'fBerg ' 4 J, 1. igl, L, , el f .Q .4 Ik 'i'3il'fTx'2'Qif.2 I . if . we i .gig f x I 4 193 C50 the Glass of ianuar Y first impulse in reply to the editors request was to beg to be excused.-Have you not had to listen to me for the past four years? What more need I say? Then it occurred to me that after a few days we shall not meet in the same way again, for the time has come for us to sever our paths. Therefore, beforei our parting, it is fitting and proper for me to express a word of farewell, accompanied by a benevolent benediction. I rejoice with you because you have succeeded in attaining a goal, and I pray God's blessing may attend your future. Together we have begun to scan that new horizon with expectant hopes-hopes that the experiences, the associations, and the train- ing you have received in the Old Gray School may be stepping stones to greater things. As achievements of men written down in human history and estimated by the world, your contribution may as yet be insignificant. Entering a great institution in a great city, living in a period of great financial stress, you have devoted four years of your time and energy to acquiring that bit of parchment intrinsically, of little value, but for the customary inscription and time-honored seal. A few of you have attained honors and fame in the school family. May these beginnings be the buds of promise that shall blossom in due time. Those of you who may describe yourselves in negative terms will find before you an open road, where you will be sure to find opportunities for conquest and glory. I shall be keenly interested in the future of each one of you. And to each let me say, Forget those successes or those failures that are behind and press on to the marl-1 of a higher calling . Harriet Berg ERASMUS HALL HIGH SCHOOL TO THE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF JANUARY 1935: O-DAY my mind goes back to a day just four years ago, when Dr. Low was enjoying his well-earned sab- batical leisure on the beach at Wzlikiki and when you were still in the elemen- tary schools, a day when Miss Berg con- sented to be the grade adviser of your class. Both she and I remember vividly how young and how timid, yet how eager and alert you looked on your first appearance here. It is difficult to-day to believe that four years have passed since then, that our inspiring friend and leader, Dr. Low, has left us, and that you, no longer children but young men and women, are going on. We hope that your four years here have meant growth and development of mind, of personality, and of spirit. You have been fortunate indeed in having as your principal for so long a part of your course so distinguished a leader as Dr. Low. In the years to come may you live up to all that he expects of you individually as loyal Erasmians, true to the Hnest traditions of scholarship, character, and lservice. Both Dr. Low and your teachers will follow your future work with interest, for your success means, in part, that Erasmus Hall has done her job well. For the faculty as well as for myself, may I wish for you in the years to come the fullest development of all the powers and gifts that you possess, the richest ful- Hllment of your ambitions and dreams, and lives full of service to your fellowmen? Sincerely yours, JOHN F. McNEILL Eighf -eeee,.W,.e ., . we SENIOR YEAR Booic. JANUARY 1935 TO THE SENIOR CLASS: YEAR and a half have passed since I gave up control of Erasmus Hall and it is pleasant to get your request for a few words and to realize that in spite of the whirl of life, I have not yet been forgotten. I shall never lose my memory of our days together and the interest I took in your development from callow Fresh- men to the maturity of Seniors. The Old Gray School is going on to higher things as the years pass and I cannot find words to express my satis- faction that Dr. McNeill was chosen to succeed me. He has so rare a combina- tion of high breeding and courage, of intellect and sympathy, that his inliuence is going to be felt in the best of all pos- l sible ways, without himself being con- i scious of it. You are very fortunate people to have him as your leader. When I left the school, the realization that he was to follow me eased my good-bye. I hated to give up my close association and my friendships with youg but the present age demands youth at the helm, and very rightly so. A thing a man learns as he grows older, is that he is never indispensable. I shall always keep my affection fort you and my memories. All the rest is in Dr. McNeill's able hands. Ave Atque Vale. J. HERBERT LOW Nine qorewotd HIS year book has been edited with the idea in mind of Lest we forget, lest we forget . Therefore, whatever value it may possess is not