To God ' s noblest people, in the minds and HEARTS OF EACH MEMBER OF THE SENIOR CLASS, PEOPLE WHO HAVE SACRIFICED UNFLINCHINGLY THAT WE SENIORS MIGHT HAVE EVERY CONCEIVABLE ADVANTAGE IN CHURCH, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY, PEOPLE WHO HAVE SO LOYALLY DEPRIVED THEM- SELVES OF PERSONAL PLEASURES THAT NO ONE EVER SUSPECTED SUCH DEPRIVATION, PEOPLE WHO HAVE TRULY GONE THROUGH THE VALLEY OF the Shadow of Death that we might be depend- able, God fearing citizens, we dedicate this issue of Epsom Echoes . Yes, to our Mothers and Fathers, we leave a little memento that NO DOUBT WILL RECALL BOTH HEARTACHES AND PLEASURES, BUT WITH IT WILL COME A HEART FILLED WITH LOVE AND SINCERE APPRECIATION FOR ALL THAT OUR PARENTS HAVE DONE. Wilson) For many years the Epsom School was located in Vance County JUST OVER THE COUNTY LINE ON THE PRESENT SITE OF THE LIBERTY- Vance Church parsonage. This school was operated jointly by Vance and Franklin Counties In 1926 Franklin County withdrew from Vance ano decided to construct a school building in Frank- lin County. The Bobbitt and Ingleside Schools were added to this district by the school board. The present school site, consisting of 14 4 5 acres, was PURCHASED FROM Mr . G. T. DlCKIE AT THE RATE OF $200 AN ACRE. An ELECTION WAS CALLED AND WAS UNANIMOUSLY CARRIED.; BONDS WERE ISSUED AND IN THE SPRING OF 1926, WORK WAS BEGUN ON THE NEW SCHOOL BUILOING. ThIS BUILDING WAS COMPLETED IN OCTOBER AFTER WHICH THE CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS MOVED IN. THE TOTAL COST OF THE BUILDING WAS $65,000. The first school board consisted of G. T. Ayscue, Chairman, 0. T. Dickie, secretary and T. C.„ Gill, Treasurer. The board WAS VERY FORTUNATE IN SECURING FOR PRINCIPAL Mr. J. A. WOODWARD of Statesville. Some of the many problems to confront the new principal were equipping the building and converting the grounds FROM A SCENE OF BARRENNESS TO A SCENE OF BEAUTY. A QUITE ACTIVE P. T. A. WAS ORGANIZED WITH Mrs. W. G. Kearney as president. In cooperation with Mr. Woodward, the NEW ORGANIZATION worked toward making the school an accredited INSTITUTION WITH NECESSARY EQUIPMENT. PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT INCLUDED AN OUT-DOOR 8 ASKETBALL COURT, BASEBALL DIAMOND AND DEVICES FOR TRACK ACTIVITIES. W I TH A $50 DONATION FROM THE COUNTY AND THE REMAINDER FROM THE COMMUNITY, A KITCHEN WAS EQUIPPED FOR SERVING LIGHT LUNCHES. THE LUNCH PROGRAM WAS IN CHARGE OF MRS. ToLLIE AYSCUE, THE PRESENT MRS. HENRY MlTCHELL. TO ANSWER THE NEED OF A GYMNASIUM, A TIN BUILDING WAS CONSTRUCTED WITH A BASKET 8 ALL COURT INSIDE. ThE BUILDING SERVED FOR A GYMNASIUM AND AN ANNUAL FAIR WHICH CULMINATED WITH A PLAY BY THE TEACHERS AND LOCAL TALENT. The PROCEEDS WENT TOWARD SCHOOL IMPROVEMENTS. Mr. G. E. Crawley succeeded m r. Woodward as principal ano THE SCHOOL CONTINUED TO EXPAND. ThE HOME ECONOMICS AND AGRICULT- URAL Departments were addeo and were supervised by Miss Helen Daughtery and Mr. C. E„ Calahan respectively. The present Agri- cultural Department, with one of the most modern buildings AND SHOPS IN THE COUNTY, WAS ESTABLISHED THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE PRESENT INSTRUCTOR, Mr. J. T. GrifF!N In THE PRESENT UP-TO-DATE LUNCH ROOM, BETWEEN TWO AND THREE HUNDRED STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ARE SERVED HOT LUNCHES DAILY UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF Mr S . ToLLIE FOSTER. Under the present supervision of Mr. R. P. Johnson the Ep- som School is progressing by leaps and bounds. Some of the latest improvements that stand as monuments to Mr. Johnson ' s efforts are the spacious gymnasium, the reading room, the stage FLOOR, THE WELL EQUIPPED HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT, SIDEWALKS, A YEARLY, GRADE A LUNCH ROOM AND OTHERS TOO NUMEROUS TO MENTION. The principals in order, following Mr. Crawley, were? C. P. Rogers, R. P. Johnson. The present T. J. Jessup, D. J. Dark, R. E. Cashette and LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD CONSISTS OFg RICHARD RENN, chairman, K. C. Weldon, secretary, and W. P.. Wilson, treasurer. THE EPSOM PUBLIC SCHOOL FACULTY OF 1 9 8-1949 Mr. R. P. Johnson Mr. C. R. Breedin Mrs. Sybil H. Kerley Mr. W. W. Smith Mr. J. T. Betty’s Millionaire is a three act play. The TEN CHARACTERS ARE AS FOLLOWSg Betty Brown................... Naomi Wood Peter Aoams. ....... .Jerry Eaves Sam Palmer. .................... Larry Lassiter Sue Weatherby. .................... .Jean Finch Nancy Fletcher .....Edna Bowen Mrs. Evangeline Brendl i n ger. . . Dor s s Stainback Augustus ' Winslow........ Thurston Fuller Tkaooeus Atterbury. ........ .Op i e Frazier, Jr. Nora.... .........................Ennis Harris Lillie ............Jeurlene Bartholomew The only scene of the play is in the lobby of Ocean Breezes, a summer hotel on the Atlantic Coast. Sue Weatherby gets a letter from her cousin, Peter Adams, telling her that he is coming to the hotel to stay until his new house is completed. Because Betty has told Nancy Fletcher and her that SHE WILL ONLY MARRY A MILLIONAIRE, SUE DECIDES TO TEACH HER A LESSON. PETER ADAMS IS A HANDSOME, YOUNG MILLIONAIRE. SUE GETS HIM TO PRETEND THAT he is Sam Palmer, his secretary, and vice versa. When Peter and Sam come in, they fall all OVER THE SUITCASES. ThAQDEUS ATTERBURY, THE HOTEL proprietor, and Nora, the cook, add to the con- fusion BY DISPLAYING THEIR STUPIDITY« HOWEVER, THINGS Betty, Sam and Peter fall for her. FERST TO ASK HER FOR A DATE. BETTY IS THE MILLIONAIRE, AGREES TO MEET GARDEN. That evening, Betty comes into the lobby in a rage. Peter is there- alone. When he inquires AS TO THE TROUBLE, SHE TELLS HIM THAT Mr , ADAMS BY DISPLAYING THEIR STUPIDITY, ARE FINALLY SETTLED AGAIN ANO WHEN THEY SEE But Sam is THINKING HE HIM IN THE a sT JUST TRIED TO KISS HER. T H 1 S MAKES PETER ANORY SINCE HE REALIZES THAT HE WOULD LIKE TO KISS HER HIMSELF When he tries, Mrs. Evangeline Brendunger enters AND IS VERY SURPISED. BeTTY, HUMILIATED, RUNS OUT WITHOUT STOPPING TO EXPLAIN. MRS. BrENDLINGER WAS A friend of Peter’s late parents and she tells him of HER ATTEMPTS TO . GET MARRIED. It SEEMS THAT THEY HAD ALL UNFORTUNATELY FAILED. Peter promises to help her catch Augustus Wins- low, WHOM SHE IS COURTING, PETER MAKES HER AGREE NOT TO RECOGNIZE HIM SO THAT SHE WILL NOT SPOIL THE WHOLE plot. He tells her a joke to tell him. Then she IS SATISFIED BECAUSE SHE FEELS THAT IF SHE TELLS IT TO GuSSIE, HE WILL THINK SHE IS CLEVER AND FALL FOR HER. In the Meantime, Nancy has been trying to make Betty jealous of Sam by flirting with him. When he TRIES TO KISS HER, SHE PRACTICALLY EXPLODES AND THREATENS TO TELL THE WHOLE SETUP. HOWEVER, SuE IS SURE THAT BeTTY IS FALLING FOR PETER AND PETER FOR Betty, so she persuades Nancy to keep quiet. Lillie Daniels arrives with some plans for Peter’s new home. She is a hard headed, very business- like woman who will not try to understand the situa- tion when Peter tries to explain it to her. She al- most exposes the whole thing before Nora and Thad- oeus. However, Peter cover it up. Peter and Lillie ARE ALONE DISCUSSING THE PLANS WHEN AUGUSTUS WjNSLOW APPEARS IN THE DOOR AND GIVES A LOUO GRUNT, LlLLlE, frightened, throws herself into Peter’s arms and AT THAT MOMENT, BETTY WALKS JN. SHE SEES PETER AND A WOMAN WHOM SHE HAS NEVER SEEN BEFORE IN AN EMBRACE AND SHE GETS ANGRY BECAUSE SHE THINKS PETER IS IN LOVE WITH HER. WHILE PETER IS TRYING TO EXPLAIN, Sam and Sue come in. Sue tells them that she and Sam are GOING TO BE MARRIED. THIS GIVES THE IMPRESSION THAT Betty cannot marry Sam if she wanted to and when Peter tells her he loves her, she accepts without KNOWING THAT HE IS THE REAL M I L L I ON A I RE . L I L L I E , DIS- GUSTED, TELLS HER THE TRUTH BUT THAT OOESn’t MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE. Mrs. Brendlinger finally catches Gussie and THEY ARE MARRIED. Betty and Peter, and Sue and Sam are marrieo AND all’s WELL THAT ENDS WELL. Sensor Class Play DlR£CTOR B S NOTE. ®!
