fnl3 f' THE STORY UF HAROLD GLENN EPPERSUN Harold Glenn EPPERSON was born on the 14th of july 1923 in the big rubber city of Akron, Ohio. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. jonett B. EPPERSON worked hard to raise their children and make ends meet during the slow dreary years of the depression which followed the post World War I boom. Like millions of other average American families who were beginning to know better times the EPPERSONS were filled with anxiety and bewilderment at the mad whirl of war which followed in the wake of the 7th of December 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor. After a year of the new war had passed, and the American armies were still being defeated on all fronts, Harold EPPERSON, who had by now reached the draft age, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves on 12 December 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. When he was sent to Marine Corps Training at Camp Elliott, San Diego, California, his mother and father, little doubting but that their son would return home to them again, were, only proud that their boy was able and willing to serve his country in the interests of freedom and world peace. By 15 May 1943, however, Private EPPERSON was in the field aiding the Americanforces in their campaign to ward off the japanese offensive in the Pacific. On the 6th of August 1943 EPPERSON was promoted to Private First Class and in November of that year was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for his part in the invasion of the Gilbert Islands. A After receiving this honor, PFC. EPPERSON continued to do his part in the battle for the Pacific, until on 25 June 1944, during the invasion of the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands, this gallant hero of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign gave his life on the battle scarred beach. For his meritorious service in the Battle of Saipan, Private First Class Harold Glenn EPPEROSN was awarded posthumously the MEDAL OF HONOR with the following citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the First Battalion, Sixth Marines, Second Marin-e Divi- sion, in action against enemy Japanese Forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas, on 25 June 1944. With his machine-gun emplacement bearing the full brunt of a fanatic as- sault initiated by the Japanese under cover of pre-dawn darkness, Private' First Class Ep- person manned his weapon with determined aggressiveness, fighting furiously in defense of his battalion's position and maintaning a steady stream of devastating fire against rap- idly inhltrating hostile troops to aid materially in annihilating several of the enemy and in breaking the abortive attack. Suddenly a Japanese soldier, assumed to be dead, sprang up and hurled a powerful hand grenade into the emplacement. Determined to save his comrades, Private First 'Class Epperson unhesitatingly chose to sacrifice himself and, diving upon the deadly missile, absorbed the shattering violence of the exploding charge in his own body. Stout-hearted and indomitable in the face of certain death, Private First Class Epperson fearlessly yield- ed his own life that his able comrades might carry on the relentless battle against a ruth- less enemy, and his superb valor and unfaltering devotion to duty throughout reliect the highest credit upon himself and upon the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. ! Launched in an uncom- pleted state the hull was mothballed and placed in storage at the New York Shipyard. A year later the Bath Iron Works of Maine was a- warded the contract to complete the ship, incorpor.ating new designs as she was to be used primarily for anti-submarine warfare QASVVQ. She was completed along with her sole sister ship, the USS BASILONE QDDE 8245 and was commissioned at the Boston Naval Shipyard on 19 March 1949. Extensive sea trials of her radically new installations were con- ducted in the Key West, Florida, area until September 1950 at which time EPPERSON was transferred to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where she was designated Flagship of Commander Escort Destroyer Division 12. Her employment since has been extensive and varied both in her anti- submarine specialty and in duties common to all destroyer-type ships. In 1951 and 1952, she saw service with the United Nations Forces in the Korean Conflict and in 1954 with the U.S. Seventh F1eet's Formo- sa Straits Patrol. VVhile in North Korean waters, the EPPERSON was given the task of bombarding the coastal city of Wonsan, a large and very important supply and railroad center. This was a mission nor- mally considered to be outside h-er class of vessel. Through the cease- less efforts of her officers and men, the EPPERSON was able to main- tain an around the clock bombardment. Routine deployment to the Western Pacific for operations with the Hunter-Killer Groups of the Seventh Fleet has been made by the EPPERSON since 1955. She has also participated in the 1958 High Altitude Nuclear Tests at Johnson Island and four years later in 1962, she was stationed in the Mid-Pacific as a recovery vessel for Colonel John Glenn's historic flight. In October of the same year, the