for today but for that inevitable tomorrow, when the present will have faded into the dim past and the future will have become the living present. If, in that too soon tomorrow, these few pictures and pages can form echoes in your memory- echoes, perhaps, of a friend half forgotten, or of an incident half remembered, then this aggregation of ink and parchment will have served its purpose. X x U, SENIOR YEAR Booic. JANUARY 1935 MERRILY WE GRADUATE I . S Annexites we first began this life- Bewildered-breathless-. Yet unknown the strife Soon to be ours. We thrilled to everything, And knew the bliss a big briefcase could bring. We learned how gay our pedagogues can be By entertaining us delightfully One April evening at the Fac'lty Show- That fiddling, winsome youth was Dr. Low, While Miss Le Blanc assumed the biggest part, And proved the fairy dance is still an art. The day we won from Manual became The start of Sidney Luckman's rise to fame. King's County Hospital was gladdened by The Christmas bags we hlled in gay supply. But soon we turned our backs on Freshmen chores And gained the nonchalance of Sophomores. Il Our leisure-giving year of bliss had fled And most of us were Sophomores instead, Looking wise at those from junior High, And making Freshies bow as they went by. Old Erasmus came on top that year, With pigskin and with puck we had no peer, Among our midst the stars began to shine: As those who were Aris-tidl' got on line, And Seymour Weiss his gay sombrero wore With Spanish medals ,round the brim galore. Out males displayed their powers on Boys' Day And reveled in their supercilious way. And though we found another year had gone, We reached our junior year-and slumbered on. Tufefzty-nifze ERASMUS HALL HIGH SCHOOL Thirty III On Parents' Night our mas and pas were told How bright their offspring were-how shy-how bold. Soon old New England beckoned Dr. Low, We loved him well, and sadly watched him go. With Dr. john McNeill as acting head, We found a recompense in him instead. The borough swimming title swam our way. The Ghost Train wove a spell both weird and gay. Al Blumberg on the golf course made low score And later in all else came to the fore , We tripped the light fantastic gracefully At the G. O. Council Dance for Charity . Then all too soon, our junior year did close, But at its end, wise Seniors we arose. IV No one of us will e'er forget that year, For Dr. Low, who to our hearts is dear, Stepped aside to let our sorrow heal By the joy we found in serving John McNeill. Dr. Low still smiles down from the wall, A gift presented by Erasmus Hall. Nine hopefuls for G. O. ran in our class, But only three now lead the rev'rent mass: Anita Lee, and jean, and Seymour Weiss, Their leadership gave Senior life its spice. The Senior Arista lifted its voice, In making Edith, Flo, and Ed their choice. Year book pictures in stiff attitudes Mixed up pulchritudes with platitudes. And with Commencement come farewells-alas! Thus ends, yet just begins the Senior Class. Ruth Landowne SENIOR YEAR BOOK, JANUARY 1935 FAREWELL We look before and offer Ami pine for what ir not, Our rizzrererz lazugbler With .rome pain ir fmugbz. Om' sweeter! rongr are More I1'7birla fell of fodder! rbozzglotf' -Sbelfey UST as the deep tones of the mighty bell toll at the departing of the old year, so now our hearts ring with the memories of you, Erasmus Hall. The years have gone, and with them many a glorious throng of happy dreams. Within the deep, still cham- bers of our hearts, a dim spectre points its solemn hnger to the beautiful and happy days that have passed. But our door opensltoward the East-a world of light, a world full of opportunities and possibilities. We look forth filled with hope, courage, and faith, and, in the years to come, in moments of despair, sadness or joy, we shall pause to dwell on the tender recollections, the kindred ties, and the touching narratives and incidents which mingle with you, fair Erasmus. We are not leaving you, for there are some things to which we can never say farewell-the friendships made, and the bright memories of happy days spent together -these will continue to live, though the years separate us in the time to come. It seems but yesterday that we entered your protecting walls, and now the time draws near when we must leave you and lend our thoughts and strength to more matured enthusiasms and energies. Sorrowfully and tenderly we must cast out last look at the scenes which are stamped indelibly on the album of our minds, and go forth holding high the banner handed down by those who .have gone before us. Little do we know what the world holds in store for us-perhaps sorrow, perhaps joy. Nor can we prophesy whether we shall wander far or linger near. But