Classical Indian Dance Performance Through the generous fun- ding and arrangements of Mr. Iames M. Gillentine Ir., a classical Indian dance per- formance was brought to Episcopal and its students. It was indeed a very special oc- casion in student life. On Tuesday, March 5, Indian dancer, Swati Bhise, per- formed a very moving and exacting dance. Through this by Swati Bhise dance performance, students learned of the different cultural and spiritual background of the Indian culture. The dance was divided into five sections starting off with Alarippu and ending with Tillana. Disciplined body and hand expressions were used throughout the dance to relay a legend, mood, or simply the 35, classical forms of this dance. Swati Bhise explained all the intricate movements of her dance and their significance. The performance was definitely a journey into the unknown and unseen, a galaxy away from the usual patrons of the students' musical and dance prefer- ences. Ioan Aiken Librarian, Michelle Randall, arranged for the Episcopal School Library to sponsor a visit and lecture from Ioan Aiken, a well- known children's author. Mrs. Aiken talked to the students of Episcopal about her works and how she got started writing. She also disclosed the habit of writing thoughts or strange events down in a handy writer's notebook as one of her more important techniques for Writing. And although her ap- proach to writing was seemingly old- fashioned, it was nonetheless quite appealing to the young audience of students. Some mid- dle school students met with Mrs. Aiken in the library after the assembly for refreshments and more talk of her works. The gathering was a delightful exposure to one of the many realms of modern day literature. e- F? l A : NN, - . .. .