EPPER- SON operated with the U. S. Pacific Fleet Recovery Force during Astronaut Walter Schirra's successful six orbit Hight around the earth, and later in 1963 for the recovery of Astronaut L. Gordon Cooper. The EPPERSON completed a FRAM I CONVERSION in DE- cember of 1964 and as 'a result was redesignated USS EPPERSON QDD 7195. By acquiring a new configuration as well as receiving the very lat-est in Anti-Submarine Warfare, including Drone Anti-Submarine Helicopter and Anti-Submarine Rocket, weapons and electronic gear she was able to keep pace with the highly technological and modern Navy. During her last deployment to the Western Pacific, she was in- strumental in aiding U. S. Forces in the Vietnam Conflict. Conduct- ing operations for a maximum of 41 days off the Vietnam coast enabled the EPPERSON to display her many talents by rescuing downed pilots and their air-crews and saving several outposts from Viet Cong attack by use of the ship's gunfire support. ' She returned to Pearl Harbor, after visiting Sydney, Australia, in March of 1966. EPPERSON participated in several Gemini support missions as a standby recovery ship during the past summer. Commander, U.S. Navy Commander WILSON was born in New London, Connecticut on 3 April 1927. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in June 1944, and was assigned to recruit training at Camp Perry, Virginia. Upon completion of recruit training, he attended the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School at Bainbridge, Maryland. He won a Presidential Appointment to the Naval Academy entering in June 1945 and graduating on 3 June 1949. As an Ensign, his first assignment was to the Gunnery Department of the USS ROANOKE CCL 1453. He became Signal Officer of the USS ROANOKE before being ordered to Electronics Material Officers School, at Treasure Island, USS DYESS CDD 8803 where he served as Electronics Material Officer, then as First Lieutenant, and finally as Gunnery Oflicer. LT Cjg3 WILSON was next ordered to the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, California in August, 1953. In 1955 he was awarded a B.S. degree in Engineering Electronics and in 1956 he was awarded a M.S. degree in the same field. Upon com- pletion of post-graduate training, Lieutenant WILSON served as Communications Oflicer on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Flotilla Six until December of 1958 when he reported as Executive Oflicer of USS BENHAM CDD. 7963. In March of 1960, Lieutenant Commander WILSON was assigned to Washington, D.C. for duty in the Oflice of the Chief of Naval Operations as the Head of the Radar Research and Development Branch COP 7333. MC CAIN CDL 33. CDR WILSON served as Commanding Oiiicer of the USS JOHN S MC CAIN CDL 33 until June 1966 when that ship was decommissioned for a conversion period. I have been greatly honored to have commanded a fast ship and we have gone in harms way. Epperson is every inch a destroyer and her crewall destroyermen. What is a destroyer? She is a medium sized ship designed to act offensively in protection of the major units of the fleet against surface, air, or submarine attack. She has the necessary speed and stamina to stay up with a strike fleet or interpose herself betweenifriendly units and the enemy. She is able to use her weapons decisively against any enemy she encounters. She is ready and enthusiastic to perform any mission assigned no matter how mundane or seem- ingly unimportant. She has a small close knit crew who live in 'cramped quarters under difficult conditions and love it. A destroyer also operates with ap dash and spirit that cannot be found in any other type ship. A Bone In Her Teeth and White Water Under The Counter . Unfortunately most of our cruise has been spent on missions that appeared to be mun- dane and unimportant. Lengthy periods were spent screening the attack carriers on Yankee sta- tion while other destroyers were engaged in more exciting duties against the enemy. There were reasons for every assignment and our jobs though perhaps less exciting were none-the less as important. Destroyers had to remain with the attack carriers to protect them and assist them in many ways including aircraft crew rescue ifrequired. VVe did participate in six days of action providing naval gunfire support against the enemy and our battle' ensign flew proudly on those days. ' Our ship has remained ready for any assignment throughout the deployment because of the technical skill and devotion to duty of our officers and men who are her heart and soul. Our crew have worked long hours without complaint with their only' reward the .knowl- edge that a piece of equipment was fixed or that they were serving their country in the cause of liberty and peace. p VVe have proved the accuracy of our guns. The excellence of our communications' and ability of our CIC team to perform in any environment has been proven and recognized by the award of the green operations for excellence. Mfe have caught and held nuclear submarines wit-h our ASW team and been awarded the ASVV A for excellence. Our supply department has kept us in food and clothes and spare parts for our equipment. We have steamed at high speed in the wor1d's first and only nuclear task group