Classic Classics: ittazurek, frmclts, Hill Department this year was to prepare for this new state requirement. Another goal of the Latin Department was to prepare students for competition at the Latin club convention held annually. This year the convention will be held March 17-19 in Alexandria, La. Competitions in Latin history, mythology, grammer, and oratory skills will take place between Latin The Latin Department has bloomed over the past four years. In 1983, when Dr. Nill first came to Episcopal, the Latin program was almost nonex-istant. It currently has over 100 students, most of which are in the middle school. Beginning next year, all seventh graders will be required to take a full year of Latin. One of the goals for the Latin clubs from all over. An awards ceremony, banquet, and sports day will also he part of the fun. Dr. Nill, head of the Latin Dept, enjoys teaching Latin because of the excitement of seeing students cope with a kind of language they've never seen before. It contradicts many of the things they've learned in English class such as the structure of a sentence. He finds that influencing students into memorizing the forms and grammer is one of the most challenging areas of his work. Mr. Ted Mazurek and newcomer Mr. Karl Frerichs, also Latin teachers, share the same goals as Dr. Nill.
