His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jonett B. EPPERSON, worked hard to raise their children and make ends meet during the slow dreary years of the depression which followed the post World War I boom. Like millions of other average American fami- lies who were beginning to know better times under the guidance of Franklin Roosevelt, the EPPERSONS were filled with anxiety and bewilderment at the mad whirl of war which followed in the wake of the 7th of December 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbor. After a year of the new war had passed, and the .American armies were still being de- feated on all fronts, Harold EPPERSON, who had by now reached the draft age, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves on 12 December 1942 in Cleveland, Ohio. When he was sent to Marine Corps Training at Camp Elliott, San Diego, California, his mother and father, little doubting but that their son would return home to them again, were only proud that their boy was able and willing to serve his country in the interests of freedom and world peace. , By 15 May 1943, however, Private EPPERSON was in the-field aiding the American forces in their campaign to ward off the Japanese offensive in the Pacific. On the 6th of f 1943 EPPERSON was promoted to Private First Class and in November of that year was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for his part in the i:'..,-.-v of the Gilbert Islands. V After receiving this honor, Pfc EPPERSON continued to do his part in the 'battle for the Pacific, until on 25 June 1944, during the invasion of the island of Saipan in the Marianas Islands, this gallant hero of the Asiatic Pacific Campaign gave his life on the battle scarred beach. I For his meritorious service in the Battle of Saipan, Private First Class Harold Glenn EPPERSON was awarded posthumously the M citation: ' EDAL OF HONOR with the following 'IF or conspicuous gallantry -and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving with the First Battalion, Sixth Marines, Second Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese Forces on the Island of Saipan in the l Marianas on 25 June 1944. With his machine-gun emplacement bearing the ful 7 brunt of a fanatic assault initiated by the Japanese under cover of pre-dawn darkg ness, Private First Class Epperson 'manned his weapon with determined aggressive- ness, fighting furiously in defense of his battalioifs position and maintaining a , . . . - stead stream of 'devastating fire against rapidly infiltrating hostile troops to ai ma- Y . terially in annihilating several of the enemy and in breaking the abortive attack. f Ta- .1 9 - I' Q 'il 1I I I 1 I I 1 I II ,I I I 11' I 1 I I 1 1 Il LII I II I I 1 I 1 1 A 1 I 1.1 I , . Determined to save his comrades, Private First Class Epperson unhesitatingly chose to sacrifice himself and, diving upon the deadly missile, absorbed the shattering violence of the exploding charge in his own body. Stout-hearted and indomitable in: the face of certain death, Private First Class Epper- son fearlessly yielded his own life that his able comrades might carry on the relentless battle against a ruthless enemy, and his superb valor and unfaltering devotion to duty throughout reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. .i..1. MEMORIAL T0 A HERO The building of the United States Ship EPPERSON was awarded originally to the Fed- eral Ship building' and Drydock Company in Kearny, New Jersey, for construction during World War 11. On the 20th of June 1945 her keel was laid at that yard, from which was to spring one of the first DDE typeships in the U.S. Navy. ' On 22 December of the same year the ship was launched in an incomplete condition and the hull, mothballed andwith many large items of equippage stowed aboard in crates, w., ',.', gcred to the New York Naval Shipyard. H ln December of the following year, 1946, Bath .Iron Works Corporation was awarded the contract for completion of the vessel, however, with many changes in armament and equipment which distinguishes the ship as a DDE as compared to the normal 692 class destroyer for which it had originally been intended. After much delay, while new plans were drawn up and discussed, the ship was finally delivered, complete, to Boston Naval Shipyard on 18 March 1949. . The day after arriving at Boston the U.S.S. EPPERSON QDDE 7191 was commissioned with Commander Terrill H. W. CONNOR the first commanding officer. 