il 1 x v 1 9 ii 5 3 3? ,-kyix L-N. W I I 1 5 1 Eleven years ago The Episcopal School of Dallas was just a dream. Eight men discussed the idea of for- ming a co-educational, private school built on the basis of scholar- ly thought, spiritual growth, and discipline of the mind and body. A few months later that dream became a reality, and in 1985 that reality is 423 students, grades five through twelve. The school has gone through many changes since the fall of 1974, when it boasted only eight students. Certain traditions that the school was founded on still exist, even after these eleven years. A family atmosphere has always been em- phasized at the school, and even though 423 students make a rather large family, this tradition is still prevalent in the life of the school V W fig., Y E ' 3 RFQ g 5 X 3 Ad. 3 X l V if 33: s i ' X' . if , ' ' Y- , my 5 Q-. .V .- -n he Q 5 ,pgg ' . g 13 A C , if 'T .3 .- ' There are several things which bring the students together as a family. The Commons is a central part of the school building where many gather in the morning. It is an integral part of student life and is used for everything from a lunchroom to an auditorium. The students also are able to come together every Wednesday morning for an all-school Eucharist. The Wilderness Program is a unique feature of the school which enables students and teachers to get to know one another in a more relaxed at- mosphere, away from the pressures of school. Many relationships have been formed and repaired on these trips. Special relationships have also been formed between fifth graders and Seniors each year when they come together to do a special community project at Christmas. The Episcopal School of Dallas is a special institution, and as it becomes larger, more people will realize how special it is. As the school's population increases, some of the old traditions may be altered or set aside in order to accomodate the needs of a growing school. The basic tenets that the school was founded on, however, will remain constant. 'Q if , Y 1 . V H V 7 Q' ffr. e N an-T . . 4 ? . These memories will be shared by no other graduating class that follows. Many seniors have been together since 1979. This was this the year in which the school moved from Lovers Lane to the building on Merrell and Midway, which was actually a gymnasium. Memories of life at Lovers Lane are still fresh in the minds of some Seniors. Those were the days when the girls and the boys changed in the refectoryfdressing roomflunch- room with only a partition to separate them. A few seniors can claim to have served on the in- famous scunge patrol whose du- ty was to clean up the refectory. Recalling the day that over 100 students had to be carpooled back to Lovers Lane in one van from Walnut Hill Recreation Center because the bus broke down may cause a few seniors to laugh to QV themselves, even five yers later. Only nine seniors remember the days at Lovers Lane, but these nine have spread the sentiment to the rest of the class. The majority of the class will recollect things from later years, such as the last trip to Big Bend or more recently, the day that six fire engines and two police cars showed up at the school in order to put out a small fire. Seven seniors came to Episcopal just this year, but in that short time, they have become a part of the special personality of the Class of 1985. These seniors, as well as those who have been at Episcopal for two or more years, will have their own memories which they will recall with fondness in the years follow- ing graduation. The Senior- sponsored Halloween Dance was a big success, and prizes were given to Trish Freedman and lim Gillen- tine for best costumes. The Seniors also sold poinsettias at Christmas and carnations on Valentines Day. Much attention was devoted to community service this year. Com- munity projects not only included the traditional project with the fifth grade. but also an ongoing project at Scottish Rite Hospital. Another activity that the seniors sponsored was a breakfast for the faculty in appreciation for their hard work throughout this year, The annual Senior Talent Show proved to be an interesting and humorous event, as it is every year. As each new class sets into Episcopal, not only does the family grow larger, but an abundance of new and modern ideas begin to transform the at- mosphere into a life in which the underclassmen can adapt. The underclassmen thus play a major role in the daily events or the school. Each student contributes to the school as an individual and also as a member of his particular class. These determined students are all setting traditions as well as following those set by previous classes In a young school these underclassmen have a great respon sibihty in making the school and its reputa n the finest in Dallas e underclassmen may also engoy the new facilities and benefits of a growing school if Fa t it V M- ' Qwelsii eleventh eleventh eleventh eleventh eleventh elf-2V P - Brannon Brewer, V.