Megan Allday Lecture Series The speaker of the Megan Girard All- day Lecture Series this year was the world renown Mr. Richard Leaky. Mr. Leaky is one of the foremost an- thropologists in the world, and he shared with our school some of his most famous and most recent findings from the African continent. Many upper school and middle school students read his latest book, Origins, in preparation for his awaited talk. After a most informative and yet understandable lec- ture on his findings and activities, Mr. Leaky spoke with a group of students on more specific topics of his work and achievements. It was indeed a great honor to have Mr. Leaky as the 1985 Megan Girard Allday Lecture Series speaker. The Appletons gave a 50,000 endowment to the school for this lecture series in honor of 1983 graduate from Episcopal, Megan Girard Allday. Through this lecture series, the school may obtain such great speakers as Mr. Leaky to enrich and broaden the minds of its students and its faculty. 167

Ioan Aiken Librarian, Michelle Randall, arranged for the Episcopal School Library to sponsor a visit and lecture from Ioan Aiken, a well- known children's author. Mrs. Aiken talked to the students of Episcopal about her works and how she got started writing. She also disclosed the habit of writing thoughts or strange events down in a handy writer's notebook as one of her more important techniques for Writing. And although her ap- proach to writing was seemingly old- fashioned, it was nonetheless quite appealing to the young audience of students. Some mid- dle school students met with Mrs. Aiken in the library after the assembly for refreshments and more talk of her works. The gathering was a delightful exposure to one of the many realms of modern day literature. e- F? l A : NN, - . .. .

The Eighth Crade Class by Scott Kimball In Washington, the students visited the Capitol Building and met Congressman Bartlett. They took a tour of the FBI Building, in which the highlight for the girls was meeting a Special Agent who had been in a video with Duran Duran. We spent a couple of hours in the American History Museum, took a tour of the White House, met Sam Donaldson, who is the ABC News White House correspondent, visited the Air and Space Museum, went to Arlington National Cemetery where everyone was moved by the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as the Ken- nedy gravesite. We visited Ford's Theatre, had a wonderful catered dinner in the home of Tara Bailey's grandmother, where we met Margaret Heckler, the Secretary of Health and Human Services. We took in the Lincoln Memorial, Iefferson Memorial, and the Viet- nam Memorial, which was quite awesome. We also at- tended church at the National Cathedral. In Williamsburg, we took two different tours of the Colonial town. It was quite interesting for the kids, learning how the folks used to live in the 16 and 1700's. In all, the trip lasted 5 days and a good time was had by all. THE END Visits the Capitol