1 V Operating on the East Coast of 'the United States, the vessel underwent extensive sea trials and ship alterations which must follow the commission of all new vessels of the fleet. The U.S.S. EPPERSON, with its sister ship the U.S.S. BASILONE fDDE 8241 was the first ship of its type to have been built. It is primarily designed for ASW escort duties, having the most modern submarine detection devices, weapons and ASW battery fire control equipment. H ' What more fitting monument than this could be made to the undying spiritof a gallant warrior of the U.S. Marine Corps. 1 n ' 4 1.1. EPPERSON since 15 November 1951, has spent the majority of his life learn- ing the trade of a sea going man. Even in his youth, Charles Mead labored in lighthouses and bay freighters in Frisco Bay. Later he became a quartermaster with the American Hawaiian Steamship lines and in 1932 received a masters license of Oceans Unlimited. Having thus proved his skill as a sailor, he rose fast in his trade and became 3rd mate in 1936. V ln 1940, Mead, a naval reservist, was called to 'active duty and became a division oflicer aboard the U.S.S. PLATTE QAO 241. . During the early stages of World War II he was assigned first in New Caledonia and later' in New Zealand as port director. In 1945,'after serving as Executive Oflicer aboard the U.S.S. LEO QAKA 601, he assumed command of that ship and in July of that year was promoted to full commanc- 'he regular navy. In July of 1947, after Commander Mead had served for eight months aboard the U.S.S. BUTNER fAP113J, he was sent to General Line School and the Naval'War College graduating from the college on 13 May 1949. i From here he went to Washington, D.C. to serve as a member of the Joint Intelligence Group of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. It was during this tour of duty that Cdr. Mead and Nancy Butte were wed on 19 December 1950. q . 1 Since relieving Cdr. .Philip Sherman as skipper of the Epperson, Captain Mead has proven that his years of experience were not in vain. His capability as a leader and captain make us proud to say This is our Captain . ' t 4 1 1 -P i O li 1 1 4 1 A 1 x l 9? ,4 VV!- :A 1,1 I 1 W 1 XG'1 1F 'J ww , 1 -,-..1111.. . - ' 1 'I ,.- - ,-. As is true with most sailors, these men were growing tired of stayingin one spot for so long. They were anxious to be moving on to other ports in other lands. V I Thus it was with great anticipation that the crews looked forward to the day when Escort Destroyer Division TWELVE set ,courses for the western Pacific.. Sure, it would mean hard work: tiresome, cold, wet watches on the guns and bridge, possible battle damage, endless days of steaming without touching land-but these things didn't matter. The thing that counted was that they would be moving on over new horizons, through new experiences. s- Q1 f'fl,-,,y3- Q 5 . ---a.,,,ci,,,,5-533 iii f.,,, . lid '-fx A ' ff .fa ' if sf' 1 Q ss. if - 2 ly' igwqryp-gui., A , 'Li1-Plxiqlv H4500 fa, fi N Q v' 'wg ' gs-11.2. The ship, steaming darkened, showed nary a light For who knows what may prowl on the ocean at night? cs - , But the radars were blip-less, the horizon was clear, And the OD was certain, no bogies were near, When Combat reported that something was wrong, From the business-like ANf ARC there came a faint song. Men looked at each other-this really was queer. They'd have sworn they heard Jingle Bellsn, faint but quite clear. The CO answered, Nonsense, go call an ET. I know it soundsipr-etry, but it just couldn't Belw But it wasn't just nonsense, and the music poured forth. Then Combat reported, Air contact-due Northf' ltls closing us fast, it must be a jet. T 1 So the ship was alerted,Ceneral Quarters was set. Men leaped from their bunks and the guns quickly manned. And a Gunner's Mate growled, Now ain,t this just grand! 