and made less smoke than the jet air- craft. But at the risk of being prosaic - to the officers and men of the Epperson who make her go, for the many hardships overcome, for a truly professional performance that is second to none in the Destroyer Force - a heartfelt UATTA BOY! Our super XO never misses - well maybe once in a while - during small arms pracfice on the fanfail. - BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH LCDR LEHR was born in Britton, South Dakota on 5 February 1932. Although spending much of his life in the midwest, he currently claims Denver, Colorado as home. Graduated and commissioned through the regular NROTC program at the Univer- sity of Colorado, Boulder, in 19521, he spent his first thirty-six months of service on the San Diego based Radar Picket Destroyer USS DUNCAN QDDR-8745. During three West Pac deployments his primary duties included that of Engineer Cflicer. Leaving DUNCAN in June 1957 he assumed duties as an assistant professor of naval science at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. This tour was shortened as he was selected by Admiral Rickover for nuclear power training in March 1959. Now a Lieutenant, he trained at the advanced nuclear power school in New London, Connecticut, and the large ship reactor prototype near Idaho Falls, Idaho. Leaving the prototype in May 1960, LT LEHR jointed the commissioning crew of the nucl.ear powered aircraft carrier USS ENTERPRISE QCVA fNj65j and subsequently served thirty-three months as Main Propulsion Assistant, during which time the big E made two Mediter- ranean deployments and participated in naval operations in conjunction with the Cuban Crisis. Upon completion of his tour on ENTERPRISE he returned to Idaho as Engineer Oflicer of the prototype plant in which he trained three years earlier. Completing an ex- tended tour at the prototype and promoted to Lieutenant Commander, he received orders to the USS EPPERSON as Executive Officer and relieved Commander R. L. DODD in June 1966. ' ' LCDR LEHR is married to the former Carolyn McKibbin of Buffalo, New York and has five children, Bruce, Karen, Ellen, Mark, and Barbara. CO-EDS MAY BE FOUND ANY WHERE JAPAN On the eighth of December, the Epperson, a member of ASW fanti-submarine warfarey Group One, sailed into Yokosuka Bay to relieve the USS Cochrane QDDG-Zlj. While the ship was tied up along- side the pier, the yard workers accomplished a complete overhaul of our evaporators. The Ship Repair Facility came into being over a century ago and spawned a massive Japanese fleet. lt was important enough to be a primary target of the dramatic 1942 Halsey-Doolittle raid. It is now a vital base for the United States Seventh Fleet, the world's largest, and home to- three thousand serv- ice and civilian personnel. Six thousand Japanese are also employed there. The crew, knowing that our next mission would take us to Yankee Station fo-r 45 days, took full advantage of their liberty hours. Some went to the Navy Exchange to buy cameras, tape recorders and radios. An excellent selection of low priced merchandise was available. Some went to the EM. Club for relaxation, but the majority of the men went into town where the action wasg drinking, girls, danc- ing, girls, and more girls. The people of Japan are among the friendliest with which Epperson sailors have associated. The people in Yoko are friendly because they live and work with Naval Personnel. I The citizens of Tokyo are friendly in a different way. To them the sailor on liberty is someone 1nterested in seeing their country and learning of their way of life. In return they seek information about the people of America. On the eleventh of December we left Yokosuka and headed south. Marcos, declared recently, We are in Vietnam because we want to survive in Freedom. We have sent our men to contribute to the mission of peace in Vietnam and-because we want to encourage the continued presence of our ally, the U.S. in Asia, to the extent that this serves .our national interest. To understand the sincerity of this statement one must review the contribution made by the U.S. towards Philippine independence since the turn of the century. Spain ruled the Philippines for over three centuries, but her occupation was not always peaceful. Na- tionlism and opposition to Spanish rule spread through the islands. An attempt to quell the Philippine uprising by the execution of the famous Statesman, and patriot Dr. jose Rizal only added fuel to the fire. The U.S. in- tervened in 1898 and liberated the Filipinos from Spanish rule. Later that year, The Treaty of Paris was signed establishing U.S. sovereignty over the Philippines.. Beginning with the inauguration of William Howard Taft as the first civil governor of the Philippines, the U.S. faithfully followed the motto coined by Taft, The Philip- pines for the Filipinos . America acted for the benefit of the Filipino and promoted a gradual development of self-government to lead step-by-step to Philippine. independence. Extensive medical and health services wiped out cholera, checked small pox, reduced infant mortality by 602, and established hospitals all over the islands. During initial military occupation the educational system spread by leaps