as we journey, with hearts sad, joyful, or weary, we shall be able to smile, with a feeling of sweet peace and comfort when we see you again, Erasmus Hall. Eleanor Solomon Thirty-one ERAsMUs HALL HIGH SCHOOL RAMBLINGS OF YOUR NEW YORK CORRESPONDENT January 20, 1945 HAT a time we had last night at Oliver Kerner's Greenwich Hideaway! ,Wfe accosted no less a personage than that highly successful theatrical magnate, Murray Moss, with Ruth Levitan, the blues singer everyone's talking about. In the party were Roslyn fFirstenbergJ 0'Reilly, the comedienne, and Jerry Pickman, Pro- fessor Emeritus: in Mathematics, Edith Nelson, Honorary President of the Girl Scouts, and Jack Spevak, that second Grantland Rice. Teddy Banvard, master of ceremonies, introduced Fannette Ducas from Jerome Kern's Wallflower,'. She sang. Enough said. Then Leonard Paris and Jeannie Friedlander danced to Ravel's Bolero,'. Entered Mimi Siegmeister, Americas sweetheart, who doesn't look a day older than when she entered the movies, accompanied by Al Blumberg. We were served by the singing waiter, Eddie fVom Lehnj. Tiring of the noise, we left in the company of Bernice Cohen, that dazzling wench, Anita Seaman, known to the juvenile radio public as Aunt Donetta, and Charles Salerno, wholesale fish dealer . . . Bumped into Max Goldstein, who looked very cold, selling apples .... Passed a placard announcing the arrival of the circus starring Theodore Hirsch as the pretzel-wonder .... Noticed Ethel Bogin and Joey Palazzo on the bread-line, eating eclairs .... Dropped in at Seymour Weiss' school of aesthetic dancing to find it closed and poor Fay Tafiret scrubbing the floors .... Took a bus to Carnegie Hall, where we heard the conclusion of a two-zither concert recital by Selma Modell and Lydia Ranieri. Blanche Shaw, in her usual inimitable style, was the com- mentator. Wandered into Pierre's, where Ginny Saper smiled, showing her gold teeth. Met Dr. Julius Solomon, newly appointed Commissioner of Morgues, with Si Berle, dealer in ceramics, and Betty Bernstein, taxidermist for the better museums, discussing Luckman's third book, Who Cares Anyway? which completes the trilogy known as Thought . The two earlier volumes, Why I Like Football and Why I Don't Like Footballi' were not well received. Leo Moscowitz, Public Enemy No. 27, popped up with his henchmen Spike Munice and Butch Statler. Elaine Rosen, ingenue, in an ice-blue satin gown, waved from an adjoining table, where Paul Rabinowich, now the operator of twenty-eight coal mines, scowled at Robert Graham, thrice-defeated Socialist candidate. Eleanor Solomon and Sylvia Sackler were arguing acrimoniously over the relative conservativeness of their respective papers, The News and The Mirror . We sang our way home to meet Helen Smith, well-known contralto, all excited because Alvin Paul is to play the lead in the new play, Herman Casanova . And so to bed. The Greek name, which, when translated means The Bestw, was selected as a standard toward which its members should strive unceasingly. 1 I A Scholarship and Service represent the two qualities which are to be found in the students who best meet the high standards of our school. lt is upon this basis that its members, certified by all their teachers, are chosen. For this reason, Arista has become a byword for Scholarship and is considered almost synonymous with Service. The graduating members of Arista wish to take this opportunity of expressing their deepest gratitude for the splendid leadership and assistance which Miss Bertha L. Thirty-fix L, L- SENIOR YEAR BOOK, JANUARY 1935 CLASS OFFICERS T is a custom in Erasmus Hall that at the beginning of each term, the entire student body meets to cast their respective ballots for the students they deem capable of representing them in the school councils for the ensuing term. The duties of the aforementioned bodies are diversified, but they have the end in view of bringing about a unified student body in harmony with the faculty. This body is ever mindful of the duties imposed upon it and thus keeps Erasmus Hall at its zenith of perfection. The officers elected in the three major bodies, namely the General Organization, Class Officers' Association, and the Senior Grade, were:- The General Organization: Seymour Weiss, P1'e.ridenz,' Anita Seaman, Vife-Preridenly and jean Friedlander, Ser1'efaz1'y, The Class Officers' Association: Alvin Blumberg, P1'eride1zz,' Dorothy Stiegman, Vite- Preridentg and Elizabeth Billings, Serretmy. The Eighth Grade: Alvin Blumberg, P1'e.fidenl,' Marc Statler, Vite-Prei'ide1zr,' and Edith Nelson, Serrelaffy. Thirty-fetvezz ERASMUS HALL HLGH SCHOOL - BOYS' ATHLETICS NCE more a stream of athletes will pour out through the gates of Erasmus