A Machinist Mate's job is a never ending task of supplying the ship' with propulsion, electri- cal power, and fresh water, all of which are necessary in order for the ship to operate efficiently. An MM may usually be found working in the Engineroom. The englneroom is a maze of steam, water, and air lines, These lines transport steam from the boilers to the turbines that propel the ship. Steam sent to the ship's service turbo generator sup- plys the Epperson with electrical power. Steam is also sent to the evaporators, which convert sea water to fresh water through the process of evaporation and condensation. Feed water for the boilers andfresh water for the crew is an absolute must. The Machinist Mate's job is a demanding 24 hour chore with little glory.
