EPPERSON QDDE 7191, U.S.S. RENSHAW QDDE 49911, U.S.S. PHILIP QDDE 4981, and the U.S.S. NICHOLAS QDDE 4491. In less than one year the Commodore's title was bestowed upon Captain C. T. FERGUSON who guided the division through the majority of our WestPac adventure. Toward the concluding months of our cruise Captain J. E. SMITH was ordered to command the division, and with him we completed another suc- cessful tour of duty in the Western Pacific. - I I E? at-1' , I . PLANK The men who have served aboard the EPPER- SON since she was first commissioned are few and far between having been aboard now for over 4 years. We call these men Hplankown- ers in the Navy and as such they deserve special mention for their long, faithful service toward making a ship what she is. Some of these men like Ray Nesselrode, Wil- liam Shoaf and Vincent Fay have come a long way since first setting foot aboard the Eppy and claiming one of her racks as his homef'. Ray worked his way up from log room yeo- man and mess cook toileading Petty Officer in the After Engineroom. Vince Fay once stood fireroom watches and oil king duties, and Bill Shoaf started as a boat crewman. Many of the new men aboard could well follow the example that these men have set in working their way up to first class petty officers with clean records. One of the friendliest men aboard the ship is R. L. Uackj Sykes. J ack to all his many friends, Sykes took his boot training in .luly 1930 and is today a great credit to both the OWNERS old and new navy, always ready to give a helping hand to anyone who would like to learn his trade. You say you are wondering where the EP- PERSON operated before being stationed at Pearl Harbor? Just ask Richard Duke Ne- ville or Travis Brock and they can tell you all about the shakedown ,cruise from Boston, Mass. to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Or maybe you would like to hear about the commission- ing in South Annex, Boston, Mass. at 1030, 19 March 1949. With a little needling maybe they will go on to tell you about all the girls they met while visiting Norfolk, Charleston, Tampa, Key West or New Orleans. If you are still interested in history, maybe Chief George Barnes or J im Mac McDuff can tell. you about the days when Cdr Terry', Conners or Philip Sherman occupied the cap- tain's cabin. ' - These are the men who have been aboard ship the longest and maybe feel they own a plank or two of the history that goes to make up the career of the U.S.S.