-Pres. - Almle Merrltt. The guest speaker for the occasion was Mary Vernon who spoke on the topic of art and youthful goals. Recognition in this assembly went to those persons who excelled in the academic, spiritual, and extracurricular activities of the school. This year many new awards were in- stigated by various Dallas Clubs and organizations. Among these were the Smith, Sewanee, and Yale awards given by the respective alumni. The hard work and contributions the students had made during the year appeared to have paid off. Each year the assembly grows larger and incorporates more into its program as do the awardees and those involved. The 1984-85 Student Council had a productive year under the leadership of Mike Freed- man and sponsors Ioanne Iones and Tom Stearns. During the year the student council sold burritos once a week and sponsored a studentffaculty basketball game. Part of the money raised was used to put on a successful Christmas dance. The big project this year was the carnival. Members of the Student Council worked hard for several months in advance in preparation for the carnival. PGST PARTY PICKUP Post Party Pickup is a student organization run by students for students. The schools involved in this voluntary program include Episcopal, St. Mark's, Hockaday, and Greenhill. The main pur- pose of the organization is to prevent drunk driving and especially accidents. Students volunteer their time for once a month to be on call for pickup services. Anyone who felt as though they had too much to drink to drive home or did not want to ride with someone who had could call into the hotline and get a free ride home. Not only was the ride free but nothing was said to parents or anyone else. The operation was just a safe ride home. Meetings for cooperation of students from our school were held at Danny Sikora's house. Many students volunteered for this most valiant cause. wH1z Quiz The Whiz Quiz team this year performed its usual activities with vigor and persistence. It held bake sales the majority of the year to raise funds for its activities. The team also met every Friday morning at which meetings they prac- ticed on answering quick questions. At their on- ly but magnanimous showing, the team defeated its opponent quite decidedly. The Whiz Quiz kiddos for the 1984-85 year were: leannie DeArmond, Allison Loudermilk, Elizabeth Massey, Susie DeArmond, and Lisa Nigrelle. Mrs. Fomby was, of course, the very patient sponsor. . . The leading parts were done by drama and choir members: Mary Elizabeth McCracken, Kenneth Goodwin, Margee Hocking, Paige McCoy, Iennifer Williams, Elizabeth Massey, and Kelly Crawford. Mrs. Biewenga and Mrs. Thorton directed and pro- duced the show. Although a cast of only eight members, the production was a fantastic success. 1' I ,f .- I ., iff? 5, ve: 'lf' h , K 'i f ,ff-Q' QR? Gillentine Ir., a classical Indian dance per- formance was brought to Episcopal and its students. It was indeed a very special oc- casion in student life. On Tuesday, March 5, Indian dancer, Swati Bhise, per- formed a very moving and exacting dance. Through this by Swati Bhise dance performance, students learned of the different cultural and spiritual background of the Indian culture. The dance was divided into five sections starting off with Alarippu and ending with Tillana. Disciplined body and hand expressions were used throughout the dance to relay a legend, mood, or simply the 35, classical forms of this dance. Swati Bhise explained all the intricate movements of her dance and their significance. The performance was definitely a journey into the unknown and unseen, a galaxy away from the usual patrons of the students' musical and dance prefer- ences. I i , -Si Swati Bhise performs the Classical Indian Dance. Sarah Boardman, Swati Bhise, and Iim Gillentine Ioan Aiken Librarian, Michelle Randall, arranged for the Episcopal School Library to sponsor a visit and lecture from Ioan Aiken, a well- known children's author. Mrs. Aiken talked to the students of Episcopal about her works and how she got started writing. She also disclosed the habit of writing thoughts or strange events down in a handy writer's notebook as one of her more important techniques for Writing. And although her ap- proach to writing was seemingly old- fashioned, it was nonetheless quite appealing to the young audience of students. Some mid- dle school students met with Mrs. Aiken in the library after the assembly for refreshments and more talk of her works. The gathering was a delightful exposure to one of the many realms of modern day literature. e- F? l A : NN, - . .. . Megan Allday Lecture Series The speaker of the Megan Girard All- day Lecture Series this year was the world renown Mr. Richard Leaky. Mr. Leaky is one of the foremost an- thropologists in the world, and he shared with our school some of his most famous and most recent findings from the African continent. Many upper school and middle school students read his latest book, Origins, in preparation for his awaited talk. After a most informative and yet understandable lec- ture on his findings and activities, Mr. Leaky spoke with a group of students on more specific topics of his work and achievements. It was indeed a great honor to have Mr. Leaky as the 1985 Megan Girard Allday Lecture Series speaker. The Appletons gave a 50,000 endowment to the school for this lecture series in honor of 1983 graduate from Episcopal, Megan Girard Allday. Through this lecture series, the school may obtain such great speakers as Mr. Leaky to enrich and broaden the minds of its students and its faculty. 