His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jonett B.,EPPERSON worked hard to raise their children and make ends meet during the slow years of the depression which followed the post World War I boom. Like missions of other average American families who were beginning to know better times the Epperson's were filled with bewilderment at the mad whirl of war which followed in the wake of the 7 December 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor. After a year of the new war had passed, and the American armies were still being defeated on all fronts, Harold EPPERSON, who had by now reached the draft age, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves on 12 December 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. When he was sent to Marine Corps training at Camp Elliot, San Diego, his mother and father, little doubting that their son would return home to them again, were only proud that their boy was able and willing to serve his country in the interests of freedom and world peace. By 15 May 1943, however, Private EPPERSON was in the field aiding the American forces in their campaign to ward off the Japanese offensive in the Pacific. On the 6th day of August 1943,'EPPERSON was promoted to Private First Class and in November of that year was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for his part in the Gilbert Islands invasion. After receiving this honor, PFC EPPEFISON continued to do his part in the battle for the Pacific, until on 25 June 1944, during the invasion of the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands, this gallant hero of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign gave his life on the battle scarred beach. . For his meritorious' service in the Battle of Saipan, Private First Class Harold Glenn EPPEFISON was awarded posthumously the Medal of Honor. He graduated from the University of Corpus Christi fTexasJ with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1956. After attending OCS, he was commissioned an Ensign on 3 May 1957. After being commissioned Ensign, he reported aboard USS HOLLISTER QDD-7881, where he served in the Operations Department for three years, becom- ing Operations Officer prior to being transferred. From HOLLISTER, he received orders to Staff, FAAWTC, San Diego, California, where he served as a CIC Instructor. In October 1961, he reported to the Staff, Com- mander Cruiser-Destroyer Flotilla SEVEN as the Communications Officer. After two-years in that billet he reported to Navy Sub-Section, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Republic of China, as an ASW ad- visor. Following this he served as XO of USS EVERSOLE QDD-7891 and then on to the staff of COMDESRON NINETEEN as Chief Staff Officer. Subsequently, he reported to Staff, Commander U.S. Military Assistance Command, Vietnam as Transpor- tation Officer, and then was assigned as Logistics Plans Officer at Staff, Commander Military Sealift Command. LCDR RICHARDSON enlisted in the Navy in March 1953, advancing through the ranks of Chief Aviation Electronics Technician. Chosen to attend college under the NESEP Program, LCDR RICHARDSON entered the University of Missouri in September 1959 and graduated in June 1963 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Math. LCDR RICHARDSON then attended Naval Officer Candidate School and was commissioned Ensign in November 1963. Following commissioning, he served in the Air and Weapons Departments in USS RANGER QCVA- 61y, attended U.S. Naval Destroyer School in New- port, Rhode Island, and served as Engineer Officer, USS BRONSTEIN IDE-10371. Following a tour as Commanding Officer of USS HAMPSHIRE COUNTY QLST-8191, LCDR RICHARDSON attended U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, where he was awarded the Master of Science Degree in Oceanography. The Perils of Command What oil - I don't see any oil! 1 I-uP's Hlstonv Years of Naval Service ,L .Zigi EPPERSON QDD-719i is a Gearing Class destroyer whose missions are anti-submarine war- fare, anti-air warfare and shore bombardment. She measures 106 feet from waterline to mast tip, is 391 feet long, 40 feet wide at her beam and has a speed in excess of 30 knots. She has a regular crew of ap- proximately twelve officers and 180 enlisted men who are augmented by a selected reserve crew of 9 of- ficers and 112 enlisted men. The construction of EPPERSON was originally approved during World War ll. Her keel was laid in June 1945 at the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Kearney, New Jersey. Construction was stopped at the end of World War ll and the un- completed hull was towed to Boston Naval Shipyard where it remained until she was completed by Bath Iron Works, Bath, Maine, and Commissioned on 19 March 1949. The ship is named after Private First Class Harold Glenn EPPERSON, USMC, who won with his valorand his life the nation's highest decoration, the Congressional Medal of Honor. Extensive sea trials of her then radically new in- stallations were conducted in the Key West, Florida area until Spetember 1950 at which time the EPPERSON was transferred to Pearl Harbor. ln 1951 and 1952 she saw service with the United Nations Forces in Korea and in 1954 with the U.S. Seventh Fleet's Formosa Straits Patrol. Floutine deployment to the Western Pacific with anti-submarine warfare groups have been made by EPPERSON since 1955. She participated in the 1958 high altitude Nuclear Tests at Johnson Island, and in 1962 she was stationed in Mid-Pacific as a recovery vessel for Colonel John Glenn's historic flight. In October of the same year she was part of the recovery force for Astronaut Walter Schirra's successful six orbit flight, and later in 1963 for the recovery of Astronaut Gordon Cooper. During her last seven deployments to the Western Pacific, EPPERSON conducted operations for up to 45 consecutive days off the coast of Vietnam. As part of her duties she has rescued downed pilots and their air crews and has saved several outposts from Viet Cong attack through Gunfire Support. The ship was thoroughly overhauled and moder- nized in 1964 when the latest anti-submarine warfare weapons were added. We now have aboard ASROC, four conventional 5 !38 caliber guns, and anti- submarine torpedoes. l EPPERSON changed homeport to Seattle, Washington in August 1973 and became a part of the Naval Fleserve force. She is presently Flagship of Destroyer Squadron THIRTY-SEVEN. Escort ships which shepherded ,convoys during World War II ihave, therefore, been outmoded 'and future convoy work will re- quire escorts of at least destroyer speed plus weapons to fight sub- marines that can stay under the water for many days without surfacing. , , Such weapons on the Epperson, 1 details of which are highly secret, iinclude the latest in radar and sonar, underwater sound devices. In addition, the new ship has twin .five-inch guns fore and aft, depth lcharge throwers, torpedo tubes, land an impressive battery of 'rocket guns. Her complement is i about 240 men. Harold Glenn Epperson, for whom the ship is named, was killed du-ring the battle of Saipan in an attempt to protect several of his comrades. His mother, Mrs. Jouett B. Epperson. lives in Win- .chester, Ky. An uncle, the Rev. George R. Wolverton of Marion, Mass., represented Mrs. Epperson at the commissioning today. USS EPPERSON COMMISSIONED INTO THE UNITED STATES NAVY ON 19 MAR 1949 Built at the Bath Iron Bath, Maine, the ship represents the work of about 800 draftsmen and shipbuilclers over a three- year period. Another destroyer is being fitted out at this yard and a third is still on the ways. More than '75 destroyers were built there during the war. The city of Bath has turned out so many ships that no records can reveal them all. -The Kennebec River once boasted 17 shipyards, busy on the construction of square riggers, Netv T pe Antisub Craft steamers. and schooners.
