Senior Becky Shirley searches for a movie title on the computer for a Show Biz Video customer. Korkina for R lining Ithough getting all the homework 31 done and all the papers written can prove to be a difficult task, many students still find time to hold a job. Some students, such as seniors Lori Piper and Lisa Allen even manage to hold two jobs. Lori has worked at Baskin Robbins on Jefferson for almost three years now. I only work once a week now, she said. This is because she also works at a local law firm for two hours every day after school. Even though she has two jobs, Lori still finds time to do her schoolwork. I have to stay up late sometimes, she said, but at least I get my homework done. As for free time, she has a little, but not much. Lack of free time, though, isn't a big problem for Lori. Everybody wants more free time, she said, but I like working. It's pretty fun. Lisa Allen also has two jobs: Two days a week, you can find her at Zack's, and three days a week, she works at Super Fashions on Florida Blvd. The two jobs together add up to about twenty hours of work a week for Lisa. I work mostly on weekends, she said, so I just have to work around the jobs to do my homework. It's kind of hard, but I get it done. About holding two jobs while managing school, she said, It makes me more responsible. It makes me more aware of things like being places on time. Having two jobs makes you more disciplined to try to get all those things done. At Show Biz Video on Jones Creek Road, one can probably find senior Michelle Woodham working. Michelle works about twelve to twenty hours a week. In addition to that, she does a little moonlighting, babysitting from time to time. I think that working has taught me a lot of responsibility about money, she said, It's different when you don't have to rely on Mom and Dad. Also, she said, You learn to budget your time. As for homework, you just have to allot time for it. When asked if she enjoyed her job, Michelle answered, Definitely. I like the people I work with. One of those people is classmate Becky Shirley. Usually, I work about ten to eighteen hours a week, said Becky, who got her job in early February, 1988. She is saving her money to go back to England this summer. As a junior, Becky went to England as an exchange student. Even though school and work take up some time, Becky finds that, I still have a lot of free time. 1 work a lot on weekends and that cuts out on my social life some, but that's okay because I can go out afterwards. The students interviewed agreed that having a job while in high school as very beneficial in preparing for the future. Senior Chris King, a determined young man, averaged 42 hours a week at Fast Track to pay his EHS tuition. Chris began working a daily six hour shift after school and weekends his sophomore year. Monetary problems put Chris' family in a financial crunch; he had the option of attending Woodlawn High School or paying his own way through Episcopal. Chris chose to graduate from EHS. Chris gets home most school nights after 11 p.m., yet he still finds time to hit the books. His theory: I'm paying for it; I might as well study. From his job Chris learned what a lot of people are gonna learn when they get out of high school ... responsibility. Hopefully. It's what life's all about, said Chris. Chris' grades began to slip around January of this year, and his mom offered to help him out. Chris only works 25 hours a week now, and he still does odd jobs like cutting grass and cleaning his mom's office. To earn enough money for college, Chris plans to work next year as a Fast Track manager. He w-ould eventually like to become a veterinarian and will most likely attend LSU. Outside of work, Chris shows a love for animals. At one time he claims to have owned a zoo. He had the usual dogs and cats, but he also had a ferret, snakes, parakeets and turtles. Chris also shows a love for the outdoors; he enjoys hunting and fishing. Although, he admits, I haven't had much time to do those things. 83
