Freezing weather in the Task 1 Force and the sweltering heat of the tropics have not taken any of the spirit out of the ' guys that get slammed about the fantail as the ship goes through the rapid maneuvers during ASW. Along with many other attri- butes, this group claims the ,distinction of owning the busiest coffee mess in T.F. Designated as an ASW vessel, the EZPPEB- SON has incorporated the latest methods and means of detecting, attacking and sinking any submarine afloat today. The Sonarmen falso called the 4'Ping-Jockeysnj are the vital ears of the fleet. The lives of the crew and val- uable property depend upon theiryability to gain and maintain 'contact on the undersea menace. This 9 man unit was guided by LUS- Briggs. The never ending task of keeping the gur1S and .ammunition readied at all times is the responsibility of the Gun Gang. Supervising this large group were Chiefs McNichols and Cillman, and Merv Coepfert, C-Ml. The Cun- ner's Mates were constantly hustling to keep the guns,in operating condition and at the same time keep the appearance of these weapons up to standard. Often times they would be working well into the night with the aid of a concealed lamp. Handling, stow- ing and accounting for each round of ammu- nition that came aboard proved to be a head- ache, but a necessary one. Each shell that went through their hands costs someone be- tween 335 to 3100. ln addition to these spe- cialized tasks-there were always miscella- neous duties to perform such as on the high- line, handling stores, and just about anything else someone couldn't handle alone. lt's no wonder they have a respected place in the Navy. -