Hall. Perhaps some of them will achieve fame in the outside world of sports, and per- haps some of them will turn their steps into different fields of endeavor. There will always be one place where their names will not be forgotten, whether they achieve fame or not, and that is in the minds of those boys who attended the Old Gray School with them and followed their herculean efforts to bring glory to the steps of their alma mater. It would be fitting that these boys be brought before you by our telling you of their prowess upon the athletic field. This would be an impossiblel task, for this term the senior grade includes a great number of athletic luminaries. All that we can do, therefore, is to bring to you a brief glimpse of what these boys have done for the school. After every season, most coaches complain of the loss of their outstanding mem- bers, and this season, Mr. Sullivan, our football leader, will mourn the loss of six of the players who rank among the greatest that he has ever coached: Sid Luckman, Harry Kames, jack Helmsteadt, Bob Stephens, Eddie Strassler, and Alex Clark. Sid Luckman, chosen Boy Athlete by his class-mates, earned letters in four sports: football, baseball, basketball, and swimming. Sid, who was said to be the greatest foot- ball player ever to represent Erasmus on the gridiron, will be remembered for a long time for his outstanding performances of the past four years. Harry Kames and Bob Stephens deserve equal ratings, as they both excelled on the football and lacrosse fields for three seasons and established themselves among the leaders in both sports. Another who is worthy of recognition is our great all-scholastic lineman, Allie Clark, who was one of the most important cogs in our grid machine. Allie also com- peted for the hockey and lacrosse squads, holding down defence positions in both. Eddie Strassler, Luckman's running mate in the backfield, was another who helped Erasmus to keep in the foreground as a victor in scholastic football, A man who inspired his playmates to keep on fighting in the face of defeat was plucky jack Helmsteadt. Tloirly-nine ERAsMUs HALL HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS' ATHLETICS IRLS, too, have done honor to the Old Gray School, despite the fact that they have never displayed their prowess at Ebbets Field. They have fought their own sisters hard and well within their own walls, although their victories may not go down in history. Some of the stars in this hall of fame, who shine in more than one sport, are Grace Weeks, Fay Taffet, Anita Seaman-and many others too numerous to mention. Emma Mueller, voted l'Girl Athlete , captained baseball, basketball, and hockey. She is the only girl in the grade to receive a gold pin- for awards in live major sports. As a pitcher in baseball and a forward in basketball, Grace Weeks has attained high honors. Fay Taffet, secretary of the Leaders Club , has proven her versatility in basket- ball, and is receiving two major E's for coaching tennis and baseball. The vice president of our General Organization, Anita Lee Seaman, is well-known in the athletic circles of our school. She excels in hockey, tennis, and, swimming, and has received her silver pin for awards in these sports, For honors in baseball as well as basketball, Bernice Cohen needs no introduction. Marion Rising and Gladys Grifhths deserve special mention for their enthusiastic participation in sports during their entire high school career. Many of out athletic stars are members of the Leaders Club , the girls' athletic society, whose faculty adviser is Miss Anne McGlue. Little is known of their strenuous activities, yet they are quite indispensable to the Gym. Department of our school. They coach the novices in squad work and in extra-curricular sports. Emma Mueller, the president, is receiving two major for coaching hockey and basketball. Two other active members of this club, Gertrude Stern and Beatrice Salid, are receiving their major for coaching baseball. , One of the high spots in the life of a hockey enthusiast is the annual hockey luncheon. It was our turn, as seniors, on November 24, 1934, to sit at the head of the table and feel important. Those who received awards for athletics are: Norma Bardes, Ruth Duryea, Eleanor Garney, May Hunau, Sylvia Lefstein, Rita Meyer, Edith Nelson, Beatrice Salid, Maxine Simon, Gertrude Stern, Grace Weeks, Elizabeth Billings, Sylvia Fink, Lillian Goldstein, Thora juntwait, Ziona Lilienthal, Muriel Miller, Lillian Pierce, Lillian Schorr, jane Sonneborn, Dorothy Stiegman, Shirley Wieder, Bernice Cohen, Roslyn Firstenberg, Gladys Griffiths, Goldie Kaplan, Marjorie Mayers, Emma Mueller, Marion Rising, Anita Lee Seaman, Carmen Sorbello, and Fay Tatfet.