167 The Eighth Crade Class by Scott Kimball In Washington, the students visited the Capitol Building and met Congressman Bartlett. They took a tour of the FBI Building, in which the highlight for the girls was meeting a Special Agent who had been in a video with Duran Duran. We spent a couple of hours in the American History Museum, took a tour of the White House, met Sam Donaldson, who is the ABC News White House correspondent, visited the Air and Space Museum, went to Arlington National Cemetery where everyone was moved by the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as the Ken- nedy gravesite. We visited Ford's Theatre, had a wonderful catered dinner in the home of Tara Bailey's grandmother, where we met Margaret Heckler, the Secretary of Health and Human Services. We took in the Lincoln Memorial, Iefferson Memorial, and the Viet- nam Memorial, which was quite awesome. We also at- tended church at the National Cathedral. In Williamsburg, we took two different tours of the Colonial town. It was quite interesting for the kids, learning how the folks used to live in the 16 and 1700's. In all, the trip lasted 5 days and a good time was had by all. THE END Visits the Capitol Middle School Christmas Project The Middle School Christmas project came to a close on December 18, when the class officers from all Middle School grades went to St. Phillip's Episcopal Day School in South Dallas. There we met and had lunch with the four families and eight children to whom we had brought our gifts and food. We were - thanks to the incredible efforts of the students, school families and staff - able to raise more than S2000! When all had been said and done, there was about S300 left in the account and we are forwarding the amount to Mrs. Gwen Chance, Director of St. Phillip's, to be used as she sees fit in the further ministry to the school's children. Each child received new shoes, socks, jeans, shirt, sweater, winter jacket and hat - and an abundant amount of toys, large and small. In addition, each family unit received a boxed, cooked Christmas turkey dinner and a very large supply of canned goods and other foods. We want, finally, to express - to all those who helped - the largest possible THANK YOU. You made the pro- gram possible, and we are most appreciative. THE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL HOL 1, 1 reef-rf :lil T firming 169 7th Graders at St. Albans International Youth Festival Once again, during spring break and Easter week, Mr. and Mrs. Gill took six seventh graders to the annual International Youth Festival held in St. Albans Abbey, England. The festival was attended by young people from England, Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, and USA. The group en- joyed spending time sightseeing in London, shopping in Harrods, and participating in the drama, art, and poetry workshops held in the mornings at the festival, As part of the evening activities, the group took part in talent shows and concerts and went swimming and danc- ing. Making new friends, learning more about other cultures, and en- joying the beauty of England and its people were the highlights of the trip. The students who attended were: Scott Horowitz, Preston Herold, Petri Bill, Ed Brown, Iason Gilliam, and Ioel Waters. En' , A , 170 Lessons and Carols The Lessons and Carols ceremony this year was held again in the commons under the huge Christmas tree. An aura of joy and Christmas spirit filled the room as the last day of classes before the holiday came to an end. And the service was held in its usual spirit of vigor. The Lay Readers for the ceremony included representatives from the middle school, upper school, and the Board of Directors. The officiants of the ceremony were Fr. Swann and Fr. Altman. The mid- dle school and upper school choirs, led by Mary lane Thorton and Christine Cox respectively, sang many traditional and modern carols throughout the service. ess. WJ? I missed the pit of the high jump at a track meet. In the beginning, the Episcopal School had vir- tually no equipment or athletic facilities. Im- aginative sporting was prevalent at Lovers Lane. While schooling in the gym, there were rockbeds for outdoor activities and van transportation to the Walnut Hill gym for indoor activities. The practic- ing of volleyball in the school parking lot was the epitome of our destitution in facilities and equip- ment. Yet, the Episcopal spirit prevailed in a kamikaze of hope that one day in the near future, there would be a winning Episcopal team that, yes, actually did practice on a native field or court.