79 Christmas Eve at CQ, and we're miles out at sea. Last year at this time, 'I was trimming the tree! 77 The contact came .closer as the seconds ticked by. And the stars shone down brightly against the black sky. Nearer and nearer. The guns were all laid. The next moment the contact was lost in a fade. ' He's on us, cried Combat, then a lookout yelled, 6'Hey! You may think I'm nuts, but it looks like a sleigh! And believeiit or not, by CruDesPac direction, It was Admiral Claus on his annual inspection. He delivered his presents and inspected the crew, Then we all gathered 'round to see what he would do. The plane guard was stationed, he saluted the Skipper, Then his sleigh zoomed aloft, headed straight for the diPPef' And we heard him exclaim as he shot f1'0m his landing, P, O ALL-AND YOUR SHIP IS OUTSTANDING. EPPERSON REPEATS AS ATHLETIC LEADER The Escort Destroyer U.S.S. EPPERSON DDE f 719, was the winner of the Cruiser- Destroyer Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Athletic Excellence Perpetual Trophy in the destroyer class competition for the second consecutive year. The runner-up indestroyer competi- tion for 1952 was another member of CortDes Div TWELVE, the U.S.S. NICHOLAS QDDE 4491. p A 1 i Points for the trophy were awarded in basketball, softball, bowling and intra-mural play. The Warheads , Epperson's Cagers, ran up a sensational season during the cruise play- ing games at any opportunity in Japan and Formosa. The season was highlighted by a tie game in Kaohsuing in accordance with Chinese rules. An intra-mural tournament held on' Okinawa uncovered outstanding talent to form a ship's softball team. The intra-mural crown was won by the undefeated second division, by disposing of the c'O',, HS , E and D divisions. Softball practice started in Sase- bo, Japan and gave indications of repeating another outstanding softball season. Cur- rently, the Eppy and the U.S.S. PHILIP are tied for first place in CortDesDiv 12 com- petition. ' The Epperson has followed the policy of accepting contests against any and all comers, and has concentrated her efforts in two major sports-basketball and softball. The re- sults have indicated that their efforts have not been in vain. V I 04-A-ul-can-.,-. -.-A.v...c.r... w- -v V. Freezing weather in the Task 1 Force and the sweltering heat of the tropics have not taken any of the spirit out of the ' guys that get slammed about the fantail as the ship goes through the rapid maneuvers during ASW. Along with many other attri- butes, this group claims the ,distinction of owning the busiest coffee mess in T.F. Designated as an ASW vessel, the EZPPEB- SON has incorporated the latest methods and means of detecting, attacking and sinking any submarine afloat today. The Sonarmen falso called the 4'Ping-Jockeysnj are the vital ears of the fleet. The lives of the crew and val- uable property depend upon theiryability to gain and maintain 'contact on the undersea menace. This 9 man unit was guided by LUS- Briggs. The never ending task of keeping the gur1S and .ammunition readied at all times is the responsibility of the Gun Gang. Supervising this large group were Chiefs McNichols and Cillman, and Merv Coepfert, C-Ml. The Cun- ner's Mates were constantly hustling to keep the guns,in operating condition and at the same time keep the appearance of these weapons up to standard. Often times they would be working well into the night with the aid of a concealed lamp. Handling, stow- ing and accounting for each round of ammu- nition that came aboard proved to be a head- ache, but a necessary one. Each shell that went through their hands costs someone be- tween 335 to 3100. ln addition to these spe- cialized tasks-there were always miscella- neous duties to perform such as on the high- line, handling stores, and just about anything else someone couldn't handle alone. lt's no wonder they have a respected place in the Navy. - I? .-, 'haf l z:.:.:f'f . On DIVISION I The five small divisions of the Uperations- De- partment handle the big tasks of communica- tions and navigation aboard ship. These divi- sions under the capable leadership of Lt. War- ren .I. Thomas are each responsible for one important phase of the communication and navigation missions of the department. The N division handles all visual naviga- tional aids. These- include charts, instruments, logs, and communications such as flag hoist, blinker light, and semaphore. With Chief i'Sciviewaver Martin in charge, the quarter- masters keep the charts from all over the Pacific up to date, ready for future use. Instruments must be kept in A-I condition and neatly stowed for instant use. One of the biggest jobs du-ring steaming operations is visual signaling. Notifying other ships in a fiorce of our intentions by flag hoist or blinker llgbt is an important part of the quarter- master signalman's work. .lust beneath the bridge lies the Combat In- formation Center, home of the radarrfllifl COmmonly called CIC Here, bent Over scopes and charting boards, skilled