sleuthing and I know any one of you can be relied upon to keep it for me. For instance, here is some of the data that Arthur Schulz, head of Information If You Please, Inc., has gathered for me. Imagine my surprise, when only last year I learned that Norman Selverstone, editor of your Year Book, had been appointed coach of our own Erasmus Hall swimming team, largely through the influence of our Borough President, Tony Faga, and Council- man, George Kavanagh. Now that was an election! David Pear, editor of the Brooklyn Nightly Swallow , ran lengthy editorials for the boys. Brewster Horwitz and Marvin Hurwitz, positive from the beginning about the outcome of the election, included Tony's and George's names in the 1951 edition of the World Encyclopedian . Talking about elections, I hear that Saul Marias is planning to run again -- this time for the office of Presi- dent of the Broad-A Realty Company. From this old post of mine, I have had a good view of Flatbush Avenue. On one of the advertising signs was a pic- ture of Charna Slonim and Virginia McNally, now leading models, advertising Parchand's Hair Shampoo, for blondes and redheads, too! An inside source told me that Ina Rosenberg, the First Lady of Advertising , designed the lay-out. I was also told that Jerry Levine is now doing the graduates' pictures for the 1951 Year Book. From other sources, I have learned that George Lewis, who has acquired a thick Southern accent fronlhis new home town, Richmond, is a very successful engineer, and is now working on a contract fOI'Mi1tOIlAlb6Tt, the tycoon executive of the decade. Milton, and his partner, Charles Camack, sponsor a weekly radio show with popular Bob Williams as M.C., and a trio that includes Eugene Bodian, Dorothy Caplow, and Joe Salzhandler. Only a little while ago, I saw Ethel Speyer, Joyce Malm, and Edith Salmon of the Olympic Tennis Team signing auto- graphs for the young hopefuls of the Erasmus Hall Leaders Club. There was so much excitement that Joan Charlock and Jack Weiss, stars of the new play uYour Cityu, slipped by unnoticed in the crowd. Their manager, Stanley Levinfej, was with them. Just recently, I heard Nancy Washburn, who is the Chairman of the Commercial Department here at Erasmus Hall, and Blanche Sweet, Chairman of the Latin Department, talking about Betty Schulder's new novel nYou TOO Can Be Happyln Also on the best-seller list is Nancy Groberg's NEssays for the Masses.n Only last week, I read that publishers are being swamped with demands for more reprints of Gay Siegel's latest poems. In the same edition of the newspaper was an announcement that Marion Lill and Charlotte Harris were chosen as the two best examples of the nPerfect Secretary.U No doubt you all have read Eleanor Meisel's column uGreasepainting the Townn, about Brooklyn and its events. And, in another daily, Leslie Slote writes a scin- tillating sports column about the athletic feats of our own Erasmus Hall boys. Well, my joints are getting rusty, so I suppose I'll have to close now. Don't forget my old book, where I've entered all your records. I'll never forget you, Class of June '4l.
