Your family and your community have made it possible for you to enjoy four years of high school education in this Old School. You have, in general, succeeded in proportion to your ability and your effort. Wlletliei' you go 011 to college to continue your studies or enter the active work-a-day World upon gradua- tion, you will soon have an opportunity to play your part in the life of our city, state, and country. Today, life is so complex and so infinite in possibil- ities that to meet our responsibilities we must be prepared in knowledge, in character, and in effective habits of thinking and doing. You approach maturity and the responsibilities of adult citizenship at a time when many are confused by false philosophies and specious solutions of the problems confronting us. Propagandists with all sorts of panaceas for our ills exhort us to follow them to security and safety. ln the moral and intellectual turmoil that life is today, may l urge you to hold fast to the best that you have been taught, to use your minds to discover truth, to refuse to be stampeded by clamor, and to remain at all times straight-think- ing, right-acting young people. Only as the level of personal character in public life is raised shall we solve the problems that today seem so baf- fling. The world needs your help in working out these solutions. Your teachers and your friends wish you every success and every possible happiness in the fruitful years that lie ahead of you. Sincerely yours, JOHN F. MC NEILL FACULTY PQRTRAITI' R51 'aku HRS. SIMPSON-Lulin Departnlent MISS SlfYDA3I4Librnry CKIILJJ Jgfdfory This noble epitaph we hereby erect on the 'cbaccampusn for future reference, And before which we expect fand hopej all future Freshmen to Msfajlaamn in deference. First may we present our most fervent apologies to one Mr. Ogden Nash For the liberties herein taken which we must admit are rather rash. Trolley cars, omnibuses, taxis, and feet deposited us at the door of the Annex, And as we trudged noisily to the fourth floor we gained the repu- tation of being general pains in the nex. 'Sophomores sold us the Dutchman, the Vox Classica, the Papyrus, football tickets, footlighter tickets, and we bought everything for each of us was a little lamb, And as a strike against our perpetual hunger one of our English classes wrote a parody about the Freshmen coming down like the egg on the ham. They sent us mimeographed sheets of football songs, but we never managed to learn the refrains, But since we lost to Madison, Manual, and Boys, and tied Hamilton we never did get a chance to sing to our victory at the games. Vvhen changing classes, in honor of the grade school downstairs, we weren't supposed to talk in the halls, And we walked in single file and carried our books in our left hands, so that we wouldn't scratch up the walls. Came second term and we entered the Flatbush Arch and stood gazing at our cherished Desideriusg This is how Freshies always are recognized, wide-eyed, mouth gaping, and frowns so serious. W e traversed the campus, both front and back, from Studio G to the Han- cock lab, And found that the line outside Miss Hodgdon's office, the library, New- man's, and Steffeifs, were the places to gather and gab. Seniors insulted us, and sent us to Gym 57 instead of 425. And our teachers scolded us with knowing looks when we finally did arrive. We found ourselves crushed beneath the cafeteria and lunchroom hordes And learned how to fight our way over to look up the daily specials fwliich were moderately priced at ten centsj on the bulletin boards. ln the spring there was a concert, flowers, fever, and exams, Which was the only time none of us wanted to be an upper-classman who undoubtedly crams. Third term, we Haunted our shining new 'asophomorityi' ln the faces of little Freshmen whom we scorned and misdirected Hlld who still looked up to our superiority. We discovered phonetics in our English course Vlfhich would have been much better left alone, since it was no clearer to us than the code of Samuel F. B. lVlorse. Some of us started to work for Mr. Rohrberg and flourished our little red pencils, And naively wondered what person could produce so many stencils. We joined many clubs, and followed up Rostra and Senate, And faithfully attended each Friday night debate. Many of us made Junior Arista, and there was the usual, wonderful Christ- mas concert, after which we exchanged seasonas greetings, And attended endless program committee meetings. Sorry, but nothing much happened in the fourth term because we were in a haze Since with Regents 'round the bend, all you can do is groan and count the GG 77 daze. Fifth was the heyday