Tl-lE STATUE SPEAKS The quieT breeze siTTed The sand on The back campus, The sTaTue oT Erasmus read on in a depTh oT silence, unbroken save Tor The daring chaTTer oT nomad sparrows. The newborn grass sTirred dainTily wiTh The warm air oT summer. lT was June. Erom a cool, dark lair wiThin The sTaTely Old Building a hermiT crickeT chirped suddenly, breaking The soTT sTillness. A lone young man, dreaming near The base oT The reader's pedesTal, awoke Trom his happy soliloguy. l-lis eager young Tace peered quesTioningly aT The rugged ouTlines oT The old sTaTue. A peculiar rusTle, as oT Time-worn raimenT, whispered pasT The graduaTe's ear. As iT This phenomenon were To be expecTed, The youTh Tolded his hands, and noise- lessly seaTed his Tigure upon The sun-liT pedesTal. A low voice, calm, yeT Tilled wiTh ageless wisdom, pulsaTed Trom The kindly lips oT The sTaTue. You see, many have leTT This building wiTh undaunTed sTride and deTermined hearTs. I have seen Them broken on The wheel oT liTe, sacriTicing Their once precious ideals. When you go TorTh, you carry wiTh you my ever-proud name. l have borne iT unTouched by peTTy meanness or low cowardice. WiTh you goes TorTh a greaT banner, one oT noble spiriT, oT knowledge, and oT courage, To wave maiesTically amidsT The Turmoiled winds in The baTTle which you Tace. You are an Erasmian. Your vicTory lies wiThin you. IT is only wiThin your hearT ThaT your goal can be aTTained. When you wriTe your TaTe upon The book oT iudgmenT, leT your soul be proud. Remember, when The sun is lowesT, even a small man may casT a long shadow. l.iTe can never conquer a Tenacious ideal. The low Tones subsided inTo The murmur oT The leaves. Qnce more all was sTill. The young man rose, smiled, and made his way ouT inTo The busy sTreeT. l guess iT was all wriTTen wiThin my hearT, he explained To himselT. BuT The sTaTue seemed To smile conTenTedly, while a sTray band oT sunlighT soTTened iTs Time-worn TeaTures.

REMINISCEIXICES WheredayaThink yur goin, huh? , growled a service sguadder as he crouched menacingly aT The Top oT a down sTaircase. Then They boTh wenT inTo a huddle and became very mysTerious and sinisTer. ATTer we had waiTed an eTerniTy in The middle oT The TlighT oT sTairs, The ser- vice squadder, The locker capTain, and The arch-paTrol capTain, all in The person oT This second individual, glowered aT us and rum- bled, also in a bass voice, You are charged wiTh desTroying school properTy, using The wrong sTaircase, disTurbing The peace, and aTTempTing assaulT. Gimme your program! ThaT aTTernoon was spenT in Room I I4. De- TenTion is a very usual occurrence Tor some people, and diTTerenT habiTues adopT diTTerenT philosophies Toward iT. Some sTudenTs Tind ThaT The deTenTion hall is The only place where They can Tinish Their homework. OTher sTudenTs recognize iT as a place To brood. STill oThers Teel ThaT I I4 is invaluable in so Tar as peace and guieT are concerned. They mainTain ThaT The desk is very conducive To sleep and ThaT resT Thus obTained is soul-saTisTying. We belonged To The laTTer classiTicaTion, alThoug'h we did make an aTTempT aT homework. GOT The maTh homework? o. GoT The chem homework? Naw, l TorgoT To copy IT. Gee, l'm Tired. Me Too. Good-nighTl lVoice in The disTance, said wiTh TinaliTy.l Good-nighTl l 1 And our ThoughTs wandered ouT oT Room I I4 and back along The paTh oT Time. We Tound ourselves as Treshmen in The Annex, where boys were boys and girls sTill aTe wiTh Their Tingers. Ji'