operators plot courses and targets through the medium of radar. This system of turning sound waves into -pictures of the landscape or seascape around usenable routine operation even when visibility is zero. Radar also enables the navigator to see farther away than would be possible by ordinary vision. Thus the im- portant function of CIC is Invisible Navi- gation '. In charge of CIC is Ilns. Cillig who was preceded by Ltjg. Cunningham, Ltjg. Koch and Ltjg. Conover in that order. The dit da of morse code and crackle of transmitters and receivers predominate in Radio Central, where Chief Schroder super- vises a busy crew. The main communication center of the ship, Radio Central, houses the net watchers or radiomen who receive and send messages relating to all phases of ship,S operations. Two Telemen attached to the divi- sion operate the Teletype machines, handle news copy for the ship's newspaper nlfppy- gram :and supervise postal services for the crew This Division was headed by Ltjg . The safety and ethciency of the ship, and its fighting potential depend- to a large ex- tent on the operating condition of the elec- tronics equipment in CIC and Radio Central. ln order to keep the various transmitters and receivers in proper working order the eight electonics technicians work full time at their trade. Not counted above but part of HS Division temporarily are those crew members who have served as Mess Cooks. Their job is probably little appreciated but a big one: they helped to make those Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners the memorable events they were. The MN Gang under Chief Branson does the work in theiEngine rooms. They take care of the pumps, water supply, air conditioning and other units located in the Engine rooms. The i'Water Kingv is a title bestowed upon one of the members of the HM Division. The AW Gang, under the direction of Chief Davenport, is responsible for the auxiliary gear, water pumps, heating system, f00d freezer and the ice cream machine-all of which is located outside of the Engine r0OmS- From the ranks of the A Gang are the RING DEPARTMENT engineers to the motor whaleboats. Though their responsibilities differ, both rat- ings stand their watches in the Engine rooms. Oftentimes an EM is rousted out of his rack at some ungodly hour to work on a power failure, and finds out more often than not that his shipmate has been fumbling around with the wrong switch. The real pet peeve of this twelve hand working party is to be called away to some far corner of the ship to tighten a lightbulb. We call these men Hplankown- ers in the Navy and as such they deserve special mention for their long, faithful service toward making a ship what she is. Some of these men like Ray Nesselrode, Wil- liam Shoaf and Vincent Fay have come a long way since first setting foot aboard the Eppy and claiming one of her racks as his homef'. Ray worked his way up from log room yeo- man and mess cook toileading Petty Officer in the After Engineroom. Vince Fay once stood fireroom watches and oil king duties, and Bill Shoaf started as a boat crewman. Many of the new men aboard could well follow the example that these men have set in working their way up to first class petty officers with clean records. One of the friendliest men aboard the ship is R. L. Uackj Sykes. J ack to all his many friends, Sykes took his boot training in .luly 1930 and is today a great credit to both the OWNERS old and new navy, always ready to give a helping hand to anyone who would like to learn his trade. You say you are wondering where the EP- PERSON operated before being stationed at Pearl Harbor? Just ask Richard Duke Ne- ville or Travis Brock and they can tell you all about the shakedown ,cruise from Boston, Mass. to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Or maybe you would like to hear about the commission- ing in South Annex, Boston, Mass. at 1030, 19 March 1949. With a little needling maybe they will go on to tell you about all the girls they met while visiting Norfolk, Charleston, Tampa, Key West or New Orleans. If you are still interested in history, maybe Chief George Barnes or J im Mac McDuff can tell. you about the days when Cdr Terry', Conners or Philip Sherman occupied the cap- tain's cabin. ' - These are the men who have been aboard ship the longest and maybe feel they own a plank or two of the history that goes to make up the career of the U.S.S.