and bounds. In 1935 enrollment in Philippine high schools was 1,300,000 pupils. Today 4,000,000 students attend classes. American teachers, clergymen, businessmen, doctors and lawyers tried to better acquaint the Filipinos with the broader aspect of democracy and the American way of life. During World War II japanese occupation the Filipinos fought side by side with their American friends. On the memorable day, July 4, 1946, the Republic of the Philippines was born. Yet the traumatic experience Of japanese occupation shocked the Filipinos and convinced most that they alone could not guarantee future SC- curity for their Archipelago. I The result was a negotiation of agreement in 1947 whereby the U.S. was awarded military bases in return for assuming major burdens of external defense. Largest of these are the Clark AFB Stotsenburg Reservation l in Centra Luzon, the Subic Bay- Naval Base and adjacent Cubi Point NAS, and Sangley Point NAS at Cavite on the bay opposite Manila. In such a place is situated the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is unbelievable. It is right off the coast of Red China. The Communists could move in almost any time they wish, but they don't - and life goes on. a From the servicemenls point of view, the city has everythingg the World of Suzie Wong A Qand what a worldj, a bargain basement shopping center for luxury merchandise, and a flourishing ingenious industrial oasis. You nameit and Hong Kong has it - or soon will have. - Hong Kong is one of the most colorful places in the world. A short walk along the street will reveal more colors than the mind can imagine. The fascinating local architecture contrasts sharply with new Western style hotels. The city gives one the impression that a rainbow has burst upon it. A beautiful view of the harbor can be had by taking a ten minute ride up the Peak tramway. From this point one can see the harbor from more than a hundred different angles, and it is a breathtaking sight. Each day dozens of freighters andsome of the world's largest luxury liners enter the port of Hong Kong. It is one of the busiest ports in the world. Hundreds of sampans, junks, ferries and other types of vessels go in and out, back and forth. Some say that Hong Kong will never change, but it is changing with this modern world. Anyone who has ever been there will remember it as one of the most interesting places he has ever seen. We knew that the liberty would be good as soon as we learned that Taiwan's number one cartoon character was Popeye the sailor. 'Inside the harbor, the Ep- person tied. up alongside the destroyer tender, Piedmont. From our ship sailors used two unique means of transportation to reach the Sea Dragon Club. The water taxi, the proverbial slow boat to China, chugged, pitched, and rolled its way to the pier. SPS enjoyed the only privilege aboard the taxis, the fare was free. just beyond the pier, two sailors wishing to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the city, hopped into a pedicab. 15 minutes and 20 NT later, the sailors staggered out o-f the pedicab and proceeded into the Sea Dragon Club. Few of us will ever forget the Sea Dragon Club's floor shows and its music to suit all tastes. It's doubtful that you'll hear any of us admit it, but ther-e was scuttlebut that more than one of our mave- ricks lost his laundry money to the Club's one-arm bandits. A group of Epperson sailors delighted the barroom throng by tapping out a few impromptu dance steps. On the exotic streets of Kaohsiung, we faced typical Oriental commercialism. ' We all concurred that the Taiwanese were determined, business-minded people. A five year old salesgirl would hang on to one's pant leg for three blocks until the sailor gave in and bought a pack of Doublement chewing gum for 254. Familiar was the sound of Epperson mates, H400 NT, never 'hoppon', joe. With the price of brass so high in Taiwan and the presence of 300 liberty-loving sailors, our QMS made regular checks to insure that the helm was intact. The most inexpensive and fastest mode of transportation was the train, Because of the holiday the train was quite crowded. So the five of us were huddled in one corner next'to an open door. This position turned out to be to our advantage as it gave us an excellent opportunity to take pictures of the country side as we sped by. Along the route we observed factories, coal mines, construction sites, rock quarries, farm lands, fishing villages along small rivers, and many farm towns. Until recently most of Taiwan's industry was developed through United States' aid. Now Taiwan is becoming entirely se-lf-sufhcientg for example, the island is well on its way to becoming the world's largest exporter of canned goods. Upon entering the city limits of Taipei we could see the typical hustle and bustle of Chinese life- As we missed our intended stop, we had to continue into the heart of Taipei. Our destination, still some miles away, forced us to ride a rickety bus which would have been outlawed in a minute back home. The bus ride turned out to be an adventure in itself. This antique vehicle weaved its way through wave after wave of bicycles QTaipei's principal means of transportationj. Finally we arrived at one of Taipei's