of our grade as it was for the rest of the school What with the Pageant in which we took part, our sesqnicentennial cele- bration. It kaleidoscoped the history of Flatbush accompanied by war dances, verse choirs, waltzes, minuets, and the never-to-be-forgotten horse who de- serted his station. We voted in the primaries, for the first time, and took a course in Social Forms once each week And learned what to say, when to tip our hats, and how to be divinely meek. The National Association of Student Oflicers, ably led by Erasmus Hall, met at lnternational House, a favorable location. Grade 7 was the pinnacle of our political career, Almost all of us ran for G.O. officeg some of us got as far as the platform and beamed with honeyed smiles sincere, Some of us were even elected! We filed countless applications for college, And found that what we really needed besides passes, campus chatter fame, charm bracelets, trylons and perispheres, and crises, Was a hit of that recently discovered phenomenon, called knowledge. Having supported our Senior Hop and hoping for a Senior Prom, We ceased to consider Arch Patrols, up-staircases, and busied our ad- vanced brains, sharpened by scholastic aptitude tests, with fvelly solly. Mr. Wellsj things to come. ZMZS 7 dgioorlb AS THE YEARS have rolled on, girls have finally earned their rightful position in the world of sports. Basketball was the first sport played by girls in Erasmus Hall. ln 1906 the seniors. instructed by Mrs. Edgell, made their debut in dribbling, juggling, and sinking the ball into the basket. Later this sport was opened to girls in every grade. Every one has his 4cWHtCI'lOOl7 and this senior class is no exception. This is the only sport in which we have not quite mastered the technique of team work. The results of the round robin basketball tournaments planned by head coach, Marjorie Wieideman, and her assistant. Rose Perrone, showed that this was true. Three years after basketball was introduced in Erasmus Hall. Miss Turner told the students of an English game called hockey. Teams were formed and today it is the most popular of all the girls' sports. XVOIHGIIQS Hockey Leagues have been formed which are a goal for many an Erasmus Hall hockey player. When the players of our senior class were mere fresh- men, with but a few weeksi practice, their team was victorious over the Soph- omore and the Junior teams. This same team was the runner-up in the hockey tournaments held in Prospect Park last fall. The spring coaching schedule, which was planned by the head hockey coach, Jeanne Neubecker. and assist- ant, Roberta Morgan, provided for an adequate number of coaches to aid the girls during the practice season. ln l9l5. about the time women were giving up the idea of wading and were going in for swimming in earnest, a small group of girls went to Public School 89 in the afternoon with Miss Guerin to practice their swimming. In 12 1925 our own Erasmus pool was opened and a year later swimming became compulsory, for each girl had to pass a swimming test before being able to graduate. Later swimming teams and Junior and Senior Life Saving classes were formed. Many of the graduates have received their Senior Life Saving awards which they will proudly wear on their swim suits this sunnner. Owing to Miss Dibble's efforts. a tennis club was formed in 1916. The first club consisted of a few enthusiastic girls while the 1939 tennis club has about five hundred enlisted members. of whom Betty Armstrong is the head coach. The most recent of girls' sports is indoor baseball, perhaps better known as softball. Since 1926 it has grown in popularity until it has become one of the most popular sports among the young women. The spring round robin tournaments were planned by Lois Black and Esther Rojas. As a result of her noticing a number of natural leaders among the many girls who came to the park to play hockey. Miss McGlue formed the Eras- mus Hall branch of the Leaders' Club. This club is made up of the best girl athletes in the school. Girls applying for membership must be more than 'flosie Musclesf' They must have an outstanding character rating and a friendly personality as well as leadership ability. Some of the many duties of these girls are: assisting the teachers in various gym classes, managing squad periods. conducting annual Held meets, and coaching girls in all the sports given to the girls in Erasmus. It was the Leaders who transformed Gym 57 into a splendid recreation room which now accommodates over one hundred girls a week. Besides all these duties, the Leaders are trained to acquire social poise by acting as hostesses for the Arthur Murray Dance