Whether of a routine or urgent nature, the stacks of papers that constantly fill the boxes in the otlice affect most every operation of the ship and its men. From reports of exercises to transfer of men for reassignment, discharge or leave, the volume of work is great and keeps the yeo-yeo's busy during off duty hours as well as during uturn to hours. The ship's Secretary is also a busy man as Ens. Cillig 81 Bredenberg can tell you after having headed the office division. Visual navigation, radar navigation, radio communications, letter communications' and electronics maintenance are the five important phases covered by the divisions of the Opera- tions Department in carrying out its mission. On DIVISION I The five small divisions of the Uperations- De- partment handle the big tasks of communica- tions and navigation aboard ship. These divi- sions under the capable leadership of Lt. War- ren .I. Thomas are each responsible for one important phase of the communication and navigation missions of the department. The N division handles all visual naviga- tional aids. These- include charts, instruments, logs, and communications such as flag hoist, blinker light, and semaphore. With Chief i'Sciviewaver Martin in charge, the quarter- masters keep the charts from all over the Pacific up to date, ready for future use. Instruments must be kept in A-I condition and neatly stowed for instant use. One of the biggest jobs du-ring steaming operations is visual signaling. Notifying other ships in a fiorce of our intentions by flag hoist or blinker llgbt is an important part of the quarter- master signalman's work. .lust beneath the bridge lies the Combat In- formation Center, home of the radarrfllifl COmmonly called CIC Here, bent Over scopes and charting boards, skilled operators plot courses and targets through the medium of radar. This system of turning sound waves into -pictures of the landscape or seascape around usenable routine operation even when visibility is zero. Radar also enables the navigator to see farther away than would be possible by ordinary vision. Thus the im- portant function of CIC is Invisible Navi- gation '. In charge of CIC is Ilns. Cillig who was preceded by Ltjg. Cunningham, Ltjg. Koch and Ltjg. Conover in that order. The dit da of morse code and crackle of transmitters and receivers predominate in Radio Central, where Chief Schroder super- vises a busy crew. The main communication center of the ship, Radio Central, houses the net watchers or radiomen who receive and send messages relating to all phases of ship,S operations. Two Telemen attached to the divi- sion operate the Teletype machines, handle news copy for the ship's newspaper nlfppy- gram :and supervise postal services for the crew This Division was headed by Ltjg .