sull- urbs, where a good friend and ex-shipmate fLeej lives with his wife and family. He is presently- assigned to the Commsta at Taipei. Upon arrival at Lee's home we were greeted with a big welcome and a cold drink of San Miguel beef- After a fresh water wash down and a change into some comfortable clothes, we were ready to relax and talk over some old sea stories. When dinner was ready not one of us had to be asked twice. Dinner was enitvyed by all, for it was cooked in the best Japanese cuisine by Lee's wife, Toni. After dinner it was San Miguel time again and a chance for all to relax before the traditional Easter Egg hunt, The Easter Egg hunt was an all hands evolution. Lee's three children had some competition this year. Only 49 of 50 eggs were found and Lee's daughter, Kathy, swore Scroggins ate the missing one. Mile only had one night in Taipeig so we were going to make a GO of it with the little time we had left. VV e started off with a BANG by shooting off a bunch of fireworks with the children. Then we proceed- ed to the city lights where we commenced to participate in Taipei's nightlife. After VVine, Women, Song and Dance our little group travelled to Taipei's famous hot springs resort, Peitou . There we relaxed in steam baths, and very hot mineral baths. A vigorous rub-down followed. Later we took advantage of plush hotel accommodations. However, we realized that we had to get an early start for the ship in order to make 0730 muster. Consequently, reveille was held at 0430. A taxi drove us to Lee's home where bacon and eggs were being prepared by Toni, an understanding Navy wife. After a delicious breakfast Lee drove us back to the Epperson. It was five happy sailors who hated leaving good friends and a good time in TAIPEI. A dedicated sailor and proud of the uniform he wore, the Chief addressed his friends as Cuss and nicknamed the C.P.O. Club, Zoosvi1le. During his spare time the Chief collected coins and old guns, played pool and black jack. Once in a while, he'd take a ride on a motorcycle. Whitey could do a little soft shoe just about anytime. It has been said that he could eat more then any chief on board. Whitey was Ia happy-go- lucky man who enjoyed every thing he did. The Chief planned to retire in Dec., 1967. His ambi- tion was to go to Las Vegas and win a million dollars so that he could buy all his friends a Cadillac. , We shall remember Chief Tolle for his dedication to the Navy and the Epperson, for his de- termination to do a better job, and for his keeping morale at its peak. The Epperson proudly dedicates this 1966-1967 cruise book to Senior Chief Tolle, a small token of gratitude in remembrance of a Sailor who unselifishly served his ship and country. To WHITEY FROM THE CREW OF THE EPPERSON OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT ' so G A Q rr X 'll' T A l 5.3 The operations department consists of radarmen, electronics technicians, radiomen, quatermasters, signal- men, corpsmen, yeomen, personnelman, and the postal clerk, whose varied iobs range from navigation and medi- cine, to plain paper work. The department works hand in hand with all other departments to function as a highly efficient unit. Within the department, that same efficient teamwork holds true, as electronics technicians work on the gear that enable the radarmen and the radiomen to do their iob. The ship relies on operations for obtaining the position of the ship at all times, whether it is off the coast where the radarmen and quatermasters cut radar fixes or out in the middle of the ocean with nothing but blue water to the horizion. Communications is another important function the department provides. From the visual methods to the high- ly complex electronic radio sets, the 'signalmen and radiomen must provide a capability to communicate instant- aneously with other units and shore stations. The ability to maintain reliable communications is an important part of the readiness of a fighting ship such as the Epperson. Recently the department received the departmental excellence award as a tribute to the hard working profes- sional performance displayed by its men. This equipment includes, as indicated the Department name, all of the installed weapons and small arms, and also all of the deck gear. The mission of the Weapons Department implies training the personnel of the ship in the use of this equipment. The installed weapons of the Epperson include 5 X 38 gunmounts and the associated fire con- trol syst-ems, ASROC Qanti-submarine rocketj DASH fdestroyer anti-submarine helicopterj, torpedo tubes and sonar. In addition, the ship carries many small arms. The deck equipment consists of gear for replenishment-at-sea, mooring lines, anchors and their associated chains, liferafts, lifelines, and many other pieces of tackle. ' , There are approximately 85 men in' the Weapons Department who are assigned to three divi- sions. First Division is assigned the responsibility of maintaining the deck gear, all exterior spaces not specifically assigned to other divisions, and several interior spaces, it orders and issues cleaning gear, and paint for the ship, and is in charge of deck evolutions such as replenishment-at-sea, mooring, etc. Second Division is responsible