Club. The Leaders elected the following girls. all seniors, to be their officers for this spring term: president. ,lean Neubeckerg vice-president, Elizabeth Armstrongg secretary, Lois Black. The following is a list of the Leader graduates. Elizabeth Armstrong. Lois Black, Elizabeth Finochio. Shirley Fouts, Sheila Lemont, Dorothy Munson, Jean Neubecker, Sylvia Paret, Rose Perrone. and Esther Rojas. Lorraine Bandeccha and Norma Frugone, who are not in the Leaders, Club. must be mentioned for their outstanding talents in sports. We thank you, Erasmus, for opening a new vista to us and for teaching us to look on the right side of the tapestry of life. We are most thankful for the greatest of all gifts-the power to lose and take our disappointments gracefully. 13 0 5 7 aggaorfa ATHLETES COME and athletes go, but this year more than ever before, the coaches of the various teams will be a sadder lot after graduation day has passed into history. Some of the most noted athletes will terminate their high school careers on that long-awaited day. When we started back to school in September, 1938, the football team was already hard at work. We had lost nearly all of our veterans at the June graduation, so the outlook was very bleak. However, those who did not have full faith in our team were in for a great surprise. They had not reckoned with the coaching ability of Mr. Sullivan, nor had they thought of the inspiring leadership of Captain Joe Watt. Least of all had they thought of the spirit and tradition held by Erasmus teams of former years. This fighting Erasmus Hall football team of 1938 surprised the news- paper writers and proceeded methodically to sweep aside all opposition. weak and strong alike. They beat Manual by such a wide margin Q26-05. that the defeats we had suffered at Manual's hands during our Freshman and Junior years were practically forgotten. On they Went to greater glory. and when the last Whistle had been blown, this light inexperienced team was the proud possessor of the mythical title 4'City Champs. YVho will forget the uTouchdown Twins, Joe Vlfatt and Max Hubenfeld: the block- ing and tackling of Morty Raufg the running of Mike Andreacchi and Dave Feldman: and the line play of Joe MacAvoie. Q'Red Fuller. Doc Parker. Killer Kampf: HBibbetts Bassinette. Ted Kelly. Burt Beattie. Wvarren Slavin. and Cy Getzolf? ln October the swimming and basketball teams begin to practice. The swimming coach is the one coach who never has to worry about having his team broken up by graduation. It seems to me that no matter how many lvl' members of the squad graduate, there are always more good swimmers coming up from the lower grades to H11 in. ln thirteen years Erasmus Hall has won the Brooklyn Borough Swimming Championship twelve times. This is a record of which no other school can boast. This past season was com- pleted with an unbroken string of fifty-four meet victories, a striking tribute to the coach, Mr. Mullen, and to the Captain, Dick Grego. Those on the team were:-VVilbur Carlson, Bob Futoran. Bohin Black, Bob Krieg, John Bernhardt, Mike Priano, Andy Campolo, Pete Wfilliams, Jim lVlurphy. and Judah Klein. This year for the first time Erasmus Hall won the Kammrer Trophy, emblematic of the City Championship. Wie hope that in the future. the new coach, Mr. Bannon, will have as many successful championship teams as Mr. Mullen had in the past. YVhile the swimming season was going on, basketball was getting under way. This year Coach Badain had a serious problem confronting him. Last year we had won the Brooklyn Division Two Championship and the entire school was clamoring for the performance to be repeated. VVe had lost all but two of our regulars by graduation and the boys selected were fast and good shots, but, the average height was less than five feet eight inches, a distinct disadvantage'in a sport of this type. However. they fought hard in every game and even though they did not win them all, they pulled a few upsets out of the hat and gained a world of experience for next year. The Captain was Ray Rudden, and other members of the team were:-Fred Mayblum, Bernie Mittman, Ira Beardsley, Artie Gurfein. Jerry Fleischman, Al Ross, Eddie Levine, Bay Bernstein, Arny Snyder, and Bob Alson. One of the sports recently revived in Erasmus Hall is fencing. Last year. coached by Mr. Kalman, the team had a very successful season and got as far as the finals in the Round Robin Tournament which determined the City Champions. This year, however, the team was not as fortunate. It lost several of its best foilsmen by graduationg it was not able to procure a coach, and it had to practice in the Student Cafeteria. By dint of much hard plugging by its Captain, Ray Crayefsky, the team was able to enter into competition with the other schools of the borough. Because of its lack of coaching it was slow hitting its stride, but even so, the team was able to finish the season with a record of three victories, three losses and one tie. Others on the team were:eCene Lee, Bernie Stein, Jim Velasquez, Santo Piluso. and Gene Perlowin. Perlowin lost only one bout during the whole season. Since they will be coached by the very versatile Mr. Resnick next year. we are quite sure that the Erasmus Hall Fencing Team will resume its winning ways and add another feather to the cap of Old Desiderius. Since the very popular game of football is played at the same time that the soccer team has its season, soccer is forced to take the back seat when it comes to the question of spectators. However, this lack of rooters does not bother the members of the squad a single bit. They play with the same spirit and determination as the boys on the gridiron. Not since 1935, when we lost the Brooklyn Championship to New Utrecht, have we had a team of championship caliber. This year things seemed to look better. and there was hope that we might again invade the ranks of the Champions. However. bad breaks and injuries hampered the potentiality of the team. Wlith all the fine coaching of Mr. Caldwell, the best the team could show for its efforts was one victory. four losses. and three ties. Many of the members of the team graduated in January and more are graduating now. The gaps left by these outstanding athletes will be hard to fill. Although the cross-country team does not have the interest and following of some of the other sports, the barriers of the team. under the expert 'tute- lage of Coach John Reinhardt. keep plugging along. Last year. for the first time in many years, they succeeded in capturing the Brooklyn Cross- Country Championship. Because of graduation. several of their mainstays were lost. But under co-captains Don O'Leary and Matt Broughton. they staged a sensational comeback. They did not win all of their dual meets. but when it came time for the Brooklyn Championship Meet. they had hit 16 their peak. They were tuned perfectly for the race, and for the second consecutive time, Erasmus Hall came home with the Brooklyn Championship Trophy. Don O'Leary won the meet for us by winning hrst place. Ed Draney, last year's Captain, Hnished seventh. The team included: Dick McManus, Maurice Lescroat, Jay McCauley, Louis Diamant, lan MacKenzie, and Fred Faehndrich. Closely related to cross-country is track. This team, like others, suffered because of graduation. Last year, we had a fairly good team which went quite far i11 competition, but Andreacchi and the Feldman twins are gone and it looks like a lean year for the track team. Perhaps Mr. Reinhardt will be able to bring Lady Victory back to his team and restore our track team to its proper place at the top of the list. Lacrosse, the favorite sport of every rough and ready boy, is the game devised by the American Indian. Eras- mus Hall High School always had a good Lacrosse team until the sport was tabooed six or seven years ago by the Board of Education. How- ever, there was such a strong demand for its return that in 1938 Eras- mus Hall again became one of the competitors in the series of games played by borough schools. Under the watchful eyes of lVlr. Row- land, a good team was soon developed. From this team of 1938, Arty Robertson, George Fuller, and Saul Kampf were chosen to be members of the Northern All-Star team which played an All-Star team from the South at Baltimore, Md. This year with Don Wliite, Don Seixas, Wiarren Slavin, Roy Cahill, Fuller, Kampf, Jacobs, and Gurfein plus Bassinette, Freid- lander and others from the football team, the new coach, Mr. Kaasman, should have little trouble in turning out a superlative team. For several weeks the candidates for the baseball team have been trying to impress the new coach, Mr. Dugan, with their respective talents. Base- ball was one sport hard hit by graduation, of last yearis regular team, which had little success, there remains only Joe Mele, the pitcher who pitched a no-hit, no-run game. It will be, therefore, a tribute to the coach- ing ability of lVlr. Dugan, and to the cooperation and teamwork of the squad as a whole, if Erasmus Hall returns to its former greatness in this field of endeavor. ln summing up the activities on the field of honor, for the past year, we find that Erasmus Hall has on the whole had a very successful year and that this success was due largely to the efforts of athletes graduating this year.