for the gunnery systems, ammunition, and small arms. Third Divi- sion is responsible for all ASW Weapons and equipment. Another responsibility of the Weapons Department is the security of the ship. In this connec- tion the department sees to it that the necessary security watches are set, that the men assigned t0 these watches are issued the proper arms, and that they have been instructed and trained in the use of these arms. In the morning the deck force has little time to wipe the dust from their eyes for decks must be swept and swabbed and the brightwork polished. The men respond quickly and efliciently to every task under its competent leadership. ' First LT ENS. McGirr is responsible for the training, direction, and coordination of personnel .assigned to histdivision. The leading seamen teach new hands Diaz, Gorka, Greco, and Burch how to rig king posts and accommodation ladders, tie double becket bends, and paint bulkheads without leaving holidays . Veteran members Hudson, Pollari, Higden, Deibert, and Steiner help break in the new hands. I ' When there is a deadline to be met, one may find the duty section working well past taps. In spite of the late hours, paint on their bodies, and aching backs, few complaints are heard. First Divi- sion takes pride in doing any job assigned to them. The contributions made by First Division to- wards the preservation of the Eppersonfs exterior proves to all that the Seaman is the backbone of the Navy . A Machinist Mate's job is a never ending task of supplying the ship' with propulsion, electri- cal power, and fresh water, all of which are necessary in order for the ship to operate efficiently. An MM may usually be found working in the Engineroom. The englneroom is a maze of steam, water, and air lines, These lines transport steam from the boilers to the turbines that propel the ship. Steam sent to the ship's service turbo generator sup- plys the Epperson with electrical power. Steam is also sent to the evaporators, which convert sea water to fresh water through the process of evaporation and condensation. Feed water for the boilers andfresh water for the crew is an absolute must. The Machinist Mate's job is a demanding 24 hour chore with little glory. Despite the departure of Phillips and Schiveley in April, the BT's are not lacking inleadership. Chief Herren, the man in charge of B division, is easily recognized by his moustache. The Chief's forward lireroom leader is Don Walker, who is the happiest of all BT'S when on liberty. Doug Scroggins drifts about and becomes more and more concerned-about what he will do if he does not re-enlist in June. Supersnipe Somerville is the only Reserve BT who is proud of being a Reserve. Boff Bofferding is amazed that he successfully mad the switch from cruiser messcook to tincan steamer. Rounding out the forward fnreroom team are Jeff Beezely, Chicken Man Da- vison, Drifty Dickey Shelton, Rod Bishop, Daniel Boone, Remot control Dash, Hickory Davis, and Luke Lucas. A gang is as- signed responsibility for the cleanliness and maintenance of such spaces as the air conditioning machinery room, emergency diesel generator room and refrigerating machinery room. The men maintain and repair air compressors, emergency Fire pumps, boat engines, heating and cooling sys- tems, as well as laundry and galley machinery. All the men in A gang are well known through- out the ship. Our team of commissarymen and stewards work round the clock to provide varied and wholesome meals for 285 hungry sailors. Our ship's store and barbershop make a large contribu- tion toward keeping everyone well provided for and well groomed. -Our laundry works twenty- four hours a day doing 7000 pounds of laundry and pressing 500 pieces every week. Disbursing personnel handle Special pay, allotments, travel pay, and other services to ensure that our crew and their families are regularly and efficiently Supported. In support of the ship and its equipment, our storekeepers ride herd on a repair part inven- tory comprising 18,000 different items, all essential to the readiness and lighting capability of the ship. They also maintain the files and records necessary to order, issue, and document the expendi- tures of twenty thousand dollars every quarter. ' . Supply's work for the deployment began several months before we left Hawaii. Tons of re- pair parts, consumables, ship's store stock, laundry and barber supplies and of course food had to be packed into our fourteen storerooms. Throughout the cruise we have made use of unreps from AF'S, AKS, AOE'S, and even oilers as well as all port visits to keep our supplies HTOPPED OFF . Walsh, USN was born on 22 October 1921 in New York, N.Y., where he attended Cathedral Boys' School and Manhattan College prior to entering the U.S. Naval Acad- emy. He is a graduate of the Naval Academy, the Naval Postgraduate School, the Armed Forces Stall College and the National War College and holds the B.S. and M.S. degrees. Upon graduation from the Naval Academy in June 1943, Captain Walsh was ordered to USS NEVADA QBB 362 in which he served throughout the remainder of World War 11, participat- ing in the Invasions of Normandy, Southern